Chapter 86 - Shit Goes Sideways

Daily Meme

 -----

Hi!

Good news — this is the final chapter of the Two Heroes movie arc! After this, we are jumping back into the regular chapters, and a fanfavorite character is making entrance. No spoilers, but I bet a few of you can guess, haha!

That said, I noticed comments have dropped a lot lately. Maybe I am just being paranoid, but if it is because of the movie arc or anything else, let me know. I love hearing your thoughts... whether they are hype, critique, or just chaos.

I hate posting into the void, so hit me with your takes!!!!

--

Two nights later-

I-Island Convention Center-

The I-Expo Gala was everything I expected it to be, too shiny, too loud, and full of people who smelled like old money and designer cologne.

Momo looked stunning in her gala dress, which I totally didn't stare at for too long. Everyone else was dolled up too... Mina in something pink and borderline blinding, Jiro in a sleek all-black number that probably doubled as a weapon, Todoroki looking like a confused anime prince, and Kaminari wearing a bowtie he found in a vending machine.

Even I cleaned up. A little. They gave me a formal suit. I refused. Then Momo insisted. So I wore it. But I didn't button the top and I stole Bakugo's cufflinks.

We just finished pretending to mingle when the lights dimmed and a man took the stage with a girl.

David Shield-flanked by his daughter, Melissa, lead engineer.

Hero tech legends. Izuku's eyes were already misting over. Momo was laser-focused. Hatsume was vibrating. I was chewing a crab puff.

"Tonight," David said, "we present a breakthrough in Quirk science. Amplification."

The crowd leaned in.

--

We were just starting to relax. Dangerous mistake.

Then everything went to hell.

The lights flickered.

Emergency lockdown sirens screamed.

A voice echoed through the hall, "Security breach detected. Activating full containment protocol."

Massive blast doors slammed shut.

Pro Heroes in attendance-All Might included-lunged forward. Too late. Energy barriers locked around them like cages.

The crowd panicked. Screams echoed. Staff ran. Interns dove under tables.

I looked at the crab puff one last time. Tossed it onto a tray.

Then cracked my knuckles.

"Game on."

"Alright," I muttered. "Time to improvise."

Sparks danced from the ceiling as emergency lights flickered back to life.

"Alright, everyone-split up!" I barked. "We don't have time to play tourist."

I pointed as I gave out the strike groups...

"Group A! Rescue and crowd control-Todoroki, Tsuyu, Uraraka, Shoji, Aoyama. Get civilians out, use Todoroki's ice if you have to create walls or ramps. Uraraka, float debris if shit blocks the path. Mina, melt locks or barriers. Tsuyu, scouting and recon. Aoyama-"

"I shall sparkle dramatically to calm the masses!"

"Sure, do that. Distract and guide. Go!"

They scattered instantly, Todoroki already freezing a crumbling pillar as Uraraka floated a screaming kid out from under it.

"Group B! Tech protection team. That means our project and other dangerous ones hostiles might target. Momo, Jiro, Hatsume, Mineta. You protect the prototype like it's your own baby. I don't care if fire rains from the ceiling, that ring does not leave your hands. Hatsume, can you keep the power cells stabilized?"

"They're gonna explode if anyone sneezes at 'em."

"So don't let anyone sneeze."

"Got it."

Jiro smirked. "No different than usual."

"Momo, you run that team. Prioritize evac with the tech, but if someone threatens it-"

"I neutralize."

"That's my girl."

Her eyes flicked to me but she nodded.

"You got it, boss!" Hatsume chimed in with a grin. "She is my baby!"

I turned to her, "Call me something else."

She blinked. "What?"

I shrugged. "Anything else you can think of. 'Boss' makes me feel like I need a clipboard and a receding hairline."

She tilted her head, amused. "So what, you want something cooler? Like Commander?"

I shrugged. "I mean, I am hot."

A pause.

Then she actually barked a laugh-sharp and delighted. "Hah! You're a piece of work."

"Am I wrong?"

"Oh, you're definitely a fire hazard," she said, eyeing the stabilizer core like it was foreplay. Then she grinned, twirling her screwdriver. "Alright. I'll play. Hotshot it is. Let's see if you can keep it up."

"I always do."

"Good. Try not to blow anything up before I do."

Momo, deadpan behind her clipboard, muttered, "I regret everything."

I winked at her. "No you don't."

