Chapter 241 - Chapter 241: Xiaotian Dog and Upside-down Goat, Winter Preselection

Qin Hongying instructed Zhai Zhong and Wen Ji to set out from the Bishui Dao Academy to discuss further collaboration.

Meanwhile, Zhao Xing was preparing to leave Twin Island. After being busy for so long, he planned to return to Bixian County.

Firstly, he wanted to check on how Zhao Ruide and Madam Cai were doing. Secondly, he intended to observe Zhao Zheng's progress at the Bishui Dao Academy. Additionally, he needed to make a visit to the royal residence.

It was already mid-November, and he hadn't yet seen the "Old Demon Woman" this year. This wouldn't do! Bonds are built through frequent visits; it's impossible to go a year without meeting.

Moreover, the "Old Demon Woman" had promised him the shell of a ten-thousand-year-old Dark Turtle, as well as a spot in the preselection competition. Since he heard she had returned to Bixian County, he had to take advantage of the opportunity to visit while she was there.

He now understood why Sun Shizhao was so excited. Meeting Princess Youruo wasn't easy.

However, before leaving, Zhao Xing needed to prepare a bit; he couldn't show up empty-handed.

"For gifting the Old Demon Woman, sincerity matters. I'll head to the plantation area and pick some fruit."

Zhao Xing ran to a private plantation on Lu Island, a place under strict protection from magical formations that prevented any unauthorized access.

With a token in hand, Zhao Xing passed through the barrier and descended into the plantation. He had planted various seeds and saplings he had brought from the Military Realm upon taking his position on Twin Island. Calculating the time, it had almost been a year.

Considering Princess Youruo's status, she lacked nothing. Zhao Xing couldn't come up with any truly unique gifts. He started by transplanting several Golden Bamboo stalks in a grove.

Golden Bamboo, a fifth-grade ornamental plant, had a crystal-clear, verdant stalk, with golden-colored leaves. It could also serve as a scepter for Shennong's practitioners. Though its practical use was limited, its appearance was impressive, enhancing magical displays with a radiant, gem-like sheen. Zhao Xing wasn't fond of such flashy items, but nobility adored them for their elegant effects.

"Up!" Zhao Xing transplanted 88 stalks onto the Taicang airship, a vessel dedicated to moving crops. He then floated the airship a short distance away to a cave that connected to an underground magma lake.

There, he chose a dark red, five-meter-high willow.

"A fifth-grade Crimson Willow, with flames flowing through its branches, forming a fiery crimson curtain as they drooped, with drifting seeds that resembled bursting fireworks."

Zhao Xing pruned seven of these willows, making them more ornamental, and then transferred them to the airship. Finally, he arrived at the plantation's center, where twelve large trees were planted.

Only one of these trees had blossomed and borne fruit, producing just nine.

"The sixth-grade Purple Petal Fruit is mature. I'll take these to the Old Demon Woman." Zhao Xing picked the nine fruits.

Even after investing heavily in constructing the Ground-Returning Formation to turn the area into a "secondary treasure land," the Purple Petal tree only barely matured, yielding low-grade, sixth-grade fruits.

Through careful care and adjustment of environmental factors, only one Purple Petal tree matured in an entire year. Woody plants had longer growth cycles, especially for sixth-grade specimens, which already reached the limits of Zhao Xing's cultivation abilities.

The last time in the Extreme Night Sea, the sixth-grade plants were vine-based and herbaceous. Growth cycles generally follow this order: woody plants take longer to grow than vines, which take longer than herbaceous plants.

If, for instance, Liu Tianning had given him a seventh-grade woody plant instead of vines, Zhao Xing wouldn't have wanted it. The time required was simply too long.

Even in the Pure Essence Soil cultivation stage, planting trees right away would be too taxing on his body. In the Self Sect, Shennong practitioners who grew trees typically dedicated generations to a single tree.

The seedlings might start with a grandfather, continue through the father, and eventually reach the maturity stage only in the hands of a grandson or great-grandson. It might take several more generations to see results.

During the Great Ancestor's reign, the Grand Shennong Wu Cheng cultivated a rare, extraordinary divine tree (exceeding the ninth grade), which reportedly has been alive for over 2,500 years and is still not fully mature. After seven generations of Grand Shennong practitioners, it still hasn't borne fruit.

In Shangluo Academy, there's a divine branch of a Rare Treasure Tree, which is a grade below the extraordinary divine tree but still highly potent. However, it's only passed down to the Self Sect leader, who typically doubles as the academy's head.

"Just about ready."

Having prepared the gifts, Zhao Xing boarded the airship and left Twin Island.

Upon returning to Bixian County, he first visited Dongyang County to see his adoptive father. Upon arrival, he found the residence decorated with lanterns and filled with festive cheer.

A group of servants surrounded Madam Cai, showering her with congratulations, while Madam Cai held her head high with great pride.

"Whoosh~" Zhao Xing landed in the courtyard and found Zhao Ruide handing out celebratory money.

