Chapter 316 - Chapter 316: Colossus vs. Colossus — A Battle of Titans (Bonus Chapter 1)

Boom! Boom!

Amidst the tremors that shook the ground, a colossal beast, spider-like with four legs, was seen wandering through the metallic forest near an active volcano. Its head was flat and elongated, with blood-red eyes that glowed ominously, and its rear head was covered with numerous compound eyes, allowing it a 360-degree view.

The beast's body was covered in sharp, bristly "fur," and at the end of its body was a closed "orifice," possibly used to shoot web-like threads or some other unknown function.

Above this behemoth circled several local creatures with tough skin like that of pterosaurs, flapping their wings and emitting loud roars, expressing their displeasure or perhaps conveying a message to others. Yet, despite their wingspans exceeding fifteen meters, these creatures appeared minuscule in comparison to the enormous beast, which stood over a hundred meters tall on all fours, not to mention the size of its main body and other features.

Suddenly, the beast let out a low, hissing sound. Raising its head slightly, it fixated its crimson eyes on the creatures circling overhead. With a sudden, explosive whoosh, it launched numerous bristly "fur" projectiles, creating a barrage that resembled a close-in weapon system, effortlessly swatting down the troublesome creatures.

The metallic bristles, shot at supersonic speeds, struck the creatures, sparking flashes as they made contact, akin to the clash of steel. This scene showed how life on Earth had adapted to the planet's harsh, mutated environment, evolving into stronger, more resilient, and stranger forms.

In just a few moments, the beast had dispatched the entire swarm of pterosaur-like creatures with its endless bristle barrage.

Feeling triumphant, the beast emitted another low hiss, this time seemingly content, and then shifted its massive form, moving towards the magma lake at the volcano's peak. It seemed intent on taking a "hot bath" to recharge itself with heat and absorb radioactive materials from the Earth's crust.

However, as it began to ascend, it suddenly stopped halfway up. Its rear compound eyes seemed to detect something approaching at high speed. Immediately, it raised its body, opened the slit at its tail, and aimed towards the southern sky.

The slit on its tail began to emit a glow, much like the charging sequence of a shipborne electromagnetic cannon, but rather than blue, this light was an intense crimson.

With a mighty discharge, a red plasma-like projectile shot across the sky, hurtling southward. But as it waited, there was no explosion, no satisfying sound of impact, which meant… it missed? The beast paused, puzzled, before adjusting its angle and firing again, repeatedly unleashing crimson plasma projectiles toward the south.

Finally, with a relentless barrage, an explosion erupted in the southern sky, about twenty kilometers from its location. Triumphant, the beast let out a pleased growl and turned back toward the volcanic lake.

Yet, just as it was about to resume its journey, it was struck by a blue-glowing 1200mm Gauss spike cannon round and a large-caliber plasma projectile. Explosions tore through the volcanic slopes, and the beast roared in pain, its anguished cries echoing throughout the region.

As the smoke and dust cleared, a faint force field could be seen surrounding the beast, shielding its exterior from significant damage, though the bombardment had inflicted serious internal injuries. Orange, fluorescent blood trickled from its eyes and compound eyes.

Realizing that its attackers were not mere nuisances but beings with power rivaling Earth's current apex species, the beast steadied itself and cast its gaze twenty kilometers southward.

There, it saw four humanoid mechs rapidly closing in, using the previous barrage as cover to narrow the distance between them and the beast, to just three or four kilometers.

The beast quickly crouched low, positioning its back towards the mechs as they approached.

With a sonic boom, it launched another dense barrage of bristly projectiles. However, the projectiles clashed harmlessly against a green energy shield, deflecting every shot without the mechs even flinching. This shield was powered by Reaper civilization technology, modified and enhanced by the Atlas research team with elements from the Forerunner civilization, providing the Titan mechs with starship-grade defense.

Three Titans hovered a thousand meters above ground, using their anti-gravity engines to maintain a steady position. They wielded 1200mm Gauss cannons and aimed at the beast below, plasma cannons on their shoulders fully charged and ready to unleash another barrage. Yet, they held their fire, maintaining a cautious stance.

One of the Titans, with the emblem "Spring-One" on its right shoulder plate, descended towards the beast. This Titan was piloted by Quán Líng. Her awareness focused through the Titan's view, and a voice came through her comms:

"Colonel Quan, based on the earlier engagement, we've determined that this local beast has a considerable radiation level. The plasma-like projectiles it fires seem to be fueled by some internal biotic radiation. Its force field likely originates from charged cells or perhaps another form of radiating biomass. Either way, we need a sample to confirm."

"I understand," Quán Líng replied, cutting off further analysis from her colleague Wang Jie. She maneuvered her Titan through the barrage to a close position before stowing the Gauss cannon on its back and drawing a massive power sword from the mech's frame.

The Titan's plasma field activated around the sword's blade, creating an intense energy charge. This powered sword was based on the Astartes prototype power weapons, optimized for heavy, single-combat engagements.

Quán Líng focused, aiming to pierce the creature's hide. She urged her Titan forward, signaling Wang Jie: "Prepare to collect data!"

"Roger!" came the reply. Concentrating, she closed the distance, leaped, and drove the power sword toward the creature's back.

The plasma field clashed violently against the beast's force field, creating a massive shockwave that rattled the ground. The sword failed to pierce on the first strike. Quán Líng quickly withdrew, stabilizing her stance as the beast lurched forward, attempting to crush her with its sheer weight. She dodged, sidestepping the attack just in time.

Taking Wang Jie's advice, Quán Líng adjusted her next swing, slowing her blade below 120 km/h to slip past the force field's activation threshold. The sword sank deep, piercing the beast's hide.

With a final, precise strike, she gutted the beast, spilling fluorescent orange blood across the ground. The massive creature shuddered in its death throes, unable to retaliate as its life force drained away, pinned by the Titan's unyielding grip.

After ensuring it was dead, Quán Líng sheathed the power sword and directed, "Let's have personnel from Bio Division collect samples here. Titan Unit Four will remain on-site for protection." As she ascended, she glanced at the fallen beast's mutilated remains and said, "Notify the forward base to send the research team."

"Yes, Colonel."

While Titan mechs and allied reconnaissance forces pursued their objectives, four Paris-class frigates had entered low-Earth orbit, taking strategic positions.

"Captain, all systems operational. Six beasts have been detected, but there's no sign of the 'Godzilla' entity mentioned by Intelligence," reported the crew.

An alarm rang out as the radar officer noted a new presence entering Earth's gravitational field—a signal suggesting an unidentified spaceborne craft approaching Earth.