"Group C! You're the blunt instruments. Find the override terminal. Shut this lockdown down from the source. Bakugo, Kaminari, Kirishima, Sato, Ojiro. Use the freight lift. Bakugo, blast it open. Kaminari, reroute power. Ojiro, support with terrain reads. Sato, you're on brute force. Kirishima, tank whatever bites."

Bakugo cracked his neck. "About damn time."

"And Group D!" I snapped, turning just as Shoji and Hagakure emerged from the smoke.

"Stealth recon. Mina, Sero, Toru, Iida, Uraraka-"

"Uraraka's in Group A."

"Fuck, right-okay, just four of you then. Get behind the lockdown zones. Find us an uplink, cameras, vents, whatever. We need eyes on the whole facility. Shoji, coordinate. Jiro, pick up radio frequencies. Hagakure, I want you invisible and annoying. Make life hell for anyone who's not us."

She giggled. "On it."

Everyone moved. No hesitation. That was the good thing about Class 1-A-we broke rules, wrecked halls, and probably made our insurance guy cry, but when shit hit the fan, we moved like a damn strike force.

Good. Time to make this worse.

I followed them to make sure everything was on track. People were escaping all around while security drones zipped overhead, desperately trying to identify villains from the crowd. Good luck with that. Half the bastards probably walked in with a guest pass and a fake smile.

Izuku, of course, made a B-line toward David Shield and his daughter like he was about to propose. That simp loser. Kid could smell an All Might connection from a hundred yards and chase it like a bloodhound on caffeine. I watched him fumble out his name while Melissa tried to calm her father down, both of them cornered near the main exhibit hall.

"Mr. Shield!" Izuku yelled, dodging a falling light fixture. "I need to know if the override is manual or encrypted! If it's the central system, we can bypass through-"

"Encrypted!" Shield leaned toward Izuku, whispered. "East tower. Biometric lock."

Izuku turned pale. I heard enough. "Full biometric lock! And the emergency override's in the admin wing-east tower!"

I was halfway through chewing out a malfunctioning security bot when the location update dropped from Shield's lips like a gift-wrapped middle finger. Of course it was. Always the goddamn east tower. The furthest hellhole on this glorified tech island. The most locked-down, over-monitored, structurally sound pain-in-my-ass wing on this whole glorified tech island.

I looked at the rest of the crowd. Screaming civilians. Half-fried light fixtures. Bakugo barking something about "shitty layouts" while Kirishima tried to open a security panel with sheer optimism. And Momo was still locked in focus, standing over our invention like a general guarding state secrets.

I stepped back, into the shadows. They had this covered.

--

Todoroki's hand slammed against the wall, ice crawling up and sealing a crack just as a woman limped past, bleeding and wide-eyed. "This corridor is sealed. Go west-Tentacole will guide you."

"Got it," Shoji called, multiple arms extending, one of them already carrying two injured researchers across a zero-gravity ramp that Uraraka floated into place.

Tsuyu launched off the support beam, rebounding off the ceiling with a frog-kick that knocked a ricocheting plasma disc out of the air. She landed with a grunt next to the villain firing it, some asshole in a neon jumpsuit with tech gloves. He turned. "Who the hell are y-"

She punched him square in the jaw. "You are about to croak!"

The gloves clattered to the ground as Shoji wrapped him up mid-air in duct tape.

"You had that this whole time?" Tsuyu blinked.

Shoji shrugged. "I came prepared."

Todoroki launched an ice ramp through the ceiling. The last of the civilians were out.

Group A- Clear.

--

One villain down. The second had just jammed a hacking chip into the nearby panel, a shrill screech pulsing through the room as soundwaves flooded the system.

Jiro flinched, her earjack twitching. "He's using sonar disruptors. He's inside the panel. Trying to fry the core-!"

Momo was already moving. The housing module cracked open, the shield forming in her hands mid-stride, tossed overhand to Jiro. The jammer drone flew next, propellers humming as it emitted a counter-frequency burst.

The villain's eyes widened. "How did-?"

Jiro didn't let him finish. Her earjack stabbed the ground. The sound feedback knocked him across the room.

Iida burst back in, breathing hard. "One unconscious in the hallway. Are we secure?"

Jiro wiped her forehead. "System's stable. For now."

Momo gave a small smile. "Good work."

--

The terminal room was a fortress. Steel pillars. Laser barriers. A villain woman with a curved blade glowing red-hot and a floating drone whirring beside her.

