Chapter 43 - Yellow's End

Leah and Quil met Jared and Paul at the Washington, Canada border.

(Dean still not here?) asked Leah, looking around.

(Not yet,) replied Jared, pawing the ground.

It was another half hour before he showed up.

(What took so long?) asked an annoyed Paul.

(Had to make sure he knew what would happen should he return,) said Dean eerily.

(Riiight... Shall we go now?) asked Jared, a little unnerved, trying not to think of what Dean might have done to Jake.

Sunrise was still a few hours out when they set out, and by midday, they had their first whiff of vampires. A couple of older vamps, taking refuge in a cave on their travels with a young, dead couple at their feet, recently drained.

They were in for quite the shock when a pack of the biggest wolves they'd ever seen barged in and tore them apart.

Such scenes repeated numerous times on their travels, at gas stations, hotels, truck stops, and rest areas, killing every vamp they found.

(Alaska smells nice. It's a big state, though. Do you have any idea where this coven is?) asked Leah, taking in the view.

(Nope, we'll have to search,) said Dean.

(The entire state?) asked Paul unhappily.

(I said it could take a while. We can split up and howl when we find them, Leah and I will go this way,) said Dean, randomly picking a direction.

It wasn't until the next day that Jared howled for them.

(You found them?) asked Dean, trotting over.

(I think so, there's a coven down in that valley,) Jared indicated with his head.

(Good work, we'll wait till nightfall,) said Dean, peering down.

(Why?) asked Quil, wishing to return and see how Embry was holding up.

(Don't be stupid,) said Paul.

(Oh, right,) said Quil, (But we've been killing every stray vamp we've found without worrying about that.)

(That's fine, I don't expect you to drag everything to me like some servant, though I would prefer if you at least saved the gifted ones if you managed to find any, they provide much more than any regular vamps,) said Dean.

(We'll try and keep that in mind,) said Paul unconvincingly.

(How strong are you now?) Jared asked curiously.

Dean grinned, (Strong.)

Leah snorted, picturing him as a caveman, 'Me strong, me like woman,' then forcibly dragging her away to have his way with her, sending a spike of arousal through her at the thought. She quickly shook her head, purging the images from her mind, sending a look around worriedly if anyone noticed.

At Nightfall, they descended the mountain.

(I saw a couple leave, not sure how many are left inside,) said Jared, falling in behind Dean.

(Should we wait for them?) asked Quil.

(No, let's end this now,) Paul growled, eager to get back home to Rachel.

(I can stand watch and chase them if they flee,) Leah volunteered, hoping they would.

They began to sprint 100 feet away, Dean, Paul, Quil, and Jared each spread out, picking a window or door and smashing their way in, catching the three occupants unawares.

.

The two vampires, Kate and Garrett, who left earlier, found a human to sate his hunger, having struggled to make the change to their diet. They unexpectedly returned to the sounds of their friends fighting for their lives inside.

"Woah," said Garrett, spotting the giant wolf between them and their home.

"Tayna!" cried Kate, rushing forward, only to be caught by her mate.

"Kate! Stop, we don't know how many are in there," said Garrett, eyeing the wolf warily.

"I don't care! Let me go!" she hissed, using her Psychic electrokinesis gift to force him to let go, but surprisingly, despite the immense pain, he held on.

"Kate," he groaned painfully, "Don't," he said through gritted teeth, her hands sending agonizing electrical shocks coursing through him.

With much effort, she finally managed to throw him off and run towards a disappointed Leah, who was itching for another good chase.

Alerting the guys with a bark, she met the vamp's charge head-on.

Kate tried to run past the wolf, wishing to get inside, but Leah wasn't having that, cutting her off at every avenue.

Seeing no other option, Kate went for the wolf with hands outstretched, intending to catch the jaws before they could bite her, and cripple it with her gift.

Clutching the jaws with a grin, victory assured, her eyes widened in disbelief when nothing happened, and the teeth slipped through, tearing at her torso, she screamed.

"No!" Garrett cried, fighting off the last of the pain and rushing to her aid, crashing into the wolf, and pushing it away with all his might.

Smashing into a large tree, Leah yelped as the broken tree fell on top of her, trapping her awkwardly, struggling to get her paws back underneath.

The furious vamp glanced at his mate's mangled body and then started to stalk towards her with fierce determination.

Still pinned beneath the tree, she bared her teeth, snapping and barking at him helplessly.

(Dean!) Leah cried, losing her composure.

Feeling stupid as he stood above her, she shifted back to her human form to free herself as he lifted his foot. Then, the house suddenly burst apart in an explosion of debris as Dean came barreling towards them at an astonishing speed.

Garrett died not even knowing what happened, as one minute he was standing above his foe, ready to end the wolf's life despite it turning into a strikingly exotic female, and the next he was not, as a great big golden beast slammed into him from the side, tearing him in half.

(Thanks, stupid tree messed me up,) said Leah, shifting back.

(It's fine, there were two inside that put up more of a fight than anyone expected, despite losing limbs in the initial surprise attack, they seemed well-trained,) said Dean, biting off the male vamp's head and swallowing it.

(Is it over?) asked Leah.

(Yeah, and we got the right ones, all had yellow eyes, except this fellow, must have been a new member,) said Dean, chewing on an arm.

(Hey, everything cool out here?) asked Jared, strolling out of the house through the massive hole Dean made.

(Yeah, you lot can head back, we're done here,) said Dean, staying behind to finish his meal with Leah waiting patiently nearby.

(Cool, see you at the reserve,) said Paul, taking off.

(Dude,) said Quil, not thinking much of Paul's abrupt exit.
