Chapter 50 - Act 47 - Dinner and Hell

The evening sun dipped below the Mishima skyline, casting long shadows through the stained-glass windows of Veronica's apartment. The air smelled faintly of roasted garlic, jasmine incense, and the subtle undertone of blood—courtesy of Veronica's personal touch.

Inside, the room was set for what was euphemistically called a "dinner party." A low table groaned under the weight of dishes: spicy vampire sashimi, charred fire fairy skewers, and a suspiciously glowing crimson punch. Veronica, ever the hostess, hovered by the stove in a silk kimono that clung provocatively to her curves.

Machio Araki sat stiffly on a floor cushion, his posture betraying how tense he was. Beside him, Natsume Tachibana's arms were crossed, her eyes flickering like molten gold with simmering jealousy. Opposite them sat Kira Tachibana—vampire playboy, devil-may-care grin, and all the confidence of a storm about to break.

Azumi Araki, Machio's mother, radiant and commanding, perched gracefully on the edge of her seat. Her silk robe was slightly loosened at the collar, revealing a tantalizing hint of her collarbone, an unconscious invitation. Her eyes, however, carried the weight of years, loneliness, and unspoken secrets.

Veronica clapped her hands. "Alright, everyone! Let's try to keep the drama under the 'melodramatic soap opera' level, yeah? I'm serving this dinner so you don't murder each other. At least not before the main course."

Machio exhaled sharply. "I still can't believe we're doing this."

Natsume shot him a glare. "You're the one who dragged me into this."

Azumi smiled gently, the warmth of a mother mixed with the cool mystery of a vampire elder. "Family dinners are complicated, Machio. But they're necessary."

Kira, reclining with devilish ease, smirked. "So let's get this started. Who's ready for some truth and wine?"

Machio's stomach twisted. He knew where this was heading.

Uneasy Beginnings

The conversation started cautiously, with Veronica guiding them through casual topics — favorite foods, recent battles, and the latest school gossip. But beneath the surface, tension crackled like static electricity.

Machio stole glances at Kira, who was too relaxed for someone sitting across from his mother. Kira's casual touches on Azumi's hand — brief, but intentional — made Machio's skin crawl. And Natsume, like a coiled spring, radiated jealousy with every glance and every quiet sigh.

Veronica, sensing the undercurrents, decided to stir the pot.

"So, Kira," she said with a grin, "You've been hanging out with Azumi a lot lately. Care to explain what's going on between the two of you? Because Machio looks like he's about to implode."

Kira's grin widened, unfazed. "Honestly? I like her. More than just a friend. I'm not going to lie or back down. She's… amazing."

Azumi's cheeks flushed softly, a rare crack in her composed exterior. "Kira is a good person. He's been my anchor through some dark times."

Machio's jaw tightened. Anchor? That word stabbed him in the gut.

Natsume's eyes narrowed. "So you're telling me my boyfriend's mother is... dating your brother? Or whatever this is?"

The room froze.

Azumi's eyes flicked toward Natsume, sadness and conflict warring within. "It's complicated, Natsume. Kira and I… we both found something in each other that we needed. But that doesn't mean I want to hurt Machio or anyone."

---

Natsume's Breaking Point

Natsume's voice trembled as she leaned forward. "How am I supposed to feel? My boyfriend's mom is... with the guy I'm supposed to trust? Does anyone think this is okay?"

Machio opened his mouth, but no words came.

Veronica, ever the witty buffer, stepped in. "Look, jealousy is natural, but let's not destroy the plates, okay? We can survive a little emotional chaos without turning this into a demolition derby."

Azumi placed a calming hand on Natsume's arm, but Natsume yanked it away. "Don't. Just don't."

Machio's heart twisted watching Natsume's pain. He wanted to say something—to fix it all—but the weight of everything pressed down on him.

He muttered, "I'm sorry, Natsume. I... didn't know."

She shook her head bitterly. "No one asked if I wanted this. It's like I'm a character in someone else's story."

---

Machio's Storm

The pressure became unbearable. Machio slammed his fist on the table, standing abruptly. "Enough!"

The room gasped.

Machio paced, the crimson markings on his arms faintly glowing with his rising frustration.

"I'm tired of feeling like I'm trapped between everyone's expectations. Between my powers, my mom's past, Kira's... whatever this is, and Natsume's heartbreak."

His voice cracked. "I'm just trying to survive! To protect the people I care about without turning everything into a mess."

Azumi stood as well, her voice steady but filled with fierce emotion. "Machio, none of us wanted it to be like this. But love and loyalty aren't simple things."

Kira nodded, stepping forward. "I'm not here to break anyone apart. I love Azumi, and I'm willing to face whatever comes."

Natsume's eyes welled with tears, her voice barely a whisper. "Then why does it hurt so much?"

---

Veronica's Roast: Comic Relief or Truth Bomb?

Veronica raised a hand, silencing everyone with a wicked grin.

"Alright, enough crying and drama. Welcome to the Dysfunctional Family Circus. Machio, your life's now officially a soap opera with a dash of supernatural spice."

She waved a finger. "You've got a mom dating your boyfriend's brother, a jealous vampire girlfriend, and a playboy who won't quit. Plus, a harem king aura that makes all your problems worse."

Everyone blinked.

She smirked. "Seriously, if this was a TV show, I'd binge-watch the whole thing just for the ratings."

Machio sighed. "Thanks, Veronica. That makes me feel so much better."

Veronica shrugged, raising her glass. "No, but seriously. You're all messy, but you're family. And family's worth fighting for."

---

Azumi's Vulnerability

Later, when the others left the room, Azumi sat beside Machio, her eyes softer now.

"I've been lonely, Machio. Since your father disappeared, I've carried so much weight."

She sighed, tracing faint patterns on his arm with a finger. "Kira is... different. He listens. He understands the parts of me no one else sees."

Machio's heart twisted, torn between anger, jealousy, and empathy.

"I never meant to complicate your life," she whispered. "But sometimes, we need others to help us survive."

Machio nodded slowly. "I get it. I just wish things were simpler."

Azumi smiled weakly. "Me too, son. Me too."

---

Natsume's Struggle

Meanwhile, Natsume sat alone, staring out a window at the crimson moon rising.

Her thoughts tangled in a storm:

How can I trust Kira when he's with my mom? Am I just jealous, or is this a betrayal?

I love Machio, but this whole situation feels like a trap.

Her hands clenched the window sill.

"I have to find a way to accept this... or I'll lose him too."

---

Closing: Fragile Bonds

Outside Veronica's apartment, the night deepened.

Machio stepped onto the balcony, gazing at the stars.

His powers pulsed faintly beneath his skin—a reminder that his destiny wasn't just about romance or family drama.

It was about protecting the fragile bonds that held his chaotic world together.

No matter how tangled, no matter how painful.

Because sometimes, family wasn't perfect.

But it was all you had.
