Chapter 139 - Chapter 139: Ace Challenge (4)

Gladion studied Roland's butterfree.

'Butterfree is a tricky Pokemon to deal with—status moves, psychic attacks—but it's not fast. Hisoka's speed gives us the edge, even on this ice field since the battle would mostly be fought in the air.'

The ice terrain limited Hisoka's Ground-type moves, but its Flying advantage over Butterfree was undeniable.

'Gotta hit hard and fast before Roland pulls a stunt. Butterfree has a range of moves and while it looks cute and tiny, it is pretty annoying to deal with one.' Gladion thought as he glanced at Roland, whose weathered face betrayed a mix of determination and resignation.

'He knows I'm out of his league—Pryce fell to two of my Pokémon—but he's here to show his own worth.' Gladion respected the grit, his smirk softening. 'Let's give him a show.'

"Hisoka, Thunder Fang!" Gladion ordered, his voice slicing through the crowd's din. Hisoka's grin widened, bubble gum popping with a loud *snap* as it dove, fangs crackling with electric sparks.

The Gliscor's speed was a blur, slicing through the air toward Butterfree, which fluttered frantically, trying to dodge but compared to a Gliscor it was slow.

Hisoka clamped down on its wing, a jolt of electricity surging through, sparks dancing across the ice. Butterfree spasmed, wings faltering, and the crowd erupted, Milo and Lila, Gladion's younger twin siblings, leaping in the stands. "Big Brother Hisoka's zapping 'em!" Lila shrieked, waving a Hisoka banner. Milo, clutching a gum-chewing Gliscor plushie, yelled, "Fry that butterfly!"

Roland seeing that he can't have Gliscor too close to Butterfree called, "Psybeam!"

Butterfree, still twitching from the electrocution, fired a glowing beam of psychic energy. The beam slammed Hisoka in the air, sending it crashing onto the ice, skidding into a spike that cracked on impact

The crowd gasped, but Hisoka scrambled up, cackling, its tail wagging like a deranged puppy. Roland pressed taking advantage of the distance, "Tailwind!"

Butterfree's wings whipped up a gust, a shimmering wind boosting its speed, narrowing the gap with Hisoka.

The announcer hyped, "Tailwind's in play! Roland's Butterfree's closing the speed gap! This is getting spicy!"

Gladion's eyes narrowed, expecting a stronger Psybeam. 'That could hurt if he keeps it up. Gliscor does not have many range moves that he can use in the air. And if he keeps spamming Psybeam and slamming Gliscor against the ice, it would be over.'

"Harden, Hisoka!" Hisoka's exoskeleton gleamed, its defense rising as plates tightened.

Roland, however, had other plans, his voice sharp. "Sleep Powder!" Butterfree scattered a cloud of shimmering spores, drifting across the ice, unaffected by defense.

The crowd held its breath as Hisoka inhaled, its wings drooping, eyes fluttering shut. Gladion's smirk didn't waver, his psychic senses calm.

'Bug-types love status moves—that's why I chose Hisoka for this match.'

"Sleep Talk," he said.

Hisoka, snoring mid-air, twitched, its body moving on instinct, claws glowing faintly.

"X-Scissor!" Gladion ordered. Hisoka's claws slashed wildly, a cross of energy cutting through the air.

Roland shouted, "Dodge!" Butterfree, its speed boosted by Tailwind, flitted sideways, but Thunder Fang's delayed paralysis kicked in, wings seizing mid-flight. Hisoka's X-Scissor connected, slashing Butterfree's delicate frame, sending it spiraling to the ice, fainted.

The stadium exploded, fans leaping, Milo and Lila screaming, "Big Brother Hisoka's the best!" Hisoka, still asleep, snorted, blowing a bubble that popped.

Roland recalled Butterfree, his wry smile intact. 'Three down—time for the field change. Hopefully it would be something that would help my bugs.'

The referee stepped forward, "With three of Roland's Pokémon defeated, the battlefield will switch!"

The overhead screen flashed field types—rock, water, desert—stopping on a grassy field. The arena rumbled, the ice sinking as a grassy terrain rose with some trees on it, their leaves rustling.

The technology was a marvel: layered fields stacked underground, shifted by hydraulics, a feat that had required excavating a mountain's worth of earth. The crowd buzzed, marveling at the technology that switched fields with a button.

Gladion's seeing the field smirked 'Grass field with some trees—perfect. Hisoka's Ground moves are back on the table.'

Roland tossed his next Poké Ball. "Go, Pinsir!" A massive Pinsir emerged, its spiked pincers snapping, exoskeleton scarred from countless battles, its eyes burning with defiance.

Hisoka, woken during the break, chewed fresh gum, its creepy grin unsettling Pinsir slightly.

Gladion's grin widened, his psychic mind racing. 'Bad move, Roland. A Flying-type like Yanmega or a Dusnox could've taxed Hisoka—he's tired, bruised, can't fly well now. But Pinsir on grass? Hisoka's ground type moveswill crush it.'

Hisoka's stamina was low, but the terrain was ideal. "Earthquake!" Gladion ordered, his voice a whip using the strongest ground type moves right of the back.

Hisoka slammed its claws into the ground, the earth tearing open with a deafening roar. Fissures snaked across the field, grass buckling, trees trembling as rubble collapsed inward. Pinsir stumbled, swallowed by the ground and the rubble fell on him, the crowd gasping as dust billowed.

The announcer screamed, "Earthquake! Hisoka's ripping the field apart! Is Pinsir buried under the rubble?!"

But Pinsir, a testament to Roland's Ace status, burst through the rubble, ragged but unyielding, pincers gleaming. Roland, sensing that Pinsir was at his limit and could not take much damage went all-in.

"Superpower, then Brick Break!" Pinsir glowed, muscles bulging as Superpower surged which boosted its next attack tremendously at the cost of lowered stats after the attack, its pincers raised for Brick Break.

Gladion, misjudging the power boost, called, "Protect!" Hisoka raised a golden barrier, but Brick Break's first chop shattered it, the second slamming Hisoka's chest.

The Gliscor crumpled, fainted, its gum popping one last time as it hit the grass.

The crowd roared, stunned, the announcer hyping, "Superpower Brick Break! Pinsir flips the script! Hisoka's down!"

Gladion recalled Hisoka,. "Nice work, buddy—rest up."

He then tosses the next pokeball with a smirk. It was the perfect time to release his ace for this match too.
