Chapter 9 - Into the storm

Tasha frowned at the mention of Chris' intention to confront Valerie about the safe. He believed that perhaps she could have noticed any sort of suspicious activities in the mansion while they were away. He felt unsettled at the thought that leaving Valerie alone and unguarded in the lone mansion may have made her vulnerable to a grave amount of danger and the possibility of what could have happened made a chill flow down his spine.

"How more stupid can you get? What exactly is the point in asking the obvious? Isn't it too obvious Valerie is the one who took the money from you, who else was here besides her?", Tasha fumed.

Chris sighed and wiped off the sweat that had accumulated on his forehead. "All l am saying is we can't be sure, if she had taken the money, she probably would be long gone by now", he said hesitantly. "Besides she doesn't even know the safe password", Chris said hesitantly. "I have way too much enemies, they could have done it".

"Valerie is not a typical housekeeper. l have always told you that, but no...the great Chris Malvins never listens to anyone other than himself. ", Tasha warned.

"Yes and its only because she had a formal job before and she lost it, now she hadn't gotten another job and she took my offer just to get her feet back on the ground", Chris said.

Tasha's eyes turned icy. "If that is the story she told you and you bought it, then you are more stupid than l thought. She is somebody else".

Chris' confusion deepened. "Someone else like who? What are you insinuating? That Valerie is some sort of secret ninja?", Chris thundered. Tension was building up in the room.

"A spy! A spy,Chris.Valerie isn't as innocent as she seems to be", Tasha said.

"Okay, that's ridiculous. I am even surprised you haven't accused her of stealing your sanity yet. I know she can be mean but a spy, no!", Chris said, confusion all over his face.

A few moments passed as Chris paced up and down his bedroom. "You are just not going to spare her after this. No way!", Tasha said as she sat on the bed. "And darling I just never told you this before because l didn't want to worry you, but Gary has seen her on different occasions.", Tasha said.

Chris paused for a moment, trying to think. "Now who the hell is Gary?", Chris asked, creasing his face, not hiding his irritation.

"Gary is one of the best Private Investigators in town", she responded.

"What? You hired a Private Investigator to stalk Valerie?", he asked.

"And you don't want to hear who he saw with Mr Thompson", Tasha claimed.

"Mr Thompson?", Chris asked, stunned, his heartbeat increasing. "No way, why would she be meeting Mr Thompson. And besides her private life is none of my business, Mr Thompson and l are enemies but so what if they are related or something… it doesn't mean anything", Chris replied, in clear denial.

"I know you trust too much but you need to believe me. She is spying on you. I thought you don't like her", Tasha said.

"I don't like her. I mean at first…but_", he denied. "But l just think this is beyond her capability. I know she could be a lot of things but a robber? A spy? I don't think so", he said firmly.

"So you don't trust me? All l am trying to do is look out for you. You are in denial and that kind of girl is capable of anything. Anything!", she spoke confidently.

Chris sighed. "Something is just not adding up".

"If you believe she is innocent, it's fine my love. I just don't want you trying too much to be everything for everyone too. But if she really is what l think she is, for your own safety, don't spare her, if you truly love me Chris, for the both of us…just get rid of her", Tasha pleaded.

Chris hated her 'if you' tricks, he hated her manipulative ways. "Tasha, your 'if you love me' tradition is getting old, and what do you mean by 'get rid of her'?", Chris asked. "If she stole the money and she is a spy,l will deal with her my own way. I don't have to promise you to get rid of someone, you're getting out of line", he said roughly.

"No, its Valerie who is out of line, way out of line. Are you in love with her?", Tasha asked.

Chris chuckled. "Are you kidding me, Tasha? In love with Valerie, are you seriously asking me that? Come on, now you're being ridiculous!", he said, showing he had been extremely annoyed.

"Then if you do not care about Valerie, why are you so desperate to protect her when she is obviously guilty. She played dirty, so l might as well get in the mud".

"But you don't know that for sure", Chris defended.

"There is only one way to find out. We go downstairs and search her room. And if she is guilty, you leave that to me l will do the honours of getting her out of our lives. For good!", Tasha said.

"Now that's lame and clearly a waste of time, you think even if she stole the money she would keep it in her room? I doubt she is that stupid", Chris said.

"Let's just go, just to be sure", Tasha said as she grabbed his hand and they went downstairs.
