"Already afternoon, huh…"
Shen He stirred awake, fingers rubbing across his temple, still dazed from sleep.
In the Marvel World, he usually resumed training the moment he returned. But after last night's intense interdimensional battle, even he needed a break. Some mental breathing room was overdue.
"Let's go, Jeanne. Time to replenish ourselves."
He flipped out of bed and brought Jeanne d'Arc along to the dining area.
Outside, the virtual reality company's construction continued relentlessly. Factory zones and scientific laboratories were rising simultaneously—organized into clearly demarcated inner and outer sectors.
The most superficial layer remained the public-facing Virtual Reality (VR) Company. Ever since the Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. incidents, the VR company had cemented itself as a rising juggernaut. With its exposure during national crises, VR technology became a mainstream global topic overnight. While current products were limited to military prototypes, that alone was enough to herald the dawn of the "Immersive Age."
According to Tony Stark, the initial product line would undergo several closed beta expos for civilian testers—creating hype cycles before the official product launch. The monetization funnel was already in motion.
Technically, listing a company required detailed financial disclosures. But Shen He knew such protocols were mere illusions here. The Chaldean-aligned VR infrastructure had already quietly implemented ghost funding streams. Virtual sub-corporations, shell entities, and manipulated funding trails made the company bottomless in research potential.
And exaggerating R&D budgets? That was just Tony's style.
After all, a standard Iron Man armor reportedly cost over a billion USD in development—an estimate laughably inflated. Tony's genius circumvented most real expenses.
"Jarvis, let Tony know—Violet's armor doesn't have to be delivered so urgently."
Halfway through his meal, Shen He finally remembered to give that instruction.
The original plan had been to break through a multidimensional siege within the next 48 hours and rescue the final fragment. But since last night's emergency skirmish ended earlier than expected, the timeline had shifted.
A call came in moments later.
"You're telling me this now?" Tony's voice was a mix of sarcasm and exhaustion. "I pulled a 48-hour, caffeine-fueled rush job. You couldn't have told me earlier?"
"I couldn't help it," Shen He replied with a sigh. "Things accelerated in the alternate timeline. It's done now, so we've got a little breathing room."
Tony paused. "Well, in that case—there's something else."
Of course, he hadn't just called to vent. "There's a VIP seeking treatment at Dr. Helen Cho's medical research division. Wealthy. Terminal illness. Jarvis flagged him as Norman Osborn, CEO of Oscorp."
"Norman Osborn?" Shen He blinked.
"Yeah, that guy," Tony confirmed. "Oscorp isn't on the same tier as Stark Industries, but they've made a name in biotech, pharmaceuticals, and mutagenic research. If our facility cures Norman, it'll massively boost Helen's research credibility. More than that—it gives us leverage. I'm thinking of buying into Oscorp or maybe acquiring it outright. Saves us from building a second biotech line from scratch."
Shen He didn't normally involve himself in Tony's corporate maneuvering. But this wasn't just business. If Osborn was someone connected to Chaldea's observed multiverse outcomes, that changed things.
"Got it. I'll handle the contact. I'll let you know how I want to proceed."
Call ended, Shen He leaned back, thoughtful.
Back when he arrived in this world, he'd conducted a rapid mental sweep of significant names—Osborn among them. The infamous Green Goblin was listed as gravely ill, no signs of recent activity. But Oscorp still held sway. Kurt Connors—a former military biologist now one-armed geneticist—was still on staff. And Spider-Man... Peter Parker's father was previously one of Oscorp's researchers.
The puzzle began forming.
It looked like this Marvel World was a blend: The Amazing Spider-Man's biogene-heavy setting with the more modern Avengers-based Spider-Man timeline. Surprisingly, they meshed well. The canonical Spider-Man only surfaced post-Battle of New York. And by Civil War, he'd been active for about six months.
Those six months? They likely comprised the Amazing Spider-Man's two-movie arc.
That also implied Norman Osborn was still slated to die of illness—precluding his transformation into the Green Goblin in this timeline.
"Jarvis, reach out to Oscorp," Shen He instructed, biting into his stir-fried beef. "Make the contact as Chairman of the VR company."
Osborn's response came faster than expected.
Within ten minutes of the email being dispatched, a reply landed. Norman Osborn wanted to personally tour the VR Company's medical research facility—as soon as possible.
"Really does sound terminal."
By then it was five in the afternoon. If Osborn was that anxious, Shen He saw no need to delay. He instructed Dr. Helen Cho to prepare for a 7 PM visit.
Only—Norman arrived at 6:00.
In a wheelchair.
"Thank you for accommodating us on such short notice," Osborn's assistant greeted Shen He respectfully.
VR Corp's meteoric rise had already become the talk of international elites. Shen He, meanwhile, remained a mystery in their eyes—powerful, untouchable, and deeply tied to Chaldea's unseen layers.
Shen He nodded slightly and turned his gaze toward the frail man in the wheelchair.
Norman Osborn wasn't old—maybe in his late forties—but he looked twice that. Pale skin. Sunken cheeks. Wisps of gray in a once-full head of hair. Hands trembling uncontrollably.
"A pleasure," Norman's voice rasped. "They didn't mention you were so young. Shall we?"
Shen He said nothing more and led them inside, Jeanne d'Arc—today in secretary attire—walking beside him.
"Though I hold majority shares in VR Corp, I rarely meddle in operations," Shen He explained evenly. "However, Dr. Helen Cho was a Chaldean discovery. I trust her. Anyone who does the same earns some of my attention. That man there—Dr. Kurt Connors?"
"Yes, I am," replied the one-armed scientist in a lab coat, stepping forward.
Shen He had noticed him from the start.
Dr. Lizard. The man who experimented with cross-species DNA in hopes of regenerating his arm. Ambitious, but still primitive by Chaldean standards. After all, prosthetics like the Winter Soldier's cybernetic arm had existed for decades.
"I've reviewed your work," Shen He offered a faint smile—the first of the evening. "Cross-species genetic grafting is groundbreaking. But limiting it to limb regeneration? That's shortsighted. Done right, this tech could integrate animal and plant enhancements into human physiology."
It was the first honest praise Connors had heard in years.
The night was still young. But this chapter—the intertwining of Oscorp and Chaldea—had just begun.
