She gently wiped Haisley's forehead, as if that touch carried affection. But for Haisley, the touch only triggered a wave of nauseating disgust.
"You're sick, you need help!" Haisley struggled, but her body was still too weak. Her voice trembled, her eyes filled with fear mixed with anger.
"I'm not the one who's sick," Veronica whispered, leaning in so close her breath brushed against Haisley's face. "It's the world," she said. "The world that keeps trying to tear us apart."
"Because we were never meant to be together!" Haisley shouted. She squirmed, trying to break free, but it was no use. The bindings on her wrists and ankles were too tight. Chafing wounds had started to form on her skin, but she didn't care.
Veronica's face twisted with rage. She grabbed Haisley's jaw with a grip that made her wince in pain.