"Adoptive Father, what's the good news? I seem to be in the dark," Zhao Xing asked.

"Xing'er, you've arrived just in time," Zhao Ruide chuckled. "Madam just confirmed her pregnancy. You're going to be an elder brother again."

"Congratulations, Father!" Zhao Xing laughed.

Thanks to the wealth and connections Zhao Xing brought back, Zhao Ruide had made substantial donations to the "Charitable Institution" of Nanyang County's official residence. He received an honorary title as a "Charity Doctor," a position without tangible benefits but one that opened a path to a Seventh Rank in personal cultivation.

Already a martial artist, Zhao Ruide had advanced to the Ninth Rank at the age of 61 after consuming just a few of the treasures Zhao Xing provided. When he moved to Bixian County, Zhao Ruide, with free time on his hands, accepted a minor post in Dongyang County's patrol.

For the Marquis Yuanrang's father to serve as a minor patrol officer was naturally a simple matter. In a year, Zhao Ruide advanced to Deputy Inspector in the Dongyang Patrol Bureau and even reached the Eighth Rank in martial arts. This advancement eradicated any of his former injuries.

With these improvements, Madam Cai soon became pregnant again.

"Does Father wish for a daughter or another son?" Zhao Xing inquired.

"A cherished daughter would be just as welcome as a noble son," Zhao Ruide laughed. "You and Zheng'er already stir up enough mischief."

Zhao Xing chuckled, nodding in agreement. It was true: he had already uprooted the entire family to move over a million li away, causing quite a bit of fuss. Zhao Zheng, too, was never an easy child. He rarely heeded his father's instructions and spent his time climbing rooftops, catching fish, lighting firecrackers near the latrines—an endless source of trouble.

"I also hope for a younger sister," Zhao Xing smiled. "She would surely be more well-behaved than Zheng'er."

After chatting with Zhao Ruide for a while, Zhao Xing prepared to head to the Prince's residence in the county. Before he left, Zhao Ruide held him back, saying, "I asked a few gentlemen in the county to help choose a courtesy name for you, and we've narrowed it down to four options."

"Which four?"

"Zeyu, Yuanyu, Xizhen, and Chen'an."

"A gentleman like jade, bringing blessings to the world—Zeyu seems fitting for your name. This was suggested by Yang Taigong, a magistrate in the county."

"An extraordinary talent, confident and resolute—Xizhen suits your character well. This one was chosen by Yue Lu, the previous governor of Bixian County."

"As for Yuanyu, with its associations to wood and earth, it aligns well with your role as a Shennong, one who protects the people. Liu Sicheng from the Princess's residence suggested it."

Zhao Xing smiled, "Father knows so many influential people these days. Who suggested Chen'an?"

Pointing to himself, Zhao Ruide replied, "Chen'an was my choice. I hope you'll find peace and safety with each passing hour."

Zhao Xing's smile softened, and he gave a respectful bow. "Then, as you wish, my courtesy name will be Chen'an."

A joyful smile spread across Zhao Ruide's face.

On the twelfth of November, in the twenty-first year of the Jingxin Era, just after the start of winter, Zhao Xing returned home and spent a day there before heading to the Prince's residence to pay respects to Princess Youruo.

"Master, your student is here to greet you."

"Here you are, but why bring so many gifts?" Princess Youruo asked, her eyes, however, showing a glimmer of joy.

Because Zhao Xing's gifts weren't just any objects; they were items he had grown himself and carefully pruned, making the Golden Bamboo and Crimson Willow even more ornamental. The Purple Petal Fruit, a sixth-grade treasure, reflected both thoughtfulness and Zhao Xing's abilities, showing he hadn't wasted the resources the princess had given him.

"These are a token of my appreciation," Zhao Xing said. "When I first came here a year ago, I planted these for you."

"A year ago?" The Princess's smile grew as she heard this.

Though such items weren't particularly useful to her, Zhao Xing's gesture showed genuine thoughtfulness.

"Come, walk with me and help me plant these."

"Yes, Master."

Following Princess Youruo, Zhao Xing moved the Golden Bamboo and Crimson Willow into the garden.

"Quite lovely," Princess Youruo remarked with a pleased nod.

"I'll have Sicheng take you to choose the ten-thousand-year-old Dark Turtle shell I promised you," she continued. "When you're finished, stay for dinner before you leave."

"Yes, Master." Zhao Xing respectfully bowed and followed Liu Wanliang, the Prince's Chief Steward, toward the treasury.

As Chief Steward, Liu Wanliang was responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of the royals, a post he held with utmost loyalty, having even followed the princess to the Holy Light Court after her marriage. Many of her private dealings were managed by him.

The royal treasury wasn't just a single room but an entire palace complex, each hall housing a different kind of treasure.

Liu Wanliang led Zhao Xing through a lake and into an underwater crystal palace, where Zhao Xing was momentarily dazzled by the array of rare treasures, each item neatly placed and displayed.

