Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Midnight Killer Ring

First, the woman jolted up from the chair like a startled bird. Her eyes were fixed on the telephone in the room.

Since the videotape had no sound, Roy figured the phone must have rung, scaring the woman in the recording.

On screen, the woman covered her ears and huddled in the corner, clearly afraid to answer the phone.

Finally, the woman looked towards the TV with terror, her mouth widening and her body stiffening, as if she'd seen something horrifying.

Because of the camera angle, Roy couldn't see the TV, but he guessed it had turned on by itself.

The videotape wasn't finished yet. The last part showed Mason going into room five to check on things, only to find the woman dead with another videotape on the floor.

Panicked, Mason put the videotape on the VCR and then disposed of the body.

You could tell Mason was really shocked at the time. How could the person have died without him even touching them?

This also explains why Mason seemed a bit scared when Roy mentioned the phone.

It really is *The Ring*, and the American version at that!

Roy's expression turned a bit grim. He himself wasn't afraid, after all, he was the son of a demon now.

How many divisions could Sadako possibly have?

Would a mere evil spirit dare to mess with the son of a demon?

This was evident from the fact that nothing happened to Roy after he watched the tape and answered the phone, showing that Sadako was a bully who picks on the weak.

His only worry was that Sadako would only target Heather. Roy couldn't possibly stay by Heather's side all week!

Heather would have moments when she was alone, and that's when things would get troublesome.

"Roy, it sounds like someone's parking outside!"

Heather suddenly called out a warning from outside the door, and Roy quickly left the surveillance room.

"Heather, hide under the counter first!"

Heather was a bit confused, thinking Roy wanted to play some kind of special game at a time like this. She even thought about unzipping his jeans.

Luckily, Roy stopped Heather's hand before she could continue.

Just then, two burly police officers walked into the motel lobby, guns in hand.

One of the officers, with a menacing look on his face, stared at Roy and spoke.

"Are you the one who called the police?"

"Yes, the police sure got here fast today!"

"We were just patrolling nearby and rushed over after receiving the message from headquarters. Where's the motel owner you mentioned?"

"He's tied up in one of the rooms. I'll take you there now!"

As Roy prepared to come out from behind the counter, both police officers suddenly raised their guns and aimed at him.

Bang, bang, bang...

The two officers continuously pulled their triggers, unleashing a barrage of bullets at Roy. Luckily, he had been wary of the police and, noticing something was wrong, immediately ducked behind the counter.

"Ah—"

"Get down!"

Roy pushed Heather down to the ground. After a few seconds, the police ran out of bullets, and then Roy stood up and shot at the two officers.

The police officers were instantly shot in the head, dead as can be.

"Roy, what on earth happened? Why did the police attack us?"

Roy reloaded his gun and put it away.

"I'm guessing those two cops were in cahoots with the motel owner. They were here to silence us, not to investigate."

Heather's eyes widened, unable to imagine things could be so dark.

"How could this be? This is too terrifying!"

Roy helped Heather up.

"Is this your first day living in America? This country is like this."

Hearing this, Heather fell silent, probably thinking of some rumors she'd heard.

They couldn't stay in the motel any longer. Who knew what other people might show up? Even the ambulance might not be reliable.

A police car was parked outside. As they passed it, a voice suddenly came from the radio inside.

"Anderson, Brooke, is the situation resolved?"

A thought struck Roy. He opened the police car door, picked up the radio, and answered in a muffled voice.

"It's taken care of. We're on our way back."

"You're not Anderson or Brooke. Who is this?"

Roy hadn't expected the other person to recognize his voice so quickly.

"I'm the one who took you guys out!"

"Don't think you can get away with this. We will find you!"

Roy punched the car radio, smashing it and not giving the other person a chance to continue speaking.

"Roy, it sounds like they're part of some kind of organization?"

Roy nodded.

"We can't stay at this motel any longer. We have to leave immediately!"

He took Heather to room four, where Amy looked at them nervously.

"Roy, what was all that gunfire just now?"

The latest and fastest novels are all here!

"Two police officers just came, but they were working with the motel owner!"

Hearing this, Amy's face fell into despair.

"How could this happen?"

"Anyway, we can't stay at the motel. Let's get in the car and leave right now!"

Roy helped David up and headed towards his car.

Luckily, Roy's secondhand yellow Chevrolet Camaro hadn't been damaged by Mason. They probably figured the group couldn't escape, so they hadn't bothered doing anything extra.

Starting the car, Roy first drove to the gas station across from the motel, smashed the door, and grabbed several cans of gasoline before continuing on their way.

It was late at night, and there were no streetlights along the road. The snow was also getting heavier, making it impossible for the car to go fast.

David was getting weaker and weaker. The down feathers they had used to stop his bleeding were completely soaked in blood.

"David, hang in there! You absolutely cannot fall asleep right now!"

Amy shook David, tears streaming down her face.

"I'm sorry, Amy, but I feel like I can't hold on much longer."

"No! You're going to be okay! As long as you survive, we won't get divorced! Heather, how much further is it to the town?"

Heather glanced at the GPS.

"We're still about thirty-something kilometers from the nearest town."

Thirty-something kilometers would take Roy at least an hour at his current speed, and that was clearly too long.

"Roy, can't you drive any faster? Please!"

Roy really wanted to drive faster, but the road was covered in both snow and ice, making it very slippery and dangerous to speed up.

David, who also knew how to drive, understood Roy's predicament and took Amy's hand.

"Amy, don't make things harder for Roy. He's already helped us so much!"

"But, but..."

Amy could no longer control her emotions and hugged David, crying uncontrollably.

This scene of parting ways between life and death made Heather's eyes well up with tears as well.

Roy wasn't affected by what was happening in the back seat and remained focused on driving.

In such extreme weather conditions, even a slight lapse in concentration could lead to an accident.

Suddenly, Roy noticed a van approaching from the opposite direction, and then the van abruptly swerved and blocked the middle of the road.

Roy reacted very quickly, immediately turning the steering wheel to drift, but the side of his car still collided with the van that was blocking the road.

"Ah—"

Heather and Amy screamed simultaneously. Roy saw several fully armed soldiers getting out of the van.

"Get down!"
