Chapter 937 - Chapter 936: Into the Abyss

The grand hall of the Dominion Keep felt quieter than usual, a palpable tension hanging in the air like a dark cloud. Kael walked slowly across the polished marble floor, the sound of his footsteps echoing off the high walls. The torches that lined the hall flickered with an otherworldly light, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch and shift unnaturally, like whispers of something darker that still lingered.

His empire was fractured. The rebellion led by Lucian had reached a tipping point, spreading like wildfire through the ranks. Every moment of indecision, every hour spent in contemplation, weighed heavier on him than the wars he had fought. In his past, he had controlled the narrative, manipulating situations and people as if they were mere pieces on a board. But now, the rules were changing. Even Kael, with all his cunning and power, could not see the full picture.

The throne room was empty except for his closest allies. General Marcus stood at attention near the far side, his stoic expression betraying none of the concerns that were surely bubbling beneath the surface. Behind him, the intricate tapestries of the Dominion Keep, depicting the great battles won in the early days of Kael's rise, swayed slightly in the draft. Each thread seemed to carry with it the weight of history, a reminder of the victories that had carved Kael's path to power.

"You're late," Kael said, his voice cool as he made his way toward the throne. The words were directed at no one in particular, but they cut through the tension in the room like a blade.

Marcus didn't flinch, though Kael knew it was a careful restraint. The general had learned long ago that Kael's moods could shift in an instant, and his silence was always a calculated move.

"My lord," Marcus finally spoke, his voice as calm and measured as ever. "The preparations for the counteroffensive are nearly complete. Our forces stand ready. However, I must caution you... the rebellion's spread is more insidious than we anticipated."

Kael's gaze sharpened, his eyes narrowing into thin slits. "I'm aware. Lucian is moving faster than we can contain. But this is not a matter of simply quelling a few uprisings. This is a cancer that has spread through our very ranks. We need to root out the source. Only then can we secure our position."

Marcus stepped forward, unfurling a detailed map of the empire on a long table in the center of the room. Lines and marks traced the movements of both Lucian's forces and their allies, showing the areas of greatest rebellion activity.

"Lucian's influence is strongest in the south, around the Ironclad Fortress and the eastern plains. We've received reports of several powerful lords siding with him, not to mention the sorcerers who have lent their support," Marcus continued, his finger tracing the map with precision. "The nobility is fractured, my lord. But Lucian's alliance with the sorcerers—if we fail to counter it—could be the true downfall of this empire."

Kael's gaze remained fixed on the map, though his mind was elsewhere, in a place far darker. Sorcery. It was a power he had never fully trusted, but one he had often manipulated to his advantage. Now, it was something he might have to face head-on—an uncomfortable thought, but not an impossible one. His connection to the Abyss, to the arcane energies that pulsed beneath the world, was strong, but it wasn't limitless.

"We will deal with the sorcerers," Kael said, his voice cold with determination. "But Lucian… He has become more than a mere pawn. His rebellion is a statement. He seeks to challenge not just my rule, but the very foundation upon which this empire stands."

The flames in the torches flickered, casting fleeting shadows across Kael's face as he stood at the heart of the room. His mind churned with strategy, his intellect dissecting every piece of the puzzle. But deep within him, there was a gnawing feeling, one he could not quite place. His enemies were close. Closer than ever before. But it was not just the rebellion that disturbed him.

It was the Sleeper.

An ancient force, a being from beyond the realms of the mortal and divine, whose presence had begun to stir beneath the surface. The Sleeper, whose influence Kael had long known would come to bear at some point. The only question was when—and how. The thought of it made his skin crawl, but Kael knew that to survive, to ensure the empire would remain his, he would have to confront this threat, no matter the cost.

"There is another matter," Kael said after a moment, his voice low but carrying an undeniable weight. "The Sleeper's awakening is imminent."

Marcus's brow furrowed. "The Sleeper? Are you certain?"

"I've felt its stirrings, Marcus," Kael replied, his gaze turning inward, as if listening to something just beyond the reach of mortal senses. "The rebellion is but a distraction. The true test is what comes next."

Marcus remained silent for a long moment, clearly processing Kael's words. His loyalty to the lord of the Dominion was unquestioned, but even he could not deny the overwhelming power that the Sleeper represented. It was a force that defied logic, and one that even Kael, as mighty as he was, could not fully comprehend.

"What are your orders, my lord?" Marcus finally asked, his voice still steady, though a trace of concern leaked through.

Kael's lips curled into a thin, calculating smile. "We will root out the rebellion, of course. But we must also be ready for what comes next. The Sleeper is not something we can face with mere armies. We must prepare ourselves in ways the rebellion will never expect. We will forge alliances, gather ancient powers, and find the key to confronting this dark force once and for all."

Marcus's expression softened with understanding. He had known Kael long enough to recognize the weight of his words. The coming battle would be unlike any other, and its outcome could shift the balance of power in ways no one could predict.

"Understood, my lord," Marcus said, bowing slightly. "I will ensure the preparations are made."

As Marcus turned to leave, Kael remained standing before the map, the weight of the world pressing heavily on his shoulders. He was a man who had always thrived in chaos, a master manipulator who had crafted his empire from the ashes of those who had dared to stand in his way. But now, the true test awaited. The Sleeper, an entity of darkness and unfathomable power, would soon emerge, and Kael had to ensure that he was ready to face it, no matter the cost.