"Marquis Yuanrang," Liu Wanliang gestured to an inner hall adorned with aquatic plants and corals, where enormous turtle shells lay in various sizes.

"Marquis Yuanrang, the ten-thousand-year-old turtle shells are here. There are Dark Turtle shells, Fire Turtle shells, Crocodile Turtle shells, Dragon Turtle shells…" Liu Wanliang explained.

"Feel free to choose whichever one suits you."

Zhao Xing wasn't greedy; he selected only one ten-thousand-year-old Dark Turtle shell.

"I won't need to inspect them closely. I trust you to select a ten-thousand-year Dark Turtle shell for me."

"Just one?"

"Only one."

"Very well." Liu Wanliang nodded, moving forward with a wave of his hand. "Rise!"

The ground cracked open, and a massive object, glowing faintly, emerged from beneath the lake. To Zhao Xing's surprise, an entire secondary chamber lay beneath, containing even more treasures.

A small mountain slowly rose from the lake's depths. When its full size appeared before him, Zhao Xing was taken aback.

It was enormous! The shell measured nearly a thousand meters in length, with an elliptical top and a flat base, standing about fifty meters tall. It resembled a small mountain.

Each hexagonal pattern on its back could cover a whole apartment.

"The patterns on a ten-thousand-year Dark Turtle's back hold layers of natural laws. If used for practicing the Turtle Divination Technique, it could bear much greater costs." Zhao Xing mused.

Back when Liang Ruohai performed divination for him, if there had been a ten-thousand-year-old Dark Turtle shell nearby, he might not have faced such a steep price. The shell could have absorbed the toll instead.

However, it wasn't something that could be used directly. Once he brought it back, he would still need to refine it using a fire-forging technique.

"To fully activate its potential, it needs to be tempered with heavenly fire for about half a year," Zhao Xing noted mentally.

With a flick of his hand, Liu Wanliang summoned the massive shell, placing it onto a transport vessel docked by the lake.

"Thank you, Sir Liu," Zhao Xing said, bowing with respect.

"No need for thanks, Marquis Yuanrang," Liu Wanliang replied politely. "This transport ship will stay here for now, as the Princess has prepared a few more gifts for you. We can collect them later, once everything is ready."

Additional gifts? Zhao Xing was taken aback.

As expected of the Princess of the Eastern Sea, she never gave just one gift.

Following Liu Wanliang, Zhao Xing arrived at another palace in the royal complex.

"Woof, woof!"

"Arroo~"

Faint sounds of dogs barking reached them, and Zhao Xing halted in surprise.

Before they entered, Liu Wanliang explained, "This is the Divine Hound Palace."

"Her Highness knows you intend to participate in the Myriad Beasts Competition, so she's allowing you to pick a pup from the Divine Hound Palace."

"There are many renowned breeds here, including the Ten Great Divine Hounds."

"Even a Divine Hound?" Zhao Xing was astonished.

"Indeed," Liu Wanliang nodded. "Marquis Yuanrang, are you familiar with the Ten Great Divine Hounds?"

"The Frost-Flower Eagle, Star-Gaze Wolf, Golden-Winged Kyan, Blue-Water Qiu, Black Jade Li, Huang Leopard, Snow-Paw Lu, Sudden Hawk, Spotted Jing Tiger, and Blue Lion. These are the Ten Great Divine Hounds."

Liu Wanliang gave a slight nod of approval. "Since you know, I won't go into detail. In the Divine Hound Palace, pups of all ten breeds are available for you to choose from."

"As for the adult hounds, they're bonded by soul contracts to their handlers. Hounds differ from other beasts; their loyalty is unwavering. Even if a soul contract is dissolved, they won't change owners willingly. Forcing a new bond would only lead to their decline."

"The eastern wing also houses famed hounds like Taohua, Wulong, Jade Dog, Huangcang, and Yellow-Ear—these are well-known battle hounds and are just as fierce as Divine Hounds."

Zhao Xing nodded. The renowned hounds possessed powerful bloodlines that gave them an initial advantage, yet their true potential depended on their training.

"Woof!"

"Arroo~"

Upon entering the Divine Hound Palace, Zhao Xing opened his Heavenly Eye, scanning the kennels.

The famed Taohua, Huangcang, Yellow-Ear, and Wulong hounds were all slender and agile, falling under the category of coursing hounds, or "sighthounds."

Though mystical, Zhao Xing didn't prefer sighthounds. They were well-suited as pets, but for fighting, they lacked the strength he was after.

This narrowed down his options significantly since nine out of the ten Divine Hounds were sighthounds. Only the Blue Lion was a mastiff breed.

"A real warrior should own a mastiff."

With this thought, Zhao Xing stopped in front of the Blue Lion kennel.

"Sir Liu, I'll choose the Blue Lion."

Liu Wanliang raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? Among the sighthounds, some are skilled fighters. Each of the Ten Divine Hounds has unique strengths. The Blue Lion merely excels in strength."

The Blue Lion's primary traits were power and endurance, with physical strength and stamina unmatched by other Divine Hounds.

