Chapter 21 - DW: The Mechanic Chapter 18

It does not take long for my TARDIS to arrive at a destination and begin rematerialisation. Once the landing is done, I start to run some tests using the ship's sensors to see if the atmosphere outside has breathable air or not.

After I can firm it is, I look at the screen on the console, activating the viewer that will give me an image of what's outside. Not long later, an image of a hallway shows on the monitor, the walls look to be made of pure metal.

After knowing it's safe to go I I walk to the door, opening it, and walking out while looking around the hallway to see if I can see anyone. Once outside my TARDIS, I close the door and then start walking down the hallway. As I walk, I notice strange lumps that resemble the slimes you see in fantasy RPG games.

I avoid going near them, unsure of what they are, not even my Time Lord knowledge has anything about them. Not long later, I reach a door that I proceed to enter. The room inside is massive, not only that, there are actual people, but they seem anxious about something.

Noticing me, one of the women approaches me," Who are you? How did you get here? I thought the company put this facility on lockdown after the slime showed up" I look at her before speaking" I am a traveller, I just happened to end up here, you mentioned the slimes, what are they?".

Hearing my words, she perks up, "Can you get us out of here?" I look around as she says that to see everyone perk up at the question. She than realizes that she has not answered my question and speaks" as for the slimes they just appeared one day, during the times when the sun hits the facility the go into the forms they are currently, but when the sun is obstructed they take the shape of a slime man or woman, but that's not the worst part anyone they touch has there life drained till all that's left is a husk".

Hearing this, I think about the hallway that leads to my TARDIS, while I was thinking, a voice comes out of the speakers in the room " sun Obstruction imminent repeat sun obstruction imminent "hearing this, everyone in the room starts to quickly pack back up and head to the door on the opposite side of the room that I entered.

As I look at the woman who came to speak, she motions for me to follow her. Complying, I follow behind through the same door that everyone else left the large room through. As I enter the door, I am greeted with a hallway, however, this one seems like it has been reinforced. The hallway has a large number of reinforced doors.

The woman whose name I have yet to ask motions for me to enter one of the rooms behind one of the reinforced doors, understanding what they are for, I walk to the one closed to me before entering, inside there's a basic assortment of stuff that you would find in a prison cell, a bed and a toilet. The only non-normal thing is the desk with a computer, which looks to have been added more recently.

"Why would they need prison cells? Something's not adding up" My words are not heard by anyone. As I finish my thoughts, the door shuts, locking, probably to keep the slimes out, and just as I thought that, the door to the large room opens, and slime men and women come into the hallway. my issue is that I have limited vision through the small window in the door.

What's more surprising is that despite my cell being the closest to the door, they walk right past me, heading directly toward the ones with the people from this facility. it makes me think why ignore me, could it be that I am missing something?

Looking at the computer, I think I should see if I can access anything to see what really happened here. Moving toward the desk, I look at the computer monitor, which looks like I need a login. Taking my sonic wrench from my waist, I point it at the computer to see if it can find a way to bypass the password lock. Luckily for me, it's not deadlocked, and I was able to bypass the password. Looking through the files on the computer, my face goes pale at what I find.

The slimes did not appear, they were made using actual people, some sick attempt at making super soldiers. They took orphans, brought them here and experimented on them. what's even worse is that this place is a station that is hidden in the asteroid belt at the edge of the solar system; no one can save them.

They became slimes because humanity had found a strange substance that could regenerate skin when applied externally. Some executives of the company Dark Biotech wanted to see if they could combine it with other medical chemicals and inject them directly into the heart, to figure out if it could make soldiers who are stronger, faster and more durable.

The files show that animal testing when fine, but the moment they started human trials, everything that could go wrong did; the subjects died, but not long later, the dead bodies started to convert into slime. Leading to the creation of the slimes out there who have been hunting the people on this station.

"Wait, that's it, they are hunting those that did this to them, which means they retain the resentment of when they were human, maybe if they either let go of that or finish their revenge the slimes will die" its possible but that leads me to a dilemma, the Doctor would try to convince the slimes to forgive the people that made them but everything inside me tells me to let them finish there revenge.

I think I understand why I need a companion like the Doctor; having a human perspective on this helps, I suppose, but for now, what do I do? Save the unethical scientist or let their creation enact their revenge. For now, I need to communicate to see if they can talk or are just mindless.

Walking to the doo I point my wrench at it, once the door unlocks the slimes turn to my door that by this point is open and walked out" I know what they did to you, I understand you want revenge" hearing my word all the slimes in the room stop and turn to me there largest of them speaks" you do not know, the pain it hurt, so much pain".

"I know what it's like to be trapped against your will to be used by others, my gifts made me valuable to those above me, so I understand having no freedom, but the experiments you went through, I can't understand, but I know they were wrong. no one deserves to be used like that".

Since they have some intelligence, I think they should not sully their hands any more than they already have. They were children, for god sake, they should have been playing and enjoying themselves, not strapped to a table being experimented on. I hold a part in the death of my own kind, I should at least handle this burden for them.

With my mind made up, I speak," they will die, but not by your hands, none of you deserve this fate, the burden, let someone who already shoulders the burden do the rest, this I swear to you, they, and this station with all the records contained with in will cease to be" after I finish I point my wrench at a terminal that next to my door, using it to engage the lockdown of the cells.

As all the cells completely lock the people inside are banging on the doors after hearing what I said," you can't do this" I look at the woman I met on my arrival with disgust through he small window of her cell.

" I can and will, you used children for god sake, that's just wrong on so many levels, they deserve better. You, on the other hand, deserve a death that will leave a warning to any who attempt the same" I was struggling to hold back my rage.

The biggest slime, the one who spoke before, who I assume is the leader, speaks once more," Thank you, we will watch over them while you destroy this place and set us free" hearing I start sprinting down the hallway through the door to the large room and through a few more doors and always till I find myself in the control room.

Looking through the console, I find the self-destruct, pointing my wrench at it and activating the sonic, I initiate the self-destruct. Once I confirm it started, I bolt out of the control room heading straight for my TARDIS.

Going through the hallways and rooms, making my way to my TARDIS, I can hear the ominous countdown to self-destruct. It took me quite a bit of time to get back to the point I was at the last ten seconds before the station explodes.

Rushing over to the control console, I initiate the dematerialisation of my TARDIS. Making it reappear at a safe distance from the station as the whole thing explodes. Even seeing the station explode does not quell the anger at what he saw in those files, making a note to make sure that the company responsible, Dark Biotech, will suffer for authorising the experiments.

As if to sense my rage, Ada tries to communicate with me," It's gone now, all those who suffered have been set free, let's focus on the positives, it's over, the children can rest in peace now that those who experimented on them are gone" I take a deep breath at her words, before exhaling letting go of my anger.

I engage the auto flight system with instructions to find somewhere remote before heading to my room for some much-needed rest. Once I arrive in my room, I take no time to look around, heading straight to my bed and flopping onto it before shortly after succumbing to sleep, thinking, hoping I do not have to look at files like the ones from the station ever again.
