That was the worst part. It didn't matter who Rice picked—anyone would have been better than Emerald.

Mrs. Florida was so furious she could barely speak. After a long pause, she finally muttered bitterly, "Who knows what underhanded tricks she used to get this spot? She's just like her mother—always scheming, always willing to do whatever it takes."
The implication was clear—she was accusing Emerald of using dirty methods to get ahead.
Unfortunately for her, Iris happened to overhear the comment.
Immediately wiping away her tears, she snapped, "Who are you calling unscrupulous?! You're a woman too—why are you tearing down another like this?"