"Yes, I'm certain," Zhao Xing replied. "I have a preference for mastiffs."

Liu Wanliang nodded, gesturing to open the barrier of the Blue Lion kennel, then accompanied Zhao Xing inside.

"Arf! Woof! Grrr!"

Upon entering, the Blue Lion pups immediately started barking, though they were only in their infancy. The smallest was barely a month old, and the largest, just three months. Though they lacked intimidation, they had a certain adorable charm.

Scanning the enclosure, Zhao Xing quickly identified three of the more promising pups.

"In the same feeding environment, these three pups have grown faster and stronger. Their future potential is clear," he thought, using his skills in divination to select the three best candidates.

Moving towards the corner, Zhao Xing stopped by the three pups.

"You have a keen eye, Marquis Yuanrang," Liu Wanliang commented.

"Sir, please just call me Chen'an."

Liu Wanliang chuckled, "Chen'an, your discerning eye immediately picked out the strongest three. Have you studied animal divination?"

"A bit," Zhao Xing replied modestly.

"Bring the soul contract," Liu Wanliang called out. An attendant stepped forward, holding out a collar-sized ring, though it was big enough to fit an elephant.

The moment Zhao Xing gripped it, a binding force drew out a strand of his soul essence.

Three pups caught the scent, growling with interest. The dominant territorial instincts of mastiffs kicked in, and the three Blue Lion pups barked, forcing the others to back away.

Zhao Xing advanced a few steps toward them, but instead of approaching, the three pups retreated each time he moved forward.

After the third step, Zhao Xing stopped, sighed, and turned away. He could forcibly take one of them, but fate couldn't be forced.

Holding the contract ring at chest height, he extended it toward the pack. "If any of you are willing to come with me, come forward and pass through this ring."

After speaking, Zhao Xing stood silently, observing. If none of the pups approached, he would give up on the Blue Lion and consider a sighthound instead.

Having learned destiny-based techniques, Zhao Xing had developed a belief in fate.

Eight pups slowly approached, drawn by a blend of curiosity and intrigue. But just as one was about to nudge its nose through the ring—

"Swoosh!"

A shadowy figure leapt from the back, deftly stepping on the backs of its peers to reach the ring. It bit down on the ring, attempting to pull it off.

This particular pup—a small Blue Lion with patchy fur—held the ring, trying to wrest it from Zhao Xing's grip. Despite its efforts, the ring didn't budge, leaving it to dangle comically midair.

Amused, Zhao Xing noted the pup's antics. It seemed to think of the ring as a toy.

When it failed to pull it down, it released the ring and plopped to the ground, though it continued to frolic around.

"Woof!" The small Blue Lion kept the others at bay, warding them off from the ring.

This pup was notably young, just a month old, and had a feisty disposition. Its fur was patchy, bearing bite marks across its head, back, and legs.

"This one's the most combative," observed the attendant. "It's constantly fighting, even challenging the larger pups."

Intrigued, Zhao Xing stepped closer. Surprisingly, this scrappy pup, while warding off its peers, didn't shy away from him. Instead, it curiously looked up at him.

Zhao Xing crouched down, "Do you want to come with me? If so, step through this ring."

The ring had shrunk to a more manageable size. Holding it in one hand, Zhao Xing held it out at ground level.

After sniffing for a moment, the scrappy pup wagged its tail and ducked through the ring.

With a flash, the ring contracted, forming a faint golden collar around its neck. Zhao Xing felt a subtle connection form with the little Blue Lion, confirming the soul contract was complete.

"Congratulations, Marquis Yuanrang," the attendant said with a respectful bow.

"Chen'an," Liu Wanliang chuckled, "the Blue Lion isn't usually people-friendly, yet this little one took a liking to you. It seems you two are truly fated."

"Indeed, fate plays a part." Zhao Xing lifted the pup, though it quickly squirmed in his grasp, eager to explore.

Setting it down, Zhao Xing allowed the pup to roam freely within the palace. Watching the energetic Blue Lion dart around, Liu Wanliang asked, "Chen'an, have you thought of a name?"

As they exited the palace, Zhao Xing glanced back at the pup, which had leapt onto a white jade column and howled up at the sky.

"I have a cat named Ao Tian; this little one shall be called Xiao Tian."

With a proud Ao Tian cat and now a spirited Xiao Tian dog, Zhao Xing felt like he finally had the full pet duo.

That evening, Princess Youruo invited Zhao Xing and Ji Zixuan to accompany her for a stroll around the lake.

"Why pick just one?" the Princess asked as they walked. "I was planning on giving you a few more slots in the Myriad Beasts Competition."

Zhao Xing replied, "For competitions, quality trumps quantity. I'm mainly joining this winter's preselection for the experience. The three spots you gave me, Master, are already more than enough."

The Myriad Beasts Competition held preselection rounds every year, extending up until the decade before the official event. This year's winter preselection slots for the Purple Clouds Islands had already been filled. The Princess's arrangement was a special exception.

