Chapter 139 - Chapter 139: Catching a Turtle in a Jar

On Link Road, Owen carefully controlled his speed.

He couldn't drive too slowly either. Nina had directed him to avoid the heavily crowded Dresen Square, clearly to prevent any civilian casualties in the upcoming gunfight. However, there were too few cars on Link Road. If he deliberately drove too slowly, it would easily arouse suspicion.

Owen maintained a steady pace while keeping a close eye on the white Toyota in his rearview mirror. Now, there were no other vehicles between them. Although there was some distance, Owen could still make out two men sitting in the driver and passenger seats.

"Estimated time to battlefield: one minute…"

Owen reported through his earpiece while keeping his eyes on the mirror.

"Combat team ready. We can engage at any time…"

The response from the other end gave Owen a slight sense of relief.

Inside the Toyota, aside from the driver, the rest of the men had completed their final checks. Bolts were pulled back, rounds were chambered, and they were fully prepared for action.

In the front passenger seat, the leader, Andrew, turned to one of the men in the back and said, "Call Harvey. Tell him we're ready to move. Ask how things are on his end."

The man responded and was about to take out his phone when Andrew's own phone suddenly rang.

Andrew glanced at the screen, raised his hand to stop his subordinate, and answered, "Harvey, I was just about to call you. How's it going on your end?"

"We're ready. Moving in now!"

"Good, same here. Proceed as planned. We meet at Rally Point One in thirty minutes."

"OK."

After hanging up, the driver looked at Andrew, who nodded. "Go! Move now!"

As soon as Andrew finished speaking, the driver slammed the gas pedal.

The Toyota's engine roared as it accelerated sharply, merging into the lane next to Owen's car, closing in at high speed.

Owen, who had been monitoring the situation behind him, immediately noticed the anomaly. He also slammed his foot on the gas while urgently shouting into his earpiece, "They're making their move early! I'm leading them towards Whitten Street. Get ready for engagement!"

Almost simultaneously with the Toyota's acceleration, Owen sped up as well. The distance between the two vehicles remained nearly unchanged.

"He's onto us!"

The Toyota's driver said in surprise.

But there was no time to dwell on that now. The two men in the back rolled down their windows and started firing outside.

The gunfire rattled through the air, with bullets striking Owen's car. However, they only left marks on the bulletproof glass and failed to penetrate.

Just as the firefight intensified, Andrew suddenly shouted.

"Stop the car!!"

"Screech~~~"

The sharp sound of tires skidding filled the air. Although unsure why the boss had ordered a stop, the driver obeyed without hesitation. White smoke rose from the tires as the car came to a firm halt.

At the same time, Owen instinctively hit the brakes hard as well. Both vehicles came to a strange standstill.

"Something's not right~~"

Inside the Toyota, Andrew scanned the surroundings. The enemy's response was too fast, almost as if they had known all along that they were being tailed. And now, despite their sudden stop, the enemy wasn't running—they stopped as well.

Looking at the surroundings, they were far from the city center, with hardly any pedestrians around. The enemy's car was bulletproof. Adding up all these unusual factors, Andrew immediately realized they had walked into a trap. If he failed to see it now, he wouldn't deserve to lead this team.

"Reverse! This is an ambush! We're leaving~~"

Andrew roared. The driver quickly shifted into reverse, slammed the accelerator, and turned the wheel sharply. The car spun around, straightened out, and took off like an arrow from a bow.

Owen, now behind them, executed the same maneuver. His tires screeched as he accelerated in pursuit.

Nina's frustrated voice came through Owen's earpiece. "They caught on! Tony, get your team after them now! I'm sending units ahead to intercept!"

Back on Whitten Street, chaos erupted. The carefully set trap had failed, and everyone quickly holstered their weapons, jumped into their vehicles, and sped towards the coordinates Nina had just relayed.

The Toyota continued to race ahead at breakneck speed, while Owen followed closely behind. His car, being bulletproof, was much heavier than a regular vehicle, meaning it wasn't as fast. But Owen wasn't trying to engage them in a direct fight—he just needed to keep them in sight.

The two cars roared down Link Road. The Toyota's driver attempted to accelerate and switch lanes multiple times to shake Owen off, but Owen remained steadily behind—neither too close nor too far.

"Ratatatat… Ratatat… Ratatatatat!"

Two men leaned out of the Toyota's windows again and opened fire at Owen. But he didn't even flinch. Their standard assault rifle rounds couldn't penetrate his bulletproof windshield, so he had nothing to worry about.

The scene was eerily similar to the riverside chase from a few days ago. The only difference was that this time, Owen was the one in the bulletproof car, and no matter how much they fired, he was like an indestructible tank.

The Toyota's position was constantly being reported over the radio, allowing Tony's team to gradually close in.

Ahead, the wail of police sirens echoed. The roadblock Nina had arranged had finally arrived. Two police Ford SUVs charged towards the Toyota, forming a pincer maneuver with Tony's team from behind.

"Bang! Bang! Bang… Bang! Bang! Bang!"

Andrew, in the front passenger seat, leaned out and fired at the approaching police vehicles. One of the Ford drivers was likely hit—his car swerved off course and crashed into the roadside. But the other police SUV stayed on course, coming straight for them.

"Screech~~~"

The Toyota's tires screeched as the driver made a sharp turn onto a side road, narrowly avoiding the oncoming police car but allowing the pursuers to get even closer.

With a series of expert maneuvers, the Toyota veered off the road and jolted over a high curb. The front bumper shattered from the impact, leaving the car looking like it was missing a chunk.

The pursuing SUVs followed suit, their undercarriages scraping against the pavement with a cacophony of crunching metal. Though slightly damaged, they managed to continue the chase. However, several sedans in the convoy couldn't make it over the curb and got stuck, their front wheels spinning helplessly in the air.

"Head to Evac Point Three!"

Inside the Toyota, Andrew shouted. The driver understood immediately and sped off, with a long trail of pursuers behind them.

The high-speed chase tore through the city streets, weaving through traffic. While there were pedestrians around, no shots were fired from either side—CTU wouldn't risk injuring civilians.

Under Nina's command, more reinforcements joined the pursuit. The convoy continued to grow. After skillfully evading a few attempts to cut them off, the Toyota suddenly came to a screeching halt at the entrance of a narrow alley.

The car was positioned diagonally, blocking the alley's entrance. The occupants quickly disembarked, and gunfire erupted from behind them.

The pursuing vehicles also skidded to a stop, lining up about ten meters from the alley entrance as both sides engaged in a fierce firefight.

Owen's heavier bulletproof car had lagged behind due to its weight, only arriving now. As he jumped out, the battle had already begun.