Kirishima tanked the first swipe, teeth gritted, arms up. "Harder than that!"

The blade skidded off his arm, sparks flying. Bakugo dropped from above, a cluster bomb of explosions aimed at the drone. It juked left-then caught Sato's punch full in the sensor array.

Kaminari dove for the terminal, hands already crackling with electricity.

"CAN'T... HACK... THIS MUCH..." he growled.

"DO IT ANYWAY!" Bakugo yelled.

The panel burst open.

Kaminari screamed.

The terminal screamed back.

And then it opened.

Override subroutine initiated.

Bakugo smirked. "We done here?"

Kaminari twitched. "Haha... my teeth feel like jazz."

--

Hagakure was whispering into the comms. "Relay two's down. Sero, plant on the third node."

"Copy that," Sero whispered, flipping over a railing, landing on a catwalk. The tape on his belt glowed, unspooling as he swung around the data tower.

"Explosives set," he said.

Behind him, Mina sprinted past, skidding under a blast of oil from a greasy villain in a lab coat. She dropped low, melted a support beam, and watched the catwalk collapse right on top of him.

"Bet you slip on that one, greasy!" she cackled.

Sero groaned. "Mission accomplished... mostly... I think I sprained my everything."

Having confirmed the lockdown override was elsewhere, I slipped away from the others and ducked into the maintenance shaft. Alarms blared above. While the others moved like a strike team, I was making my own path to hell. Saw the devil.

He stood tall, armored to the teeth in cybernetic plating, like he had robbed a scrapyard and walked into a mech suit. Metallic claws glinted under the flickering light, and some fusion of tech and muscle bulged under his coat. His body looked like it had rage issues.

I slowed my steps, cracked my neck, and scanned him.

[ANALYZE]

[Target: Wolfram

Quirk: Magnetism (Augmented) – Controls metal with increased range and intensity through implanted enhancements.

Muscle Augmentation - Allows him to increase his muscle mass, greatly increasing his physical strength.

Stats:

STR: 89

AGI: 75

CHA: 45

LUK: 45

Traits:

Iron Man Cosplay: Tried to become Magneto, ended up as low-budget Iron Man.

Walking Scrapheap: Every part of him screams "malfunction risk."

Second-Hand Upgrades: Probably installed by a guy named Larry behind a dumpster.

Definitely Overcompensating: Bigger armor = smaller dick.

Not Great With Rejection: Might monologue. Brace for cringe.

Thinks He is Him: Cute. He thinks he controls the shitshow, not knowing he is just a puppet. Used by two different people.]

I rolled my eyes. "Great. Another monologue guy." Then I cursed. Two Quirks meant that that crusty asshole.

The lab lights flickered. Dust curled in the air. Wolfram sneered, scar twitching like it thought it gave him gravitas. "You kids don't understand power. You play hero in safe zones. The real world's built by those who bleed for it."

I pointed at his armor. "You look like a blender fucked a vending machine."

That got him snarling. Metal cords snapped taut along his arms. His gauntlets hissed and reconfigured, red-white energy fields buzzing like angry bees.

"You wasted this island's tech," he growled. "I improved it. My body-"

"Is crying for a firmware update."

His gauntlets flared again, white heat hissed through the vents. Then he lunged.

I was already moving, thumbing the latch on the prototype at my hip.

Click.

The Dynamic Flux Engine unfolded, sliding into place like it belonged to a war god. Three interlocked rings pulsed over my forearm. Momo called it "Dynamic Flux Engine." I called it the "Oh Shit Button."

[NEW OBJECTIVE: Try Not to Die (Again). Bonus if you look good doing it.]

[PRIDE STATUS: Abused, but still operational.]

Wolfram tore chunks from the ceiling, flinging them at me like angry office furniture.

Even his opening moves felt scripted. Like he was testing my range, not wasting strength.

I raised my arm-one of Hatsume's mods flared to life. Magnetic inversion burst out in a shock-cone, shredding the debris mid-air.

"Test complete," I muttered. "Conclusion- Still awesome."

He roared and charged.

His arms split open-metal claws, piston-driven hammer fists, mini-turrets. Guy was a walking tech tantrum. I ducked under a punch, slammed my palm into the core unit, and triggered a pulse blast. Point-blank.

Didn't break the armor.

But it made him stagger like a drunk fridge.