Princess Youruo nodded. "If you wish, I could still provide a few fourth-grade battle beasts and assign skilled handlers for assistance."

Zhao Xing politely declined. He sought to leverage the Princess's influence without becoming overly dependent, as it could complicate future advancements.

He smiled, "Thank you, Master, but I've already benefited so greatly. If Master were to intervene further, it might harm her reputation. I don't want people to talk behind her back."

The Princess smiled, "Who would dare criticize me? But you have a point."

"I heard you've done well in your contract with the Bishui Dao Academy. Even Qin Hongying inquired about you at the royal residence."

"With such achievements, you've certainly upheld your teacher's reputation."

"It's time to let you take on the world on your own. Otherwise, your teacher might scold me for meddling too much."

Standing beside them, Ji Zixuan couldn't help but feel admiration. Her senior brother, Zhao Xing, had the strength to refuse even beneficial opportunities, proving once again that he was truly extraordinary.

"I heard your adoptive father is planning to hold a coming-of-age ceremony for you. Is that true?" Princess Youruo suddenly recalled something. "I remember Liu Wanliang made a suggestion for your courtesy name, something like 'Yuanyu,' if I recall correctly. Which one did you choose in the end?"

"Chen'an, meaning 'peace in every hour.'"

"Ah, that's quite fitting."

They continued strolling together for a while until Zhao Xing noticed that Princess Youruo seemed slightly fatigued. Sensing this, he rose and bowed respectfully. "Master, please don't overexert yourself. I will take my leave now."

"Go on, but do come to visit the royal residence whenever you're free."

"Yes, Master."

Content with his accomplishments, Zhao Xing, now complete with both a loyal cat and dog, loaded up his gifts, including the ten-thousand-year-old Dark Turtle shell, and returned to Dongyang County.

On November 13th, Zhao Ruide organized a formal coming-of-age ceremony for Zhao Xing.

He sent invitations to friends, colleagues, and superiors he had met in Dongyang County and Bixian County over the past year. Additionally, Zhao Ruide extended an invitation to the Bixian County royal palace, but as Princess Youruo was away on business, she wasn't in the county.

However, she discreetly sent Liu Wanliang, the Chief Steward of the royal household, to attend the event.

Yet, news spread quickly, and soon enough, Zhao Ruide had to prepare hundreds of additional invitations.

After all, Liu Wanliang held the most senior position and had been with Princess Youruo the longest, so his attendance immediately attracted the attention of various officials in Bixian County.

Before long, many people approached the Dongyang County magistrate and the inspectorate's lead to request invitations from Zhao Ruide, each citing various tenuous connections to justify their attendance:

"I'm the superior of the superior of Zhao Ruide's superior; surely, I can attend to celebrate, right?"

"I'm the one who recommended Zhao Ruide for his post, so giving me an invitation is hardly too much to ask."

"I was the previous head inspector in Bixian County's Inspectorate. Though I left just a year before, Zhao Ruide almost served under me. Attending makes perfect sense."

As a result, a minor deputy inspector in Dongyang County ended up hosting high-ranking dignitaries from across Bixian County.

Boatloads of guests arrived, each with their own reasons for attending. Many came not because of the banquet itself or even familiarity with the Marquis Yuanrang but simply for the opportunity to network and possibly connect with prominent figures.

Had the banquet lasted longer, officials from Chongming Prefecture might have joined the fray too.

Late that night, after the guests had all dispersed, Zhao Xing sat in a water pavilion, chatting with Chen Shijie.

"For a mere coming-of-age ceremony, it turned into quite the grand affair. Anyone who didn't know better might think a high-ranking official was hosting this banquet," Chen Shijie remarked with a laugh.

"Who could have guessed?" Zhao Xing chuckled. "These people caught the scent and flocked here, making it impossible to turn them away. Some even issued commands to my father's superiors to ensure they'd receive an invitation."

"One of the former heads of the Inspectorate shamelessly forced his way in, despite no longer being in office. It's both amusing and frustrating."

Chen Shijie sighed. "The official circles inland are complex, full of opportunists swaying with the wind. Serving in the military is simpler—fewer twists and turns."

Zhao Xing glanced at him thoughtfully. "Did something happen at Firefly Island? Has someone been giving you trouble?"

Chen Shijie shook his head. "I encountered some unpleasant matters, but it's still within manageable bounds. No need for you to get involved."

Zhao Xing, after all, had gained considerable influence through Princess Youruo. While it was appropriate for him to benefit from this, meddling on behalf of Chen Shijie would be an overreach, possibly perceived as exploiting the Princess's name for leverage.

Reaching too far could backfire, especially considering Zhao Xing's rank as a mere Sixth-Rank Supervisor and third-class Marquis.

What if, one day, Princess Youruo no longer lent her support? Or if she had a falling out with Liu Tianning?

Chen Shijie didn't want Zhao Xing wasting his connections or reputation on his behalf.

"There's something else I want to remind you of," Chen Shijie continued.

