"Eat slowly," he said softly, reaching forward to steady her plate when it nearly slid. "You didn't even know you were hungry, hmm?"
Lilith only made a small "hmph" in her throat, pretending to be annoyed but her lips curved into the smallest real smile.
Gray cut a neat piece of cake for her next, the silver fork tapping against the plate. He placed it carefully on her side of the table, nudging it closer with his fingertips.
"Try this," he said, voice gentle. "You'll like it."
Lilith leaned in, biting into the soft cake. A faint sweetness spread on her tongue, and she closed her eyes for half a second — just enough for him to catch that rare, unguarded expression on her face. When she opened them, she found Gray staring at her, not at her eyes but lower.
"What?" she asked, blinking. But she caught the tiny flicker in his eyes and felt a spot of warmth at the corner of her mouth.
