Chapter 48 - "Precipice of Defeat"

I stood at the edge of the rooftop, watching the battle unfold. Queen Bee was losing, but not at the pace I needed. She was supposed to hold out longer, make it until the heroes arrived.

Then I saw it, a red streak in the sky.

Stormy Weather's lightning strike hit her like divine wrath.

It was turn now time.

Queen Bee's body crashed into the pavement, limp and smoking. The scent of scorched concrete hit me like a slap. For a heartbeat, I stood there s if frozen. Then I was moving—sprinting, leaping, falling fast. I landed hard beside her.

"Chloé! Stay with me!" I dropped to my knees, cradling her head with trembling hands. My fingertips faintly went through her hair.

Stormclouds churned overhead. I looked up and there she was. Aurora. Hovering mid-air, eyes hollow, lightning coiling around her like a curse. Stormy Weather had never looked more powerful.

I stood slowly. Prepared for another performance of a lifetime.

"Aurora. You don't have to do this," I said. "This isn't you. I know what it's like to be used. To be a pawn in someone else's game. But you still have a choice."

She faltered.

Just for a moment as if the akumatized version of her had remembered me.

Then the wind screamed, and so did the storm.

I barely had time to raise a hand before an airburst slammed into my chest and flung me backwards.

I crashed into something. oddly soft, solid, bracing.

Ladybug.

"Gotcha," she whispered, lowering me gently. She looked down at Queen Bee's unconscious form, and then back at me.

"You did good," she said.

Not good enough.

She moved forward, stepping into the eye of the storm like she belonged there. She always did.

"You've become powerful, Aurora," Ladybug said calmly, circling her like a lion. "But what are you trying to prove? That you can destroy us? We already know you're strong. You don't have to keep proving it."

Stormy Weather raised her umbrella. "Save your speeches, Bug."

That's when Cat Noir's staff shot from deep within the horizon and slammed into her spine like divine retribution. She was gone in an instant, launched into the clouds with a scream.

Cat was still far away.

But my focus was on Chloe for now.

I rushed back to her, whispering assurances I wasn't sure she could actually hear. "You're safe. I promise."

A thunderclap shattered the moment. Clouds began to gather into a single point

Ladybug leapt to the tallest rooftop and summoned her Lucky Charm. A… metal pipe?

A big blue ball of lighting formed in the center itching to be released.

Confusion flashed across her face, then vanished as lightning ripped downward. She threw it into the air. The pipe was atomized, absorbing the bolt. Ladybug spun her yoyo to shield us standing behind her from the residual arcs.

Then came the return. Stormy Weather, fully charged, eyes burning twirled her umbrella. The wind that hit Ladybug flung her back like a ragdoll into the sky.

Cat Noir caught her midair, "Still got it. Fashionably late, but effective." He bantered.

Cat landed with Ladybug and they began there brawl once more

And together, they fought.

Ladybug from the front. Cat from behind.

They managed to disarmed her, once. Just once. It wasn't enough.

But I wasn't worried.

This was within my control. After all I needed them to struggle

Ladybug turned her head, panting. "Cat Noir, distract her!"

He blinked. "Wait, what?!"

She was already gone.

Right on cue.

Exactly as I planned...

------------------------

A few minutes had gone by. Cat Noir relying solely on his godly reflexes and staff to delay and avoid stormy weather for as long as possible.

I didn't know how long he'd last at this ra-

She landed directly in front of me eye determined.

She held out a box. Black. Simple.

'The Snake Miraculous,' she said. "I need your help."

A breath caught in my throat.

I looked into her eyes. Then down at the box.

"You've got it."

Yes! This is my perfect victory!

I opened it. A jade glow pulsed from within, smooth and perfect. The bracelet fit my wrist like it had always belonged there.

Sass appeared, eyes wise and unreadable. "Say 'Second Chance' to activate."

"Second Chance," I whispered. the excitement almost leaking from my tone.

And everything changed.

Green light wrapped around me like silk. A cobra mask flared to my eyes. Gloves, boots, scale armor. My eyes flashed with the certainty of someone who knew the future—because I did.

Time was mine.

Unlimited rewinds.

I checked out my new suit, It wasn't as green as I expected. Blue and white lined every inch of my suit. and I even had white claws, strange.

But what felt truly amazing was the immeasurable power that coursed through my entirety.

ladybug was already in the fray it was time to test my well deserved power. I flipped the miraculous setting my first 5 minute timer and jumped into battle.

It was pure devistation spread throughout the city as the fight dragged

The first second chance was used to save Cat Noir from a direct hit.

The second—Ladybug, pulled back before being snared.

The third I simple watched my masterpiece. analyzed, traced the pattern of Aurora's attacks.

Then we acted.

I told Ladybug to create a counter-vortex with her yoyo. Rewound.

Guided Cat Noir to use his staff as a lightning rod. Rewound.

Then I took to the sky.

No power.

Just me.

I taunted her, let her believe she had me. She threw everything she had into a final apocalyptic strike.

volcanos erupting across paris aimed straight to me.

Heated winds lashed. The lightning was grounded.

But thanks to that.

Her umbrella fell. A catacysm delt with it with no issues.

And Ladybug's yoyo caught the butterfly in mid-air.

"No more evil-doing for you, little akuma," she whispered.

It was over.

The sky cleared.

I stood tall. Unshaken. The Snake Miraculous hummed against my wrist, still warm.

Ladybug walked up, lips pressed into a thin line.

She held out her hand.

"Thank you. Now, please return the Miraculous."

I looked down at it.

Her fingers didn't move.

The moment stretched.

I'd won. What the hell was going on?

And now I had to give it up?

I didn't speak.

Lila Pov-

I stepped out of my mom's apartment like any other day. Gave her a warm smile. Let her believe I was just a daughter going to class, not someone already threading webs in ten different directions.

"Love you, Mom!" I called back in a sign, then took the usual shortcut through the alley.

Routine is camouflage. Couldn't let anyone find out I live there.

I walked slowly it was somewhat darker than usual due to the morning rays barely appearing above the skies.

Then it suddenly got brighter.

'huh, is the sun coming up that quickly' I turned my hed to the direction I'd just come from.

A glow. Not streetlight. Not reflection.

A ripple in the air, like liquid glass.

A portal.

It opened cleanly, silently. Just enough for a hand to slip through.

No arm. No face. Just a hand.

It dropped something.

A letter?

Then vanished.

I stared. Three seconds. Maybe four.

Then I picked it up.

The envelope read: To Me.

Yeah. That tracked.

Inside, a single page. Handwritten.

"Dear Me,You're right. Take L's phone, then—"

I didn't finish reading.

Another portal tore open, shrieking this time.

A black claw, so fast I didn't have time to move swiped at the letter.

Ash.

I didn't scream. I didn't flinch.

I just processed. The hand already gone.

So, whoever, knew where I'd be.

They knew enough to warn me. Or stop me.

They referenced someone as "L." Luka.

The only person I know who starts with that name, but what's on his phone?

What's he hiding?

And who doesn't want me to find out?

I looked up at the empty sky.

Something was watching.

Fine.

Let them watch.

'It didn't matter after all' I thought eyeing the pile of ash

I always get what I want.
