ENRIQUE
I woke to the sound of loud, annoying beeping.
I tried to turn my head, but something pulled in my chest and hot pain radiated through my ribcage like lightning. My body was heavy and everything beneath my skin ached even blinking hurt.
I gritted my teeth, trying to regulate my breathing.
"Welcome back," a soft voice said beside me.
I blinked, turned my head slowly, and saw a woman in light blue scrubs sitting at the edge of the bed, typing something into a tablet.
She looked up and smiled. "You gave us quite the scare, Mr. Garcia."
I opened my mouth but my throat was dry and felt like sandpaper.
"Water," I croaked.
She nodded and poured a cup from the tray, raising it to my lips carefully. I drank in slow sips, my body relaxing considerably.
When I finished, I sank back against the pillows and stared up at the ceiling.
"How…?" My voice cracked again. "How did I get here?"
