Chapter 16 - Below The Surface

"You are so close, oh yes..." whispered the voice.

"Much to learn, much to take in—could you handle it? The nightmare is just beginning..." A high-pitched giggle echoed and faded into the endless darkness.

***

I opened my eyes. I was still alive. I'm still alive!

I got up from the floor. A tremendous pain throbbed in my head, and a million needles stabbed my back. My vision slowly improved as I blinked multiple times, getting rid of the watery effect. Probably tears of agony. The familiar buzzing noise of the security office soon took over as my hearing improved. I limped my way to the security chair, wincing in pain with every step I took. I sat down, taking a minute to rest. What happened? I thought Foxy was going to kill me? Maybe I was wrong.

I grabbed the security tablet in front of me. It displayed Foxy's cove still. Foxy remained where he was—just like before the hallucination. It was as if he never ran once. Was it another hallucination? It felt so real, though. Too real. I checked the power percentage and time. I had 10 percent left, and it was 4:50 AM. Not good.

How am I going to survive another hour without power?

Ah ha ha ha... ha ha...

Freddy laughed tauntingly, reminding me that I would soon hear his song again. I need to figure out a way to exit safely when the power eventually runs out. The sooner, the better. At that moment, I recalled the flashlight I had packed the previous night. I felt around my security vest until I felt an area with a bulge. Predicting it was my flashlight, I opened my vest pocket and felt around. I located the flashlight and pulled it out. Thank god I took some spare batteries with me. The charge should last more than an hour.

I looked at the power percentage again. The power was at 5%. The time was 4:55. 5 more minutes until the power goes out.

4% -- 4:56 AM.

3% -- 4:57 AM.

2% -- 4:58 AM.

1% -- 4:59 AM.

0% -- 5:00 AM.

The office that once buzzed with life suddenly fell silent. The lights dimmed, and darkness consumed the room swiftly. I sat in the dark, occupied with nothing but my thoughts. Freddy's footsteps slowly approached the office. That's when I made my move. Before Freddy played his captivating lullaby, I ran out the right hallway. I turned on my flashlight to prevent myself from accidentally tripping. Luckily, there weren't any animatronics there. I eventually made it to the end of the hallway, connecting to the dining room. Chica and Bonnie were in their places near the party tables—but that didn't stop me.

I went around the animatronics and ran straight for the backstage room. I figured I could go in there and lock the door behind me. That should give me a bit more time, right? I burst open the door and shut it behind me, locking it in the process. Sighing with relief, I slumped against the cold, metal door of the backstage room. I wonder where the generator is—maybe I could turn the power back on. I got up and turned my flashlight back on. Initially, I jumped when I saw all the animatronic heads appearing before me, but then I calmed down. In addition to the animatronic heads, there was a vast array of spare parts, including animatronic eyes and hands. The owners were ready for anything.

I slowly swiped my flashlight across the room, looking for anything that resembled a generator of some sort. I found nothing. Which is odd because there usually is a generator, and you'd think the backstage area would have it. Another thing that was odd was the fact the exoskeleton from previous nights was missing. I don't recall seeing the exoskeleton when I was reviewing the camera footage. This raised a big concern for me—where could it have gone? I dismissed the thought of it. I needed to focus on turning the power back on if possible.

Instead of looking at ground level, I searched the ceiling and walls to see if there were any wires that could lead to a power supply. Typically, if my assumption was correct, there were wires nearby. How else were the cameras and lights powered? I quickly answered my question after discovering plastic hard covers on the ceiling that looked like they contained electrical wires. I followed the plastic covers until they stopped behind a tile wall. It appeared that the wires ended there, making it impossible to access them any further. I further investigated the plastic covers and discovered that most of them ended in a common location.

Behind the wall.

