Lina's breath caught in her throat. Fredrich stood there in the shadows, his features chiseled in the dim light. His eyes, once so calm and unreadable, now burned with something she couldn't quite decipher—anger, perhaps. Or was it disappointment? Fear?
He didn't move. He didn't need to. His mere presence filled the room like smoke, thick and choking. The woman behind the glass had pressed herself to the wall, her eyes wide and shimmering with unshed tears.
"What are you doing here?" Fredrich's voice was low, a controlled growl that made the fine hairs on Lina's arms rise.
"I—I heard something," Lina stammered, trying to swallow the lump in her throat. "Outside. I came to check and… and I saw the room was unguarded, so I—"
"You decided to snoop." His words were clipped, his tone like a whip.
Lina's fists clenched. "No. I was worried. And now I see I was right to be."
Fredrich's jaw twitched. "You shouldn't be here."
