Chapter 42 - Pond, Part 9

Max was the one in charge of most of the DNA samples collected during investigations. His main job was to work with Dexter on blood analysis, then with Masuka to finalize the missing details.

Dexter was the first to finish his analyses, so he walked to the investigation office under Larry's leadership with the documents about the recently submitted blood samples.

Dexter greeted everyone, glanced at the board with the patterns, but something caught his attention—there was a source behind the killer. "What is this?"

Ángel took the papers and explained in detail, "Don't tell anyone, but Larry believes this is a copycat killer being manipulated by another murderer. Although there's also the possibility that the killer is someone in this department—otherwise, how would they know the procedure used in the murder of those two prostitutes?"

"That's insane." Dexter felt uncomfortable for the first time being both a killer and an investigator.

Does Larry suspect there's a murderer in the Miami Police Department?

If a case like this made him suspicious of his colleagues, what's stopping Larry from suspecting him? That's why Dexter was cautious—he knew that with someone like Larry around, he couldn't afford a single mistake.

"The Ice Killer likes to freeze his victims after cutting them into pieces, though the method can vary. This killer who ended Ron used the same procedure as with the first prostitute but stopped just before dismembering the body." Larry approached as he flipped the board to show Dexter his private investigation.

"This is brilliant, very polished." Dexter was fascinated by Larry's investigation—he truly was a predator of murderers.

But just as Larry was about to ask Dexter more about his sister's case, a detective approached and said, "Excuse me, forensic tech, Luk, there's something that needs your attention."

"Skip the formalities. Tell me, what's going on?"

"I tried calling the deceased's father, but the man who answered said he wouldn't speak to anyone but you. Seems like he knows you," the detective said, a bit embarrassed for failing at something so simple.

"Let's go." Larry walked toward the detective's desk, leaving Dexter and Ángel behind as they continued discussing the case.

"Is it the father?"

"Yes, his name was confirmed—he's John Morrow."

Larry nodded without saying a word. He picked up the landline phone from the detectives' office, and as he brought it to his ear, a voice sounded: "Are you the one in charge of the investigation?"

"That's right. I'm the criminal profiler leading the case. I'm also a forensic pathologist. Just call me Larry. Could you confirm again that you are John Morrow, Ron Morrow's father?"

"Yes, I'm John."

Though the man's voice was restrained, it was clear he was in a bad mood. It seemed Tara had already notified him.

But his son was dead—murdered. The fact that he responded so calmly told Larry that John might know something. Either that, or he had an exceptionally strong mind, was completely indifferent, or was hiding something. Of course, that's what Larry hoped to uncover.

"My condolences… We've confirmed that Ron Morrow was murdered. We now need you and Ron's mother to provide relevant time evidence for the case. It doesn't matter if you don't have the time—this has to be done."

"That's not possible."

"Is your business more important?"

"I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you're implying, but I hope you understand that the nature of my work cannot be interrupted," John replied, reacting to Jason's provocation.

"Even so, you'll have to hand over everything related to your son and his home life. Do you think you can do that?" Larry stopped pretending to be empathetic; once he understood the kind of man John was, he preferred to speak plainly.

John seemed to think about it for a moment and said, "Fine, you'll have everything you need. I just ask one condition—that this murder be resolved discreetly."

"We're aware." Larry didn't need anything else from this man for now, but just then, John's voice came through again. "I'll send my lawyer to take care of all the formalities."

"You'll need to sign several documents."

"He'll bring them when he comes to the department and meets you in person."

"I don't deal with these trivialities." Larry clearly wasn't interested in talking to third parties about the cases he investigated.

When the call ended, Larry returned to his office in silence.

It seemed the father didn't want to get involved in the case and had entrusted everything to his lawyer, who would cooperate with the police in whatever they needed.

"Ángel, can you handle the lawyer?"

"Did they sue us?"

"I told you we shouldn't have hired those two-for-one deal prostitutes," Masuka blurted out, unaware of what Larry was actually referring to.

"Calm down, let me handle it." Ángel panicked, but as a man, he was ready to respond to any dissatisfaction it might cause.

Larry, on the other hand, remained silent. "It's not a lawsuit. Ron's father is sending his lawyer to take care of all the trivial matters related to his son's murder."

"Why would they go through all that trouble just to let an unrelated lawyer handle their son's murder case?" Masuka quickly changed the subject.

"Is his sister unreliable?"

"He didn't say anything else, but we have the search warrant to go to Ron's house. We need to get there before meeting with the lawyer."
