Noah entered the still flat, the soft thud of the door behind him sounding louder than it ought. Paris city lights seeped in through the high windows, painting long streaks of gold and shadow on the hardwood floor.
Scarlet raised her head from the couch where she'd been huddled with a book, already half asleep. She blinked, sat up straighter. "Noah?"
He stopped, still standing by the door, still dripping with the misting rain. His coat stuck to his body, his eyes impenetrable.
Scarlet stood up, worry flashing in her tone. "Where were you? You weren't returning your calls."
He said nothing at first, just walked slowly inside, shedding his coat and hanging it over a chair like he was on automatic. His fingers stalled on the material longer than they needed to.
"Hey, Noah?" she insisted again, softer now. "You okay?"
"I saw him," Noah replied, and the words almost stuck in his throat. "Just… for a second."
Scarlet's breath stalled.
