"I…I'm so sorry," she stammered. "I thought you were out with Miss Nelly. I assumed someone broke in. Oh my God! I am so sorry." Her words tumbled over each other, clumsy and too fast.
"Still not an answer to my question," Kade said, narrowing his eyes, lips twitching with both irritation and... entertainment.
She blinked rapidly. "What was the question again?"
"I said," he repeated slowly, dragging out every syllable, "what. Was. That?"
"Oh. Right," she breathed. "I was trying to defend myself."
"By… announcing your presence?" he raised a brow, finally letting go of her wrist. She stumbled forward half a step and quickly spun around, face flushed either from embarrassment or proximity. "That's your idea of a sneak attack? You screamed like a dying goose. Pathetic."
He turned his back on her and strolled to the sink, switching off the faucet with a deliberately dramatic twist, then reached for the whiskey glass with the calm of a man who should be annoyed but was mostly amused.