"While it might seem impressive to attract so many fifth-rank officials from the county with a simple coming-of-age ceremony, don't get carried away."

"Remember, the Princess isn't married to your teacher. If, one day, she and your teacher part ways and withdraw all support, you'll need to stand on your own."

Chen Shijie's advice was heartfelt. Only he could have delivered such a cautionary note to Zhao Xing in his current moment of triumph.

Zhao Xing nodded, appreciating the reminder. "I understand. Thank you."

Another person might not have been willing to heed such advice, but Zhao Xing was receptive and thoughtful.

He was also aware of the truth in Chen Shijie's words. Based on past events, if things played out as they had in his previous life, Princess Youruo and Liu Tianning were likely to clash by the time of the Era of Great Governance.

Chen Shijie smiled. "Why the formal thanks between us? By the way, why didn't Long Xiao show up? Didn't you invite him?"

Zhao Xing took out a ground mirror, sighing. "I did invite him, but he claimed his duties were overwhelming, and his superiors didn't allow him time off."

Chen Shijie scoffed. "He's bluffing. I looked into the situation in Red Stone County's Coastal Patrol Office. It's a cushy position with hardly any duties."

Zhao Xing raised an eyebrow. "He didn't even come back for the New Year; surely he must be genuinely busy?"

"I checked; he's up to no good." Chen Shijie smirked. "This scoundrel is entangled with a woman."

"Really?" Zhao Xing's interest piqued. "Tell me more."

Chen Shijie chuckled. "You taught him to use security regulations to crack down on pirates, so he's been tirelessly patrolling since he assumed his post."

"Two months ago, I forced him to confess that during one anti-pirate raid last year, he encountered the fifth-ranked 'Azure-Eyed White Dragon Army' of the Eastern Sea Corps."

"And he even fought against Bai Yang, the commander of the White Dragon Army."

"With Long Xiao's strength, that commander had no choice but to suffer the beating. But Bai Yang isn't just anyone; he's the grandson of Bai Yunwu, the Azure-Eyed White Dragon King."

"Afterward, Bai Yang got his older sister Bai Ling, a fifth-rank Warden, involved, and they both confronted Long Xiao."

"Did they manage to beat him?" Zhao Xing asked, intrigued.

"At first, Bai Ling used her authority as Warden to frequently requisition Coastal Patrol personnel, forcing them into dangerous missions alongside her naval forces," Chen Shijie explained, laughing. "But, as they clashed, the two eventually took a liking to each other."

Chen Shijie continued, "I asked around at the Red Stone Coastal Patrol Office. That rascal, the Deputy Officer, hasn't returned in half a year, always entangled with Bai Ling."

"I suspect he's about to become the Azure-Eyed White Dragon King's future son-in-law."

Zhao Xing listened with wide eyes, unable to hide his shock.

While the Azure-Eyed White Dragon Army was nominally under the Eastern Sea Corps, it operated with significant autonomy, largely free from direct oversight.

The army consisted predominantly of aquatic clans, and the Azure-Eyed White Dragon King, Bai Yunwu, was a half-human, half-dragon hybrid with the unique ability to transform into a dragon—a second-ranked peak powerhouse in his dragon form.

In the ocean, Bai Yunwu's strength was near unparalleled.

The Dragon King's position was hereditary, with some connection to Princess Youruo's family. In terms of seniority, even Princess Youruo had to address him as "Uncle Bai."

For Long Xiao, a banished warrior, to find himself involved with a high-status and powerful "white, wealthy beauty," this was a dramatic reversal of fortunes, like something out of a tale of sweet revenge.

"Forgetful and seduced by beauty, he deserves a beating!" Zhao Xing fumed. "When he comes back, he's definitely getting a thrashing from me."

On November 25th of the Jingxin Era, Qin Hongying sent Zhai Zhong and Wen Ji to Twin Island's Dragon Horse Directorate to discuss a collaboration with Zhao Xing.

Their opening proposal was a hundred-billion contract to raise fourth- and fifth-grade companion beasts for the Dao Academy.

Moreover, they planned to renew the contract annually, estimating that the deal could extend over twenty years.

If the twenty-year agreement went through, it could amount to around two or three trillion in total.

Zhao Xing was somewhat surprised but not overly shocked. While there were plenty of Shennong practitioners skilled in Hou's Transformation Technique, few could use it to cultivate high-grade spirit beasts.

Yet Zhai Zhong and Wen Ji didn't stop there. They put forth several conditions along with Zhao Xing's compensation:

First, if Zhao Xing signed a twenty-year contract with the academy, he would have to maintain the collaboration regardless of his future appointments.

Second, they wanted his younger brother, Zhao Zheng, to receive the same treatment as a true disciple within the Dao Academy.

Third, the academy offered to grant him the honorary title of Honorary Transmission Master, and if he maintained the contract for ten years, they would even appoint him as an honorary dean or vice dean.

Additionally, they promised manpower and rare marine plants from Bishui Dao Academy.