[ENERGY FLOW: 70% HOLD | SUIT SCAN: External Tech Detected | Neural Link?]

"...You're not the inventor," I called as I attacked again. "You're the test dummy, dummy."

His jaw twitched.

"Someone upgraded your sorry ass to look like this," I said. "Should've asked for a refund."

I grabbed the backup rod, flicked it open, and jammed it into the floor. My hand itched for the bat strapped behind me though not yet. I needed to see how this rustbucket moved first. Polarity spike. His left arm yanked downward, pinned by his own enhancements.

"You built your tech like a jackass," I said. "It's all offense, no grounding."

Then I blasted his back again.

He stumbled. I lunged—swept his leg, jammed the staff into his chest, and cranked the charge to 75%.

"Hey, fucktard."

He blinked up, dazed.

I hit the trigger.

BOOM.

He pinballed through a support wall, hit the next corridor, and didn't get up right away.

Sparks flew. Smoke choked the air. My ears rang. I too was thrown back.

System pinged like it just spilled tea.

I limped in.

Of course, the bastard stood.

Barely damaged.

Sparks danced across his frame, metal plates twitching like they couldn't decide whether to reboot or explode.

"You think this is over?" he roared. "This island's just the beginning-"

I groaned. "Can you not?"

He lunged. No wind-up. Just raw, berserk rage.

I barely rolled, ribs screaming. My leg dragged half a second too long-

[Pain Threshold: Surpassed]

His clawed arm carved a groove through the floor beside me. I Quickstepped sideways and felt the heat of his other fist grazing my ribs.

[Shatterpoint Active – Weak points detected]

Suit pulse glitch. Red flicker under left shoulder. Neural lag at base spine.

"Left armpit… spine relay… that leg's cracked. Gotcha."

I dropped the weapon.

Time to bring out the favorite.

I twisted my hip and pulled it free from the loop behind me.

The Bat.

Not just any bat. My bat.

Wrapped in reinforced sheer belief. Weighted will. Custom love. Engraved with faint lettering:

"BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF BULLSHIT."

Wolfram paused. Looking if I really dropped the explosive weapon and brought out a normal bat.

"You're bringing a bat," he muttered.

I rolled my shoulder. "No. I'm bringing religion. And you are losing it. GO REM!"

He roared, launched a flurry of metallic tendrils at me. I kicked off the wall and twisted mid-air.

[SPRINT MASTERY: ACTIVE]

[ENDLESS MOMENTUM: ACTIVE]

System stacked buffs like a casino jackpot, momentum, reflex, rebound, all lighting up at once.

I slammed the bat into the first tendril, redirected it into the second.

[PINPOINT REBOUND STRIKE: TRIGGERED]

They collapsed into each other like drunk spaghetti.

He turned, firing a burst of magnetic shock from his chestplate. I raised the bat just in time-

[MOMENTUM SHIFT: ACTIVE] – +12% Strength Buff

The impact shoved me back, but not down. I growled, charging forward.

He braced-

-bad move.

[STORM FIST – WIND VARIANT: CHARGED]

I spun the bat. Slammed it into the floor. Wind burst out from the strike, creating a vacuum around his footing.

He stumbled.

I was already inside his guard.

Crack. Bat to ribs. He grunted.

Crack. Bat to hip. He buckled.

I twisted behind and went low, sweeping his leg.

"Remember what I said about the vending machine?"

BAM! I uppercutted the bat into his chin.

"Still ugly."

He stumbled, blinking static.

Then snapped.

His suit whirred like it rebooted mid-fight. Reinforcements slammed over his limbs. Nanofiber coils glowed red-hot.

[WARNING: WOLFRAM - OVERRIDE MODE: ACTIVE]

"Okay," I muttered. "Now he's pissed."

His next punch shattered the tile behind me as I narrowly dodged. I vaulted a table, slid under a pipe, and tossed the bat up mid-dash-

Caught it mid-air on the rebound. Spun it backwards.

He followed like a raging bull.

[GAMBLER'S GRIT: ACTIVE - HP BELOW 40%] - CRITICAL HIT RATE BOOSTED

I feinted left.

He overcommitted.

[SHATTERPOINT WINDOW - FINAL USE]

I saw it: a back vent panel twitching under strain.

I flipped the bat in my grip and spiked it into that spot.

CLANG.

His systems sparked wildly. He screamed. Not in pain though... in fury.

I dodged, barely. He clipped my side anyway. Fucker moved faster than his stats promised.

