Chapter 201 - Chapter 201: Wang Jian – The King is Paving the Way for Zhao Feng Again!

As they watched Wei King being led away, Ying Zheng waved his hand.

Immediately, the imperial guards stepped forward and lifted the box containing the royal seal and map.

Then, Ying Zheng turned to Zhao Feng before him, smiling warmly.

"Zhao Feng."

"Come with me into the hall."

Before Zhao Feng could respond, Ying Zheng stepped forward, directly grabbing Zhao Feng's right arm and leading him towards the audience hall.

Following Ying Zheng's lead, Zhao Feng walked forward.

Upon seeing Ying Zheng enter the hall, the officials waited for a moment before filing in an orderly manner.

Inside the Audience Hall

The atmosphere remained solemn and imposing.

Zhao Feng was led by Ying Zheng to the steps before the royal throne.

However, instead of sitting down immediately, Ying Zheng turned to the officials gathered before him.

"Ministers."

"Zhao Feng has returned victorious after vanquishing Wei."

"This is not only my joy but also the joy of the entire Qin state."

"From this day forward, the Three Jin territories belong to Qin."

Ying Zheng laughed heartily as he addressed the assembly.

"Congratulations to Your Majesty."

"Congratulations to Great Qin."

The court officials raised their ceremonial tablets and called out in unison.

"Zhao Gao, read the decree."

With a wave of Ying Zheng's hand, Zhao Gao stepped forward.

The officials were taken aback, looking at both Ying Zheng and Zhao Gao with confusion.

"Could it be that His Majesty is about to bestow further rewards upon Zhao Feng?"

Many ministers speculated inwardly.

Zhao Feng had already been promoted to two noble ranks earlier; surely, he wouldn't be granted even more honors.

As all eyes followed Zhao Gao, he unfurled the decree and read aloud in a firm voice:

"The King of Qin decrees:

Zhao Feng, Commander of the Wu'an Grand Camp, has rendered great service to the state. With the fall of the Three Jin states, our Qin has expanded its territory, all thanks to Zhao Feng's achievements.

Today, the King is greatly pleased.

Thus, Zhao Feng is granted the privileges of entering court without haste, being addressed by name in ceremonies, and wearing a sword and shoes in the royal court."

Upon hearing this, the entire court was left in shock.

Everyone's gaze turned toward Zhao Feng, then to Ying Zheng, their expressions filled with astonishment.

In this era, both civil and military officials always carried swords as part of their attire. Martial prowess was esteemed.

However, when entering the palace, they were required to remove their shoes and weapons.

Swords were placed on designated racks outside, and their footwear was stored by palace attendants.

But now, Zhao Feng had been granted an extraordinary privilege: he was no longer required to remove his shoes, and he could bring his sword into the hall.

This honor was unprecedented.

No other official in court had ever been granted such privileges.

The officials looked at each other in disbelief, struggling to comprehend the significance of this decree.

Such privileges signified absolute trust from the King.

Allowing a general to bear arms in the royal presence was a testament to the King's complete confidence in Zhao Feng.

Some officials realized the implications.

This decree directly shattered the recent rumors that the King intended to suppress the Wang and Zhao families.

"Entering court without haste, being addressed by name, and wearing a sword in the royal court!"

"Isn't this the privilege of the infamous warlords of later generations?"

"And now, the King has bestowed it upon me?"

Hearing these familiar words, Zhao Feng couldn't help but remark inwardly.

He thought of figures from later history Dong Zhuo? Cao Cao?

Hadn't they all possessed such privileges, rising above all other officials?

"General, accept the decree."

Zhao Gao turned to Zhao Feng with a respectful gaze.

"Your Majesty."

"This honor is too great; I am unworthy."

Zhao Feng immediately turned and bowed to Ying Zheng.

"What I bestow, you are worthy of."

Ying Zheng smiled, yet his tone was resolute.

"Accept the decree."

His voice carried an unquestionable authority.

Seeing this, Zhao Feng hesitated no further.

"Thank you for Your Majesty's great grace."

He bowed deeply, then stepped forward to accept the decree from Zhao Gao.

"Take your seat."

Ying Zheng smiled and gestured toward Zhao Feng's designated place.

"As you command."

Zhao Feng responded and walked toward his seat, holding the decree.