This was weird because there was no door, no basement cover, or anything. Is the power supply self-sufficient, or is it located outside? If the power supply were outside, then it would be impossible to restore power until the night was over. Unless... It's a secret door. I inspected the wall deeply. I pushed against the square tiles of the wall and felt around for some secret trigger, but nothing happened despite my efforts. Maybe I was overthinking it. There's no such thing as secret doors—stupid things like that only existed in fiction. I lowered my flashlight and sighed in defeat. That's when something shiny caught my eye. I faced my flashlight in the direction of the shiny material. It was coming from an animatronic head—specifically, Chica's. I pried open the head, revealing what looked to be a remote.

The remote contained two buttons, but I had no idea what they did. Maybe this will open the wall? I pushed the top button—nothing happened. Maybe the bottom one? I pushed the bottom button, but nothing happened. I scoffed in disappointment. Why create two buttons if they are just going to be useless? Immediately, a beeping sound played. A loud, mechanical whirr emitted from the door, prompting the tile wall upwards. Behind the wall were wooden stairs that led to a metal door at the end of it. So, there was a hidden, secret door after all.

I cautiously went down the creaky wooden stairs until I reached the metal door at the bottom. It squealed loudly as I pushed it open. The sharp, metallic scent of iron instantly washed over me. I waved my flashlight across the spacious basement. Completed animatronic suits sat quietly on the floor—likely the cause of the smell. Most of them were Freddy, while others looked outdated or new. Some looked like animals that I haven't seen before. I searched the room, looking for a light switch. However, something on the wall caught my eye: blood.

"Oh no..." I whispered.

It was everywhere—splattered across the walls. Some were smeared with handprints—signs of struggle. I directed the beam of my flashlight at the animatronic suits to examine them closely. The animatronics had streaks of blood. Blood stained their mouths, chests, and bellies. As each detail revealed itself, my stomach twisted.

"What the fuck?" I muttered. There were human eyes. The eyes stared out of the eye sockets of the animatronic heads. The flashlight slipped from my grasp and hit the floor with a muffled thud. My hands trembled.

Who could do such a thing?

I dropped to my knees, grabbing the flashlight. It felt sticky and wet when I brought it closer. Then my knees felt cold and wet. I flicked the light toward the ground. It was blood. A wide, sticky pool of it covered the black and white tile, soaking into my pants.

I scrambled to my feet, backing into the wall behind me. I wanted to scream. I needed to scream. But nothing came out. My head felt dizzy. I felt like throwing up. To my right, I noticed a light switch. I hesitated, then something compelled me to flip it on. The rest of the room lit up.

That's when everything was clear.

This wasn't just a killing.

This was a massacre.

I had to get out. I had to call the police. I quickly turned to leave, but I heard a faint knocking sound. I snapped my head toward the noise. There was another door. The knocking sound played again--This time louder. A weak moan echoed from the other side.

Like a human moan.

I rushed to the door. Maybe someone was still alive. Maybe I could save them! I burst open the door. There was nobody. Instead, an animatronic sat on a metal table. It was a Golden Freddy suit, to be exact. The head slowly lifted, facing me. Human eyes stretched out of the eye sockets, still clinging to strands of sinew. Suddenly, the Golden Freddy suit opened its belly compartment, revealing a ribcage with some human remains still attached. Human guts hung from the bottom, dripping blood on the floor.

I couldn't handle it anymore. The rotten stench of human remains forced me to throw up profusely. I started hyperventilating out of fear. Disgust. The Golden Freddy suit moved again and began playing glitchy, garbled-up words. It was incomprehensible, but I tried to listen to it as best as I could.

"M-maybe... s-s-sometime, y-y... YOU could—chk—inside... those s-suits... b-backroom... Gonna hold out—OUT! I-it won't b..szzzzz... BAD. Wondered. empty heads."

Suddenly, the dialogue cut out. It sounded like it was the phone guy that was speaking. Was it him?

Immediately, Freddy's lullaby began playing.

It couldn't be. This Golden Freddy... It's the Phone Guy

Freddy's lullaby abruptly stopped mid-chorus. The Golden Freddy's belly closed, and its head slumped forward, indicating that it had deactivated.

"Welcome to the aftershow."

I jerked my head towards the voice behind me. It was William Afton.
