Chapter 24 - Test (II)

[Back to the mc P.O.V]

The test continue at a rapid pace, the sounds of impacts and occasional yelps echoing through the chamber. It did not even last 3 minutes per group before the reflex test then came to an end with a final buzzer.

After the test reflex test end, it was straight to the defense test with no pause, no rest at all, it was all business as the administrator herded us toward the next station.

The defense test was a quagmire to me, a complete mystery. I had no idea how the defense test will be done, having expected some kind of physical endurance trial. Seeing that I had no idea it made really curious on what it will be like, my stomach tightening with anticipation.

The administrator clapped his hands for attention. "For the defense test you would be tested based on your endurance to pain," he announced, his voice carrying through the now-silent room. "The longer you last the higher your score." His eyes gleamed as he added the warning. "And know that you would feel pain to the point that you may faint." He held up a small device. "So if you have reached the point where you can't take anymore, you can press the your buttons which will be given to you when the test begins." His voice turned stern. "And know if you remain stubborn thinking you have 10 head, know that the Hunter association will not be hold responsible if you faint."

He paced before us, his boots clicking on the hard floor. "And there is also some short time side effects that will last for one day or worse three days," he continued, counting on his fingers. "Like uncontrollable bladder, uncontrollable emotional outburst and nose bleed." He fixed us with a stern look. "Know that non of this will happen if you do not try to do pass your selves."

His voice took on a dangerous edge. "If you like listen or don't listen, if you faint or have any side effects and you dare to blame the hunters association you would be dealth with 'nicely'."

Looking at the administrator again, I saw that unsettling smile creep across his face when he said nicely, but it disappeared after I blinked my eye, making me wonder if I'd imagined it.

"And for the test we would use a bracelet," he continued, holding up a plain metal band, "while giving you another bracelet that will transfer the pain to your brain." He tapped his temple meaningfully. "Know that this bracelet is a special bracelet that can send the amount of pain the first bracelet transmit to your brain, or nothing if you have a high defense." He smirked. "Know that this bracelet knows your defences."

A holographic display appeared again showing: "And the score is the same as the reflexes calculation."

15 to 30 seconds - 50 to 100 points

30 to 45 seconds - 101 to 200 points.

45 to 60 seconds - 201 to 300 points.

60 to 75 seconds - 301 to 400 points.

75 to 90 seconds - 401 to 500 points.

90 to 105 seconds - 501 to 600 points.

105 to 120 seconds - 601 to 700 points.

120 to 135 seconds - 701 to 800 points.

135 to 150 seconds - 801 to 900 points.

As soon as he was through explaining, the test begins with another sharp buzzer.

The participants was given two bracelet - one plain metal band that would transmit pain to you, the other a glowing red band that would transmit it to your brain. And a small black button to use to give up, its surface cool against our palms.

Soon with a final warning glance from the administrator, the test begin in earnest.

I could not feel anything in the beginning, just a slight tingling in my wrist where the bracelets sat. After the 30 seconds mark, the pain was subtle, like a mild sunburn. The 45 second mark I can feel the pain well but I can still manage, though my teeth were now clenched. From 60 seconds it became almost unbearable, like someone pressing a hot iron to my skin, but I still manage through sheer willpower. When the 75 seconds chime sounded, the pain almost short circuited my brain, a white-hot agony radiating through every nerve. I quickly press the give up button with trembling fingers. Immediately the pain stopped, leaving me gasping.

I was still feeling the pain 10 seconds after, my muscles twitching uncontrollably. Reaching the 15 seconds mark after stopping I was finally able to get myself under control, though my hands still shook.

Looking around me through tear-blurred vision I could see two people on the floor, their bodies limp. They where unconscious, foam at their lips. I could see myself there if I had failed to stop, the thought sending a shiver down my spine.

After I was through panting and wiping my face, the next batch was called to do the test, their faces pale with apprehension.

...

After the first batch was done, staggering out of the testing area, the next batch was called forward. And like that batch after batch was called until my batch was called thirty minutes later, the wait doing nothing for my nerves.

"If your name start with the letter 'E' you know the drill," the administrator called, his voice now slightly hoarse from hours of explanation.

We where first taken to the strength test machine, its surface worn from countless impacts.

I stepped up, took a deep breath, and hit the strength machine with all my might. The display flashed rapidly before settling on my score - I scored 320 on the strength base machine, a respectable number.

Next we went to the reflex machine, the glass chambers rising once more. There I lasted for a long time thanks to my enhanced senses. The projectiles became a blur but my body moved instinctively. I scored 502 on the reflex machine, the number glowing green above my head.

The defense was a little bit on the low score, the pain nearly overwhelming despite my preparations. I scored 250 on the defense scored, my vision whiting out before I hit the button.

By the time it was over and the scores were tallied, I scored 357 on the test overall. I was now a c ranked hunter, the designation appearing on my new hunter ID with an official stamp.

After it was over and the adrenaline faded, I went back to the receptionist area after my results was given to me in a sealed envelope.
