A sinking feeling crept into Ethan Grant's chest.
Behind him, Sophia was sobbing louder than ever. "Grandpa, why are your hands so cold? Grandpa, please, wake up!"
She patted James Lee's face, trying desperately to rouse him.
Ethan's patience snapped. His sharp voice cut through her wailing: "If you want to cry, do it somewhere else. Don't distract me while I'm trying to save him."
With his sharp, angular features and naturally cold expression, Ethan always radiated an intimidating presence. When angry, he was downright terrifying.
Sophia froze instantly.
Sniffling, she wiped her tears with the back of her hand and stood up shakily. Out of habit, she reached into her pocket for her phone to call 911.
Nothing.
She fumbled again. Probably lost it in the pond.
Then she remembered—it had died earlier, and she'd left it charging inside. She'd stormed out too quickly to grab it.
Panic-stricken, she turned and bolted toward the main house to retrieve it.
