Lan Zhi and Qin Ru reached the edge of the sprawling encampment, their footsteps kicking up small clouds of desert dust. The crowds had thinned considerably this far from the city center, but Qin Ru couldn't shake the sensation of being watched. Her trained assassin's instincts screamed danger, yet each time she whirled to look, she found nothing but empty air. Deep down, she recognized the familiar presence - the same one she'd felt during her days with the Viper Clan - but she pushed the thought aside, unwilling to face its implications.
A natural cave formation caught Lan Zhi's attention. People moved in and out of its mouth with purpose, carrying scrolls and small boxes. The sight piqued her curiosity as the administrator in her wondered what business occurred away from the main gathering.
When Lan Zhi stepped toward the cave entrance, Qin Ru's hand shot out, gripping her arm. The assassin shook her head, her eyes wide with warning.