[DIRTY FIGHTING: ACTIVE]

I headbutted him.

Yes. Headbutted a cyborg.

Why?

Because I'm me.

CRACK.

His nose shattered. Not metal. Flesh. That bit was still human.

"Found the soft spot."

He shoved me back and charged a final pulse.

The suit glowed... white-hot magnetic surge.

[WARNING: Signature Quirk Build-Up Detected - Range Burst Imminent]

I pulled the core unit off my belt. Clicked the override button.

It flared.

Momo's blueprint.

Hatsume's upgrades.

My chaos.

I threw it forward like a grenade-

It latched to his chest.

"Bye, Bitch."

KA-THRUMM.

The pulsewave detonated inward-imploding his system.

He didn't explode.

He folded.

Screamed.

Cracked.

Collapsed.

Smoke rose. Alarms still echoed faintly.

I stumbled forward. Leaned over him.

He twitched, barely breathing.

"I told you. You're not a villain," I whispered. "You're a rejected blueprint with a gun."

Then I raised the bat-

-and dropped it on his forehead.

Not a swing. Just a bonk.

"Monologue over."

He passed out.

System pinged like it was clapping with one hand.

All Might burst in ten seconds later with pros.

Late.

Again.

He surveyed the wreckage-smoking hallway, destroyed panels, fried cyborg.

"Oh," he said, blinking. "It's… already over?"

I gestured vaguely at the crater. "You can still take a selfie with the downed bastard if you want."

Behind him, Momo appeared flanked by two security officers. She took one look, gasped, and ran straight to me.

"Are you hurt?"

"Just bruised. He punched like a microwave in a tracksuit."

A technician ran past screaming something about restoring power. Another fumbled with the control console. The lockdown lifted. Doors opened. Heroes surged free. Civilians calmed.

The worst was over.

One of the officials pointed at Momo's core unit.

"That device," he said. "It neutralized the override field?"

"Actually, Ryuu-"

A crowd swarmed in. Officials, medics, reporters. While they pointed at the wreckage and Momo raised the core unit, I slid into the smoke and shadows.

A juice pouch in one hand. My dignity slightly bruised. Perfect.

Let her have the credit.

She earned it.

Later, on the rooftop.

Sun bleeding over the water. I sat on the ledge, hoodie back up, watching the sky.

Momo sat beside me.

"You could've taken the spotlight," she said softly.

I sipped my drink. "You looked better in it."

She was quiet. Then, "You trust me that much?"

"I knew you would doubt yourself," I said. "I didn't."

She nudged my shoulder. "...Thank you."

"You earned it."

She didn't say anything.

On the departure dock, the sun glinted off the water like it hadn't just watched a tech-powered riot unfold. Support bots hauled scorched equipment back to hidden labs, and scientists whispered about "disaster resilience protocols" like they weren't just covering their asses.

Mei Hatsume adjusted her goggles with one hand, the other clutching a greasy wrench like it was a lollipop.

She zeroed in on me and Momo.

"Hey," she said, voice full of spark and smoke. "If either of you dorks ever want to build weapons of minor mass destruction again, call me."

Momo looked like she wanted to correct the terminology. I just gave her a two-finger salute.

"We'll keep you on speed dial," I said. "Right between 'Emergency Pizza' and 'Blackmail Folder.'"

Mei grinned like a pyromaniac at a fireworks show. "Perfect."

Then she turned and walked off, her boot soles smoking slightly, a test drone orbiting her head like a metal halo.

--

The plane hummed quietly, a rare moment of peace.

Clouds drifted past the window. Most of the class was asleep or comatose from adrenaline drain. Someone was snoring two rows back. Probably Kaminari. Shoji was using his scarf as a curtain between rows. Tokoyami journaled like the apocalypse was nigh.

Midnight leaned over my seat, my arms crossed against the headrest.

"So," she asked, "where did you even learn to engineer like that?"

I didn't even look up. Just muttered around the pen in my mouth, "Hentai. Probably."

Midnight blinked. "...You know what? I'm not surprised."

She walked off.

Across the aisle, Momo sat upright, still scrolling through the updated blueprint- Project Adapt v2.0. The prototype's core module was safely stored below, but the ideas were already evolving and branching.

She smiled faintly, then turned to glance at me.

I was slumped against the window, arms crossed, pen still between my lips. Asleep.

And yet… she smiled again.
