Rael whistled, getting Jane's attention.
"There's an intruder ahead," he said. "Wake Minos up and grab the staff."
Jane flinched, then sprang into action.
As for him, he picked up his sword from the nearby table and held it behind his back as he approached the door.
The heartbeat was just as loud as when he first heard it, and it quickened the closer he got.
But as he placed his hand on the steel doorknob, preparing to swing the door open, he realized something.
There was a faint trace of fear that echoed with every heartbeat.
Rael's eyes widened as he focused on that feeling, and soon, the emotions of the person on the other side of the door bled through.
Unease, panic, fear, determination.
They seemed like a good person, judging by the other minor emotions he felt.
But I won't naively follow that feeling, Rael thought, gripping his sword tighter as he pushed the steel door open with a creak.
To his surprise, what greeted him was a teenage child wearing a doctor's robe.