As he approached the military officials' seating area, he noticed that his father-in-law's usual seat, the highest-ranking among them, had been vacated.

Wang Jian now sat in the second seat, smiling at Zhao Feng.

Clearly, with Zhao Feng now holding the highest noble rank in Qin seventeen ranks in total he was the undisputed first among the military officials.

With his return to court, the chief position among the military officials naturally belonged to him.

"Father-in-law."

As he approached, Zhao Feng lowered his voice and addressed Wang Jian.

"Sit down. We can talk at home later."

Wang Jian smiled as he watched Zhao Feng return.

Wang Jian was naturally pleased.

Especially when he thought about something in his heart, he felt even more delighted.

After all, his son-in-law was the Crown Prince of Great Qin.

"Mm."

Zhao Feng nodded, then took his seat.

When he saw Meng Wu sitting to Wang Jian's right, he also nodded slightly in greeting.

Meng Wu naturally returned the nod.

After taking his seat, Zhao Feng keenly felt many gazes land on him.

Especially from directly across.

Wang Wan's face was shifting unpredictably, his expression flickering as if he were secretly observing.

Sensing Wang Wan's gaze, Zhao Feng felt no fear at all. Instead, he lifted his head and met Wang Wan's eyes directly, his lips curling into a cold smile, his killing intent completely unhidden.

In the past, Zhao Feng had perhaps tolerated them somewhat, not bothering to argue with them. But since they had repeatedly targeted him, the gloves were off. There was no need to fear them anymore.

Feeling the killing intent in Zhao Feng's eyes, Wang Wan's body trembled as if he had been stared down by a fierce beast.

He dared not look any longer and could only lower his head.

"Old fool," Zhao Feng muttered under his breath before ignoring him altogether.

Yan Ting had already made his move. As soon as there was enough evidence, Zhao Feng would make sure Wang Wan was utterly ruined.

"Now that Wei has perished and its territory is fully under our Qin's rule," Ying Zheng declared, his voice carrying authority, "who among you has a recommendation for governing Wei's lands?"

"Your Majesty," an official stepped forward, "I recommend Wang Wen, the son of the Chancellor. He is highly skilled in administration and more than capable of governing a region."

"Father," Hu Hai interjected, turning to Ying Zheng and bowing, "I also have a candidate in mind."

Ying Zheng said nothing, merely looking at him impassively.

"I recommend Lord Hu Ju," Hu Hai declared loudly. "In terms of rank, he holds the esteemed position of Senior Minister and is certainly up to the task."

At this, Fu Su stepped forward. "Lord Hu Ju may have some talent, but he is still somewhat inferior to Lord Meng Yi. I recommend Lord Meng Yi for this critical role."

"I, on the other hand, recommend Minister Yao Jia," Li Si stated calmly as he stepped forward.

At once, numerous officials began putting forth their recommendations.

There was no doubt that in this era, government officials were almost always from noble families or cultivated by powerful clans.

Commoners and those from humble backgrounds rarely had the chance to rise.

Of course, Qin was the first to break this norm. The military merit system was designed precisely to shatter these barriers.

However, that system applied only to the military it had not yet extended to the civil administration.

Governance was not something that could be earned simply through battlefield valor.

Changing this reality would take time.

"They're all fighting over this position," Zhao Feng mused as he watched the scene unfold, a hint of amusement in his eyes.

Just as with the governance of Han and Zhao, governing Wei was also a major achievement.

Despite the heated discussion, Ying Zheng remained unmoved.

Only when the last voice fell silent did he finally speak.

"Have you all finished your recommendations?"

His gaze swept across the court.

The officials all fell silent.

This was the essence of true kingship.

No matter how fiercely the court debated, the final decision rested solely with the King of Qin.

In this era of absolute monarchy, officials could only make proposals the final authority belonged to the ruler.

"Zhao Feng," Ying Zheng suddenly called out, "who do you recommend to govern Wei?"

The unexpected question took Zhao Feng by surprise.

Once again, the entire court turned to look at him.

"Your Majesty," Zhao Feng replied calmly, "I am a military man and not well-versed in civil administration. It would be best to consult the ministers on this matter."

"It is precisely because you are a military man that you would have a clearer understanding of capable officials," Ying Zheng said firmly. "That is why I am asking for your recommendation."

