Chapter 37 - A Clash of Personalities

The sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Ahicia's office, casting a warm glow on the stacks of papers and neatly organized plans scattered across her desk. She sat across from Lysandra, the two of them engrossed in discussing a visit to the orphanage. Lysandra's brow furrowed as she tapped a pen against her notepad, occasionally growling softly when something didn't align with her meticulous expectations.

"We should bring enough supplies for at least three months," Lysandra said, her voice firm. "And ensure the kitchen staff is aware of any dietary restrictions for the children."

Ahicia nodded, her tail swishing thoughtfully. "I'll make a list of what we need. Maybe we can—"

The door to the office swung open abruptly, cutting Ahicia off mid-sentence. Anara strolled in without knocking, her vibrant green eyes scanning the room with a mischievous glint.

Lysandra's ears flattened instantly, and she rose to her feet, her growl low and threatening. "What do you think you're doing?" she snarled. "You can't just barge in here."

Anara smirked, entirely unfazed by the hostile reception. "Relax, Lysandra. I just needed to speak with Ahicia. Didn't think it would be such a big deal."

Ahicia held up a hand, signaling Lysandra to stand down. "It's alright," she said, her tone calm but curious. Her crimson eyes fixed on Anara. "Why are you here, Anara?"

Anara leaned casually against the doorframe, her expression unreadable. "I thought it'd be nice to see what the infamous Ahicia is up to. You seem to keep yourself busy."

Ahicia frowned slightly, unsure whether Anara's words were a compliment or a subtle jab. She exchanged a glance with Lysandra, who still looked ready to pounce at a moment's notice.

"If you have something to say, get to the point," Ahicia said firmly, her posture straightening as she exuded authority.

Anara's smile widened, a hint of admiration flashing in her emerald eyes. "I like you," she said simply. "But don't worry, I'll keep my distance… for now."

Anara paused at the doorway, glancing back over her shoulder. Her emerald eyes gleamed with a knowing look as she addressed Ahicia, her voice low and almost playful. "Oh, and Ahicia… make sure to keep Damian very close to you. Or else… someone might try to steal him away."

Ahicia's ears twitched, and her crimson eyes narrowed slightly. "Is that a threat?" she asked, her tone calm but edged with warning.

Anara smirked, shrugging lightly. "Just a friendly piece of advice."

With that, she turned and sauntered out of the office, leaving an air of tension in her wake. Lysandra let out a sharp breath, her growl still lingering in her chest.

"I don't trust her," Lysandra muttered, her eyes narrowing at the now-closed door. "She's trouble, Ahicia. Mark my words."

Ahicia sighed, her tail swishing restlessly. "I'll keep that in mind. For now, let's get back to work."

But even as they returned to their plans, Ahicia couldn't shake the feeling that Anara's sudden visit was more than just curiosity. The fox-shifter's intentions were as enigmatic as the sly smile she'd left behind.
