Chapter 99 - CHAPTER 100

100: Xiaohao Is Attacked by Gyarados!!

"Gyarados!? How can there be a Gyarados in this river!?"

Professor Oak, seated on a folding stool at the riverbank while fishing with the students, sprang up in disbelief the moment he saw the massive serpentine figure Xiaohao had hauled out. His sharp eyes widened—this was no ordinary catch.

The Pokémon League regularly monitors and catalogs the wild Pokémon within the summer camp's valley area, and any Pokémon deemed too powerful or aggressive are either relocated or carefully tracked to prevent accidents. It was inconceivable for a fully evolved and notoriously violent Water/Flying-type like Gyarados to be swimming freely here.

"Unless… could it have evolved just recently?" Oak muttered, stroking his chin. "I haven't really paid close attention to Magikarp populations during routine checks. That might've been a mistake." His mind ran rapidly through data from previous surveys Magikarp were abundant but weak, typically dismissed in threat assessments. However, an unnoticed evolution could explain the anomaly.

Although Oak had a tendency to lose himself in thought, years of fieldwork had sharpened his instincts. He quickly returned his focus to the river and froze at what he saw next.

"Xiaochun, lend me Spritzee! I'm going to battle Gyarados!" Xiaohao's voice rang out, filled with urgency and excitement. His eyes gleamed not with fear, but ambition.

"Based on its size and weight, if I land this catch, I'll top today's fishing competition!" he declared, missing the immediate danger posed by the furious Pokémon before him.

Without hesitation, Xiaochun handed over her Spritzee, a gentle Fairy-type Pokémon assigned to her by the Kalos research team under Bratano's directive. Xiaohao wasted no time, tossing the Poké Ball. "Come out, Spritzee!!" he shouted, completely oblivious to the grave risk.

"Xiaohao, STOP!!" Professor Oak bellowed from the riverbank, panic rising in his voice.

But it was too late. Xiaohao ignored the warning, eyes fixed on the challenge ahead.

"Spritzee, use Fairy Wind!"

"Pii~!" Spritzee cried out. Though clearly intimidated by the sheer presence of the towering Gyarados, it summoned its courage. With wings fluttering, it unleashed a soft, pink whirlwind laced with glimmering fairy energy.

But the attack barely ruffled Gyarados' scales.

The massive Pokémon's expression twisted with fury.

"ROOOAAAR!!" Gyarados bellowed, its rage echoing across the valley like thunder.

Then it struck.

With one ferocious motion, Gyarados swung its colossal tail like a whip of solid steel—dredging up water as it turned. The gathered force morphed into a violent Aqua Tail, crashing toward the riverbank.

"No!" Oak shouted. His instincts kicked in. In a flash, he reached for a Poké Ball clipped to his belt and hurled it. "Come out.Dragonite!"

The ball burst open in a brilliant flash, revealing Oak's powerful Dragon-type companion. "Dragonite, save that child!" he cried out.

But even Dragonite's agility couldn't outpace what came next.

"BOOM!!" The Aqua Tail smashed into the riverbank. Spritzee and Xiaohao were launched violently into the air, flung backwards like ragdolls. A torrent of spray followed, and a glint of red mixed with the water's surface a sharp contrast to the clear river that ran moments ago.

"XIAOHAO!!" Xiaochun cried, sprinting forward in horror.

"Xiaohao…" Oak muttered, stunned, his heart dropping.

Spritzee's Poké Ball rolled to the side, still intact, but the small Pokémon lay motionless on the grass beside its trainer.

The other students stood frozen in shock. Gary, who had earlier scoffed at Xiaohao's impulsiveness, clenched his fists. His usual arrogant demeanor shifted to a look of grim concern. Despite their friction, even he hadn't wished for such a brutal outcome.

The scene was chaos one moment, Xiaohao had drawn the strongest Pokémon of the day; the next, he lay among scattered grass and splattered water, another victim of the wild's unpredictability.

And so, the summer camp's most dangerous incident yet would be remembered not for its competition, but for a lesson every Trainer must learn ambition must always walk hand-in-hand with respect for power.

Seeing the vivid red mixing into the shattered white spray, Gary's jaw dropped and his eyes widened in stunned disbelief. The water had turned faintly pink where the tail of Gyarados had struck, and for a few seconds, Gary could only stand there frozen, unable to process what had just happened.

Ash, by contrast, did not display visible shock. His face remained calm, but when his eyes caught sight of the Dragonite that Professor Oak had released, his pupils contracted in astonishment. The aura surrounding Dragonite was overwhelming its presence alone forced the nearby wild Pokémon to retreat deeper into the trees.

"Level 84… That's a champion-tier Dragonite!!" Ash muttered to himself in shock after using his Aura-guided scan ability through his inherited system to analyze the Dragonite. He had read about Professor Oak's Dragonite in Kanto records but had never expected to encounter it in battle-ready form let alone at summer camp.

This was the first time Ash had seen a fully trained pseudo-legendary Pokémon up close. That Dragonite's stats didn't just rival it surpassedmany Gym Leader-level Pokémon. And its hidden ability, Multiscale, meant it could shrug off even super-effective opening hits.

Coming back to his senses, Ash quickly channeled his Aura to warn the Gyarados. "Danger incoming. Get out now!" he transmitted via Aura communication.

"Roooaaar!" Gyarados snarled one last time, its wild instincts kicking in as it immediately recognized the overwhelming power of the approaching Dragonite. Without hesitation, it dove back into the river and vanished downstream in a violent surge of bubbles and foam.

Wild Pokémon, especially powerful evolved ones like Gyarados, often sensed lethal threats faster than humans. And nothing screamed danger like a Champion-level Dragonite under orders.

"Xiaohao…" Professor Oak sprinted to the riverside, urgency overtaking all other concerns. The fact that a Gyarados had attacked a student was now secondary to ensuring that Xiaohao was safe.

"Ash, did you see that just now...?" Gary finally recovered from his stupor, turning toward his friend.

Ash looked over with a faint smile and said, "Master Gary, it seems the curse you muttered earlier turned real." He didn't speak with malice just a trace of irony.

With that, Ash scooped up his Froakie, which was watching nervously from the grass. Without a word, he began walking toward the group gathering around Xiaohao and Oak.

"Wait up, Ash!" Gary called out, tossing his fishing rod aside and hurrying after him.

Around the site, the other students, previously immersed in the summer camp's fishing activity, abandoned their rods and made their way toward the scene. Whispered concern rippled through the group after all, Xiaohao had pulled in the most powerful Pokémon any of them had ever seen… and paid a high price for it.

"Ash," Gary said again, his voice uncertain as they slowed near the outer ring of students.

Ash stopped for a moment, then turned to face him. "Gary, do you think I should go over there and use my Aura healing to help Xiaohao?"

His tone was calm, but his eyes were serious. Gary hesitated, unsure how to answer as the crowd thickened. The question hung between them not just about powers, but about how far they should go for someone like Xiaohao, whose pride had often made him difficult to approach.