At these words, those who had just nominated their candidates immediately felt their hopes dim.

But among them, perhaps only Wang Jian truly understood the deeper meaning behind Ying Zheng's decision.

"The King is paving the way for Zhao Feng," Wang Jian thought to himself.

"In the army, Zhao Feng's prestige is already unmatched.

"But in the court, he still lacks a strong faction. Most officials either support Fu Su or Hu Hai.

"The King is giving Zhao Feng the chance to place his people in high positions, so that one day he, too, will have a political base in the court."

Wang Jian understood everything clearly.

After all, this was like an open-book test.

If he still failed to grasp it, he would be a fool.

"Your Majesty, do you truly want me to make the recommendation?" Zhao Feng asked with a smile.

"A king does not speak in jest," Ying Zheng replied with a smile of his own.

"In that case, I do have someone in mind," Zhao Feng said. "Your Majesty, do you recall Sand Hill County?"

"Of course," Ying Zheng replied casually.

Once, Sand Hill County had been just another small district in the Qin Empire.

But ever since Zhao Feng's rise, it had become famous across the land.

Everyone who knew of Zhao Feng knew he came from Sand Hill County. It had gained renown because of him.

"The former magistrate of Sand Hill, Yan Bing, was highly skilled in governance," Zhao Feng continued.

"He was transferred last year to Zhao's territory as Assistant Minister under Lord Han Fei, where he has demonstrated his administrative abilities.

"I recommend Yan Bing as the chief official overseeing the governance of Wei."

Since Ying Zheng had given him the authority, Zhao Feng saw no need to be overly modest.

After all, his role was simply to put forth a candidate it was up to the king to approve or reject the choice.

Among all the officials Zhao Feng knew, aside from Han Fei, Yan Bing was the one he trusted most.

And Yan Bing had already pledged his allegiance to Zhao Feng.

Placing him in charge of Wei's governance would be a major achievement.

In the future, when he returned to the Qin capital, he might not reach the prestigious rank of Chancellor, but he would certainly rise to the position of Senior Minister or even Grand Minister.

"Since Zhao Feng recommends him," Ying Zheng declared, "I approve."

Hearing the king's decision, Wang Wan immediately grew anxious.

"Your Majesty," he hastily interjected, "this magistrate is unheard of. We do not know his true abilities. Should we not deliberate further?"

"I second this motion," another official added.

"The governance of Wei is of utmost importance. I believe it should be entrusted to a high-ranking court minister.

"Local officials may have their merits, but they ultimately lack the necessary experience."

"This matter warrants careful reconsideration."

Several other ministers who had made recommendations earlier also stepped forward in agreement.

But Ying Zheng merely cast a glance at them then ignored them completely.

After a moment of contemplation, Ying Zheng spoke, "Fusu, Huhai."

"You have been attending court and observing governance for quite some time now. I will also give you both an opportunity to make a recommendation."

"Go back to your residences and discuss it."

"I allow each of you to recommend one person as a deputy."

Ying Zheng's deep voice carried authority.

As soon as these words fell, the previously uproarious court suddenly quieted down.

After all, from Ying Zheng's tone, the matter was already decided. Although they did not secure the position of the chief official, at least a deputy position was granted. This meant they would still have a role in governing the region and a chance to gain merits from managing Wei's territory.

"That is all."

"Continue with the discussions." Ying Zheng waved his hand, signaling the ministers to proceed.

"Your Majesty."

"The governance of Zhao has now been fully settled."

"It has been more than half a month since Han Fei was due to return to the capital to report on his work."

"May I ask why Lord Han Fei has not yet returned?"

The Grand Censor Feng Jie stepped forward and loudly submitted his inquiry.

The Censorate was responsible for supervising the court officials, and Feng Jie, as the Grand Censor, held the highest position in this office. Though not counted among the Nine Ministers, his rank was equivalent to theirs.

"Regarding this matter."

"I can explain on behalf of Lord Han Fei."

Zhao Feng spoke once again.

Ying Zheng turned his gaze to Zhao Feng.

"When Lord Han Fei received the imperial decree to return to the capital for his report, he learned that Daliang City had been devastated by a massive flood, leaving countless refugees."

"Thus, he led his subordinates to Daliang."

"Thanks to Lord Han Fei's efforts, he managed to stabilize and resettle tens of thousands of refugees, even constructing a new city for them."

