"Now, for the moment you've all been waiting for! Awards and gifts!"
More excited gasps and applause filled the air. Without delay, winners from various events were called up to the stage. The lowly-hanging sun still shone brightly on them.
A group of sixth-graders climbed onto the stage to receive small medals and gift bags. An eighth-grader proudly hoisted a plastic trophy above her head, receiving cheers and applause from her parents and friends.
After announcing the top winners for each grade, Principal Smith gave a heartfelt speech. He thanked the teachers for their hard work, the parents for their support and the students for their cooperation.
"Sports Day is never about winning or losing," Principal Smith said, his voice warm and filled with pride, "It's about spirit, community and coming together. I'm proud to say that's exactly what we did today."
