New Island, located at the border between the Johto and Kanto regions, stood a unique island. It housed the most advanced equipment, and countless zealous scientists gathered there with a single, shared goal:
To create.
They attempted to create an entirely new lifeform.
In fact, they succeeded. Using the cells of Mew, the ancestor of all Pokémon, along with those of other Pokémon, they created an entirely new Pokémon.
That Pokémon's name was Mewtwo.
While the scientists celebrated their success, the life they had created fell into confusion.
"Who am I? Where is this? Why was I brought into this world?"
Mewtwo didn't know where it came from or where it was supposed to go. No one could answer its questions.
Money, fame, desire...
These things were shamelessly laid bare in front of Mewtwo.
"What do you see me as?"
A girl's face flashed through his mind — a memory from deep within. The tears in her eyes starkly contrasted with the greedy, twisted expressions of the scientists, filling Mewtwo with deep disgust and hatred.
"What do you see us as?"
Humans always place themselves above all else. In their eyes, Mewtwo was merely a successful experiment, a puppet to be controlled at will.
But what they didn't anticipate… was that the power of the being they created had far surpassed their expectations.
In other words — they could no longer control him!
"I never asked anyone to give me life, nor did I beg anyone to create me."
Mewtwo slowly floated into the air, his eyes glowing with a deep blue light — the signature of a Psychic-type Pokémon.
Telekinesis.
But Mewtwo's psychic power was far too immense — just one glance caused the lab's instruments to explode.
Mechanical arms extended from the ceiling, trying to restrain Mewtwo. But this only enraged him further.
"Why was I born?!"
A single finger released a blast of energy that blew away all the mechanical arms and even the entire lab ceiling.
"I never asked you!"
Blue energy burst from Mewtwo's body. The surrounding machinery exploded, engulfing the entire laboratory in a sea of fire.
Only now did the scientists realize Mewtwo's terrifying power. It had gone far beyond what anyone had predicted — but by then, it was already too late.
The few surviving scientists tried desperately to flee, but were swallowed by the merciless flames. A series of violent explosions consumed the entire research facility.
"Why was I born?!"
Mewtwo roared to the sky in anger. No one could answer him.
Dr. Fuji, the mastermind behind the Mewtwo Project, sat collapsed on the floor, staring blankly at the figure floating in the sky.
'What have I done?'
This power — this wasn't something any ordinary Pokémon could do.
This wasn't a Pokémon.
It was a god.
They had created a god.
A god filled with only resentment and hatred!
In the next instant, blue light radiated outward from Mewtwo, devouring everything in its path and soaring into the sky.
The entire research base vanished into smoke and flame.
New Island was now a sea of fire.
Above the island, a helicopter hovered. Inside sat a middle-aged man in an orange suit. He looked ordinary enough — neatly combed hair slick with oil, a cat-like creature perched on his lap. But there was one thing that set him apart:
His eyes.
Those eyes burned with an overwhelming desire to dominate, staring intently downward.
'At last… the Pokémon of my dreams has appeared.'
"Descend."
The man said calmly.
"But, BOSS, it's extremely dangerous down there!"
The pilot, dressed in a black uniform, warned.
"Are you questioning me?"
The man's indifferent tone made the pilot shiver. No one was allowed to question his decisions. No one.
Amidst the destruction, Mewtwo stood alone, untouched by the surrounding inferno. The flames were blocked as if by an invisible wall, unable to reach within a meter of him.
"Hm?"
Sensing something, Mewtwo extended his left hand and waved it gently.
The fire before him extinguished completely.
Before him stood a human boy he had never seen before. Like Mewtwo, he kept the fire at bay — his method familiar. This human possessed psychic power too.
A psychic?
"Who are you? Human?"
Mewtwo stared at the boy in confusion. He didn't know when the boy appeared, nor how he remained unscathed amidst Mewtwo's psychic explosion.
It was the first time he'd seen such a thing — even though he had only been born a few minutes ago.
"In this world, you can call me Yamcha."
Yamcha, who had originally been on a cruise home, had sensed Mewtwo's energy and came to investigate.
For once, he didn't use an alias.
"Yamcha?" Mewtwo looked at him, intrigued, but his inner confusion remained.
"That's your name… then what is my name? Why did I come into this world? Who am I?"
Though his mouth never moved, the voice resounded — telepathy, a power only the strongest Pokémon possessed.
Who am I? Why was I created? Where do I go from here?
These ultimate philosophical questions have no set answer.
"You are no one else. You are simply yourself."
"Your name is Mewtwo."
"A convenient answer," Mewtwo's eyes narrowed as he focused on Yamcha, intrigued. "Then do you know why I came into this world? I never asked to be created."
"No living being seeks permission from its offspring before giving them life. In this regard, none of us has a choice."
"Offspring?" Mewtwo seized on the word, his aura flaring, emotions rising. "Are you saying I am humanity's offspring?"
Yamcha continued as if he hadn't heard.
"Logically speaking, yes — you are humanity's offspring."
"Do you know what a test-tube baby is?"
He suddenly asked. Mewtwo instinctively nodded. His mind contained much knowledge — all programmed into him during gestation.
"Not all men and women in this world can conceive naturally. In such cases, external assistance is needed."
"Sperm from a man, an egg from a woman — fertilized artificially outside the body."
"Though not common, it happens. Would you say a child born this way isn't human? That they weren't born of their parents?"
"In my eyes, they are no different from you."