"Because of his work, the refugees of Daliang were properly settled, and a major epidemic was prevented. Lord Han Fei deserves immense credit for this achievement." Zhao Feng spoke firmly.

Upon hearing this, Ying Zheng's eyes showed a trace of appreciation.

He thought to himself, "The reports from the Black Ice Platform indicate that among the court officials, only Han Fei is closely associated with Feng'er. Han Fei surrendered to Qin back then also because of Feng'er. Now, this appears to be true."

"Whenever someone in court attacks Feng'er, Han Fei is always the first to speak up."

"Their relationship runs deep."

In an instant, Ying Zheng understood the connection between Zhao Feng and Han Fei.

"This being the case."

"Not only is Han Fei without fault, but he has also rendered great service."

Before Feng Jie could say anything further, Ying Zheng directly voiced his judgment on the matter.

Feng Jie, seeing this, bowed and admitted, "It was my mistake to assume otherwise."

Having said this, he stepped back.

"Deliver an edict to Han Fei."

"Since he is currently overseeing affairs in Wei, send him an urgent decree. Inform him that his deputy, Yan Bing, shall assume responsibility for governing Wei. Once the appointed officials arrive in Wei, Han Fei may then return to the capital to report."

Ying Zheng spoke calmly.

A minister responsible for drafting edicts immediately responded in acknowledgment.

The court continued its discussions.

Most of the deliberations revolved around the governance of Wei.

By the time the court session concluded, it was already evening.

In Zhangtai Palace

A banquet had been prepared.

This feast was held specifically to honor Zhao Feng's triumphant return.

However, the only attendees were Ying Zheng and Zhao Feng.

"Conquering a nation within half a year."

"You truly fought an exceptional campaign."

"Initially, I estimated that it would take at least a full year, or even longer." Ying Zheng praised with a smile.

This battle had indeed been remarkable.

Though it had taken six months, if calculated from the moment the King of Wei surrendered, it had only been five months.

The remaining time had been spent taking control of Wei's cities.

"This victory is also due in large part to the efforts of the Hangu military camp. If not for their containment of half of Wei's forces, my Wuan camp would not have been able to march straight to Daliang." Zhao Feng said humbly.

"The Hangu camp aside, any military force in that position could have achieved the same containment."

"The main credit for this battle still belongs to you." Ying Zheng smiled, directly dismissing Zhao Feng's humility.

"I heard some rumors on my way back to Xianyang."

"It is said that some officials in the court have accused my father-in-law and me of holding too much military power, fearing a potential rebellion. I wonder if these rumors are true?" Zhao Feng asked, testing the waters.

Ying Zheng looked at Zhao Feng with a smile. "What? Are you trying to test me?"

"I would not dare."

"I am simply curious about these rumors." Zhao Feng chuckled sheepishly.

However, deep down, Zhao Feng was a little helpless. "The King of Qin is truly too wise. He can see through everything in just one sentence."

"Throughout history, people have said that foolish rulers are difficult to serve, but standing before such an intelligent and kingly ruler is even more challenging." Zhao Feng thought to himself.

Seeing Zhao Feng's expression, Ying Zheng merely smiled faintly and said,

"Do you think I am the kind of ruler who fears powerful ministers?"

Upon hearing this, Zhao Feng immediately shook his head without hesitation. "Your Majesty is not."

"So."

"Though there are accusations in court, whether I fear you or not is for me to decide."

"Do you truly believe I would turn against Wang Jian? Against you?" Ying Zheng asked with amusement.

Zhao Feng nodded and smiled. "I believe Your Majesty would not."

"In that case."

"Why concern yourself with idle rumors?"

"As long as I am here, who would dare touch the Wang family? Who would dare touch you?" Ying Zheng declared in a protective tone.

With that, Zhao Feng no longer pursued the matter.

It seemed that after his father-in-law left Zhangtai Palace that day with a grim expression, there had been some other reason behind it. This misunderstanding had been observed by those in the palace, leading to speculation.

"But this is good."

"If the court believes that His Majesty has begun to fear us, they will be less inclined to play their political games." Zhao Feng mused.

Ying Zheng lifted the wine jug, poured himself a cup, and then poured another for Zhao Feng.

Then, smiling, he asked, "Who do you think I will choose as my heir?"