As the conversation went on, Zhao Xing sensed that something was off. These "conditions" seemed more like gifts aimed at recruiting him.

Zhao Xing began to suspect that the Dao Academy wasn't primarily interested in the public contract but rather in him personally.

"Are the two of you aware of my relationship with Princess Youruo?" Zhao Xing asked, looking at Wen Ji and Zhai Zhong.

He felt it necessary to clarify that his connection with the Princess wasn't as deep as they might imagine. If the Bishui Dao Academy was offering these benefits solely due to her, there might be no need for such extensive gestures.

"We're fully aware," Wen Ji smiled. "Who in the academy hasn't heard of Liu Tianning?"

"But it's still uncertain whether my teacher will actually marry the Princess," Zhao Xing added, going deeper. "He doesn't appreciate her overreaching to assist me excessively."

Zhai Zhong quickly gestured, "No misunderstanding here, Chen'an. We're here because of your talents, and this collaboration has nothing to do with the Princess. She's completely unaware of it."

"Your innate abilities are extraordinary; mastering Shennong techniques from all three sects, not to mention skills like the Myriad Straw Puppet, Lightning Hou Transformation, and Primordial Instant," Zhai Zhong praised him, clearly sincere.

These words left Zhao Xing feeling appreciated. The academy's genuine interest was reassuring and made it easier for him to consider their proposal.

Zhai Zhong wasn't exaggerating either; the academy truly valued him.

In Bishui Dao Academy—and even throughout the whole Pinghai Prefecture—there was a scarcity of high-level Shennong practitioners. The prefecture's late establishment and prior existence as a maritime territory meant few Shennong clans had roots there. The coastal environment lacked the strong foundations and resources needed for high-level cultivation.

Over the past two thousand years, almost every talented Shennong practitioner had migrated inland to the more established Dao Academy branches on the Daoyuan and Yuanping Continents.

Since top academies were situated far away, there were few local opportunities to attract or retain talent. Therefore, Bishui Dao Academy saw in Zhao Xing the rare chance to fill a significant gap in its Shennong capabilities.

Taking a moment to think, Zhao Xing replied, "The academy's order is substantial and will consume a great deal of my focus in the coming years. We'll need to scale it back by about thirty percent. However, I'm open to discussing the other terms."

Given his existing connection to Bishui Dao Academy through Princess Youruo, Zhao Xing didn't feel the need to commit himself too deeply. Additionally, he preferred to diversify his achievements instead of relying exclusively on the academy's backing.

After seeing Zhai Zhong and Wen Ji off, Zhao Xing retreated to the back courtyard.

They hadn't left empty-handed; both had also come bearing gifts.

Since Zhao Xing was the head of the Dragon Horse Directorate and was preparing for the Myriad Beasts Competition, Qin Hongying had selected several rare beast cubs from the Beast Division as gifts for him.

The gifts included a fifth-grade adult Tiger Jiao and an adult Azure Luan with perfect fifth-grade bone quality.

They also provided several rare-bloodline cubs.

"Baa~"

As he inspected the cubs, Zhao Xing's vision blurred momentarily as a strange force seemed to affect his soul, causing his body to step back involuntarily.

"Hmm?" He immediately activated his Soul Armor to dispel the strange energy, then turned to look at the corner of the cabin where a pink-furred goat was confined.

"A Spirit Illusion Goat?" Zhao Xing was startled. "That's quite a rare breed."

Spirit Illusion Goats, also known as "Upside-Down Goats," were exceedingly uncommon.

Zhao Xing recalled encountering a red-furred Spirit Illusion Goat during his trials at the Grand Dream Academy, but this one, with its pink fur, was even rarer.

"Impressive, truly a testament to the academy's resources," Zhao Xing thought. "They've shown real sincerity by gifting me an Upside-Down Goat."

The Spirit Illusion Goat possessed innate soul-based abilities, making it incredibly valuable, especially since human cultivators rarely mastered soul-based techniques. This goat, with its soul-manipulating skills, was a priceless asset.

"I'll need to qualify in the Eastern Sea preliminaries to access the Ancient Dragon Court. With a cat, a dog, and now this goat, I have three beasts to train for future competitions."

With the three slots granted by Princess Youruo, Zhao Xing could bring three battle beasts to the Purple Cloud Arena for the December winter preselection.

Each year, four seasonal preselection tournaments—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—were held, each with a different focus and theme. From the four seas, top-ranking pets would advance, with the process lasting from the 20th year to the 30th year of the Jingxin Era. This method gradually sifted out the most powerful combat beasts.

Over the next decade, the strongest beasts from each of the four seas would compete in inter-sea battles, with the most elite eventually selected to represent the Great Zhou and face the aquatic tribes in the Myriad Beasts Competition. Success in these battles would determine the number of slots to enter the Ancient Dragon Court.

As the year's end approached, Zhao Xing planned to bring Mountain Cat Ao Tian, the Tiger Jiao, and the Azure Luan to the Purple Cloud Archipelago's western zone for the winter preselection tournament.

