Chapter 132 - Chapter 132 - The Ties That Bind Us: Revelations, Reunions, and Family Vacation - Part 13

Void Sentinel-Command Deck

Monitoring the operation from the ship, Crescent detected Mother Empress's signal and raised an eyebrow while analyzing the data about the universe Diana's group had visited. Acting swiftly but discreetly, he coordinated with Cyborg on the return sequence, utilizing Mother Empress's backdoor protocols to ensure precise dimensional coordinates—all while keeping the Void Sentinel's true capabilities hidden.

Justice League Forward Base - British Coast

Diana's group materialized through the portal in the captured facility, now under the League's oversight. Diana, Rachel, Kara, Cheetah, Batman, Batgirl, and Flash emerged one by one, each showing visible signs of interdimensional strain.

"Ugh... it stings," Flash muttered, steadying himself against a console.

"Not this again..." Batgirl groaned, temporarily removing her cowl and massaging her temples to ease her discomfort. "But... it isn't as bad."

"Yeah," Cheetah pressed her fingers against her temples. "Still let's not do this again... at least not for a while."

Batman's only response was a characteristic grunt of agreement.

Cyborg powered down the portal systems and turned to face the group. "Welcome back. How was the trip?"

"Good to be back," Diana replied with a calm nod to Cyborg. "The mission was successful, though far more interesting than we anticipated."

Rachel nodded in acknowledgment. "We learned quite a bit."

"More than we expected," Kara added meaningfully.

"I can see it took its toll," Cyborg observed, noting their conditions. "Are the jumps really that rough?"

"Cyborg... returning home feels better, but crossing over initially hit us like a speeding car," Batgirl explained, donning her cowl once more, now fully recovered. "The disorientation was intense. You see, that universe exists in complete isolation from the multiverse. We couldn't have breached it without Mother Empress's help. Thankfully, Wonder Woman and Cheetah knew how to handle the side effects."

"An isolated universe?" Cyborg's interest was clearly piqued. "What kind of technology could create that level of dimensional segregation? Is that universe really that advanced?"

"In some ways, yes, but in many ways our technology surpasses theirs," Batman replied as he straightened up, recovering from the side effects. "Cyborg, what's the situation here? How much time has passed since our departure? Has John faced any problems with authorities over the island?"

Cyborg's expression grew serious. "You've only been gone for about six hours. John's been handling the diplomatic side smoothly, though we've had some... interesting developments."

"Define interesting," Batman pressed, his tone sharp.

"After your departure, elements within the British government continued to contest our presence here," Cyborg explained, his cybernetic eye glowing as he brought up a holographic display showing the pictures of the officials. "They claim the island falls under British jurisdiction, but none have directly challenged the Justice League's authority." He paused, glancing upward. "And with the Saiyan Empire's presence overhead, London's official stance has become notably... diplomatic."

"However," he continued, his tone growing more serious, "we had an incident three hours ago. A team of operatives attempted to infiltrate the island - their equipment and tactics matched MI6. Fortunately, we had a strong defensive perimeter in place. While John together with Superman was handling diplomatic matters at the Hall of Justice, and I monitored the facility for your return signal, our team - Aquaman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Starfire, Blue Beetle, and Beast Boy - intercepted the intruders."

"Let me guess," Batman interjected, his eyes narrowing. "London denies any involvement."

"Precisely," Cyborg confirmed with a slight smirk. "The British government claims no knowledge of the operation. Standard protocol for covert missions gone wrong. But don't worry - we've got everything under control. The situation's contained, and our position here remains secure. So yeah, overall interesting and eventful, but nothing that we can't handle."

"I can use my Lasso of Truth if necessary," Diana said, turning to look at Batman. "Just let me know."

Batman nodded, reaching for his belt buckle to activate a compact mobile computer through which he summoned the Batwing to his location.

"Six hours here..." Batgirl mused thoughtfully. "Yet we spent nearly a day on the other side."

"The time discrepancy could be due to the universe's isolation, or there might be inherent temporal differences between universes in this lower realm," Rachel added thoughtfully.

"Man, we're essentially entering into uncharted physics here," Batgirl commented. "We need some sharper minds to provide us with answers."

"I agree,"nodded Rachel. "But, the temporal mechanics would be interesting to research."

Kara rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Seriously? You're planning research when we just got back? Come on, that can wait. Let's relax after the battle we've been through. Rachel, what about that boutique you mentioned? Barbara, you in?" She glanced between her friends with a hopeful smile, trying to coax them into taking a break and have some fun.

As the younger heroes discussed their plans, Diana and Cheetah moved to a quieter corner of the room. Cheetah watched Rachel with a slight smile crossing her arms, "That girl of yours is something else. Already thinking about delving into research."

Diana chuckled. "Yes. In fact, Orach and I have decided to make full use of her remaining vacation time to explore the ruins and sites we discussed. She's eager to learn about her mother's work. I couldn't be prouder."

"I was hoping we could explore those sites together," Cheetah admitted. "But I understand. Keep me updated"

"Of course," Diana assured her. "Besides, we can always organize proper expeditions later. This time is for her to relax and have some fun. Who knows? We might discover something that leads to future adventures for all of us."

Cheetah managed a small smile, but her gaze drifted to Batman, her expression clouding with worry and uncertainty. Diana, noticing the shift, placed a gentle hand on her friend's shoulder. "You're worried about the boy, aren't you?"

Cheetah's shoulders trembled slightly, her head bowing as she searched for words. "How can I not be, Di? Bruce and I... we've finally reached a good place. After Orach's gift—his parents' last words—he's felt lighter and opened up to me in ways I never imagined possible. But now..." She took a shaky breath. "After what we learned about that other reality... if Talia has his child in this world too..."

She drew in a deep breath before continuing, "What terrifies me most is the choice he might have to make. Would he feel obligated to give the boy a complete family with her? And even if he stays with me and we find the child... taking him from his mother..." Her voice cracked. "No matter what we decide, that woman will fight us to the end. And Di... if it comes to that, I know exactly what I'm capable of. Even though I would love that boy as my own and give him everything I have, how could I ever look him in the eyes knowing I'd killed his mother?"

Cheetah's voice softened to barely a whisper. "Bruce accepted all of me, Di. Even the broken parts. And I love him - God help me, I love him so much. He hasn't said it yet, but I can see it in his eyes when he looks at me. The thought of losing him now..."

Diana's expression grew serious as she squeezed her friend's shoulder. "Listen to me. First, you need to talk to him. Your relationship is built on honesty - use that foundation. Share these fears with him."

"And about the boy..." Diana continued thoughtfully. "There's no way Bruce didn't notice it—that child had taken lives. That wouldn't have happened under Bruce's care at Wayne Manor. He was clearly trained as an assassin by the League of Shadows from an early age. While I can't fully justify separating a child from his mother, you would give him something Talia never could—real love, guidance, and protection." Letting go, Diana looked straight at her friend and spoke in a resolute tone, "Whatever we discover about this reality, whatever path you choose to take, I will stand with you. We all will."

Cheetah wiped at her eyes, managing a weak smile. "If we had Wonder Woman, the future mistress of the House of Gula involved, that would definitely be overkill," she said with a slight chuckle, attempting to lighten the mood. Her expression softened as she looked at her friend. "Thank you, Di. For everything."

She turned towards Batman, her eyes filled with newfound determination. Her voice was steady when she spoke, "I know what I need to do now."

"Good," Diana replied warmly. She glanced at the others before saying, "Now, we should join the others—the League will want our report." She paused, then added softly, "And afterwards, you and Bruce should spend some time together. Have that talk."

Cheetah took a deep breath to steady herself, straightening her shoulders. "Let's go," she said as they moved to rejoin the group.

Soon, the heroes gathered for a conference call in the facility, with the rest of the Justice League and Teen Titans joining remotely to share their findings. After Batman and Diana shared their data, Cyborg projected images and information from their travels. As the teams detailed the state of the alternate universe—from widespread distrust of heroes to the imprisonment of depowered individuals and the corruption of Superman's son—a heavy silence fell over the group. Superman's expression, in particular, grew increasingly troubled.

"Amanda Waller's fear of us..." Martian Manhunter said softly, his brow furrowed in concern. "I never imagined it would lead to such extremes."

"What they did was beyond inhumane," Black Canary said through gritted teeth, her hands clenched into fists. "In their eyes, we're not even human beings anymore - just threats to be contained."

Green Arrow leaned forward, his expression grim. "The scope of this operation is what truly disturbs me. The level of planning, the resources required... this wasn't some hasty reaction. This was calculated."