The Upside-Down Goat and the Blue Lion, still too young for competition, would need more time before they could participate.

Before setting out, Zhao Xing submitted his beast lineup—Ao Tian, Tiger Jiao, and Azure Luan—for approval.

Upon receiving the endorsement from Chongming Prefecture, the Divine Selection Office of Twin Island's Dragon Horse Directorate became fully functional.

On November 29th, with the Dragon Horse Directorate's staff and Sun Shizhao watching closely, Zhao Xing led his three beasts to perform the sacrificial rites of the Divine Selection Office.

Moments later, three golden beams of light emerged from the altar, descending upon Ao Tian, the Tiger Jiao, and the Azure Luan.

"Well, Ao Tian, you're officially a government-funded cat now."

Zhao Xing chuckled as he watched the Mountain Cat gleam with golden light, basking in the national blessing. This ritual was mostly symbolic, as their qualification was still pending and hadn't significantly boosted their powers yet.

However, in name, Ao Tian had now become an "official cat."

During the competition, Ao Tian would be entitled to monthly provisions from the court. Outside of tournament seasons, however, he would receive no extra benefits.

Participating in the competition also earned Ao Tian a monthly 500-point stipend in the military merit ranking—a substantial amount! Zhao Xing's annual salary was 50,000 points, with additional bonuses from his honorary titles totaling about 800,000 points.

If Ao Tian managed to qualify for the Eastern Sea competition, he'd receive a formal stipend and an official rank of his own!

As Ao Tian's owner, Zhao Xing would also share in these blessings.

Should Ao Tian reach the inter-sea competition and secure a victory, he'd not only earn awards and titles but potentially even a noble rank.

With such accomplishments, Ao Tian would earn the respect of others, who would then address him as "Lord Ao Tian."

As Ao Tian's owner, Zhao Xing would benefit, perhaps even advancing in rank.

"Beast taming truly has its rewards," Zhao Xing remarked, smiling as he watched Ao Tian make a ceremonial bow before the shrine.

Because of the prestige associated with the Ancient Dragon Court, many beast tamers had achieved wealth and status through these competitions.

Since the founding era of the Great Ancestor, these grand events had been held once every hundred years, creating around three or four hundred success stories of tamers rising to prominence.

Many tamers themselves held only sixth-rank titles, yet the beasts they cultivated were as strong as fourth-ranked creatures. The entire purpose of beast taming was to rear beasts that surpassed the tamer in strength—otherwise, why bother taming at all?

If a tamed beast achieved high rankings and brought back treasures from the Ancient Dragon Court, it would be recognized as a contribution to the dynasty.

In such cases, even the lowest-ranking tamers could see their ranks elevated to fifth or even, in rare instances, third rank. Historical records even mention beasts being granted noble titles in recognition of their merit.

"Ao Tian, work hard for the next few years."

"Whether we rise to glory or not depends entirely on you now," Zhao Xing teased.

"If you manage to return from the Ancient Dragon Court with some great treasures, I might even reach third rank!"

"Meow!" Ao Tian responded with a nod of determination.

Following the ceremony, Sun Shizhao and the other officials—Tao Anchun, Cao Jiang, and Dong Yuanqiu—gathered around, congratulating Zhao Xing. Emotions ran high among the group.

Due to the former supervisor's failures, Twin Island had long been overlooked in the preselection rounds, and its officials had often felt embarrassed when interacting with others. Now, even if their entry was due to some behind-the-scenes arrangements, they still felt a renewed sense of pride.

"Lord Zhao, I'll be in charge of Twin Island's Dragon Horse Directorate in your absence. Rest assured, I'll watch over it carefully," Sun Shizhao assured him.

Since Zhao Xing would be heading to the Purple Cloud Archipelago, he had to bring along officials like Dong Yuanqiu and Tao Anchun.

Participating in the competition wasn't as simple as attending alone; the entire support team—including officials from the Divine Feed Office, the Chenghua Directorate, and veterinary experts from Tuoquan Palace—needed to accompany him.

Beast care, feeding, injury treatment, and recovery all required their personnel.

Although Zhao Xing had his myriad body technique, allowing him to split his attention, his real self would still have to be present to ensure proper supervision, especially since he'd be the sole beast tamer in the competition.

"Rest assured, Marquis Yuanrang," Sun Shizhao replied. "If anything is amiss with the Dragon Horse Directorate, you can hold me accountable."

Zhao Xing returned the bow, fully trusting Sun Shizhao, who had sworn to safeguard the Directorate with his reputation.

"The day-to-day tasks will fall to Bao Shi Qiu, and Ling Ruoxue, you're to assist him as necessary."

"Yes, Lord Zhao."

On December 1st, Zhao Xing, accompanied by his Mountain Cat, Tiger Jiao, and Azure Luan, along with the officers from Twin Island's Dragon Horse Directorate, set out on the Cloud Rain Tower ship toward the Purple Cloud Archipelago's arena.

By the morning of December 2nd, they arrived at the arena.