"There is also the technology behind the operation. It goes far beyond what that world should be capable of," added Flash.

"What are you thinking, Barry?" Aquaman asked, noting the speedster's troubled expression.

"The technology in that world largely mirrors our own, but the physics underlying Waller's systems operates far beyond our current capabilities," Flash gestured at the equipment around them. "Take this facility, for instance, it runs decades ahead of our present technology. Most of our world still considers stable interdimensional portals purely theoretical—even my team needed Earth-2's help to achieve it." He paused, his expression thoughtful. "I suspect Waller either got help or followed the same approach as this facility's builders. Instead of developing the technology herself, she likely after gaining access to a rudimentary means of travel, gathered advanced systems from multiple universes. By combining these different technologies, she created the infrastructure needed to isolate and control her entire reality."

"Which suggests the group behind this facility might have contacts with or knowledge of other realities that developed this technology," Martian Manhunter added thoughtfully. "We need to investigate their travels and sources."

"We have an even more pressing concern," Batman interjected gravely. "If Waller achieved this level of control in that universe, our Waller—or others—might attempt the same here. The power to manipulate entire universes is too dangerous to be in anyone's hands." He turned to Diana, his expression grim. "Even if the Injustice League has fled to another universe, what's to prevent them from returning?"

"But we've secured this facility," Aquaman countered. "And the portal requires authorization from Diana or Rachel to function. Without that, it's just a useless piece of metal. Isn't that enough?"

"It's not that simple," Batman said, shaking his head. "What's stopping them from arriving at a different location from the other side? And the data we recovered from their attempted purge only gives us a few of their names. We can be on the lookout for them, but what about the rest? There are still too many unknown variables here."

"Which brings us to our next steps," Cyborg stated firmly. "We need to establish protocols for multiversal travel and monitoring. With facilities like this potentially scattered across our world, we need to be prepared, not caught off guard."

"I can ask Orach to scan Earth for similar signatures," Diana offered. "His ship's initial scan discovered this island — he may have already detected other such locations if they really do exist."

"That would be great, Wonder Woman," Cyborg nodded. "With his advanced scanning capabilities, we could prevent surprise breaches while we develop our own tracking systems. I'll analyze the data you and Batman shared to understand this facility's purpose and trace the universes they accessed. If these criminals are threatening other realities, we may need to intervene before they either cause irreparable damage or return stronger than before."

"Let my team assist with the technical analysis," Flash offered. "Our experience with multiversal travel might help us decode how this facility works faster."

"Perfect," Cyborg replied, nodding at Flash. "Your and your team's expertise with the Speed Force and multiverse travel will be crucial here."

Black Canary leaned forward, her expression grave. "Cyborg is right. If criminals from our universe are wreaking havoc across other dimensions, we have a responsibility to stop them."

"Hold on," Green Arrow interjected from beside Black Canary, raising his hand. Seeing Dinah's stern gaze land on him as she turned, he faltered—but after brief consideration, his expression hardened. Accepting he'd face her wrath at home later, he pressed on, "Look, since these individuals vanished, organized crime worldwide has been in disarray, which proves they were major players. Their criminal empires are crumbling. While I agree we should pursue those who escaped to other universes, shouldn't we focus first on destroying what's left of their operations here, before their lieutenants have a chance to regroup?"

"Agreed," Batman said, his tone measured. "Green Arrow raises a valid point. While we need to track those who fled to other universes, our immediate focus should be preventing their remaining networks from regaining power here. We can't ignore the threat in our own backyard—we'd be helping no one that way."

Superman, who had been listening carefully, turned to Cyborg. "Did you find Luthor's name in the recovered profile data?"

"No," Cyborg replied, "but our data is incomplete."

"What's on your mind?" Batman asked turning to Superman.

"He's been quiet… unusually quiet lately," Superman said. "I can't even scan his facilities anymore because of the lead lining he's added to those buildings. Makes me wonder..."

"You may have a point," Batman said, eyes narrowing. "Given Luthor's intellect, resources, and his vendetta against you, not to mention those losses to Orach... his involvement wouldn't surprise me. But for now, it's just speculation. Nothing's changed in his operations except his public absence. Still," he turned to the screen displaying the Teen Titans. "Titans, keep watch for any suspicious activity. Cyborg will support you as needed."

"His security firewalls are formidable, but I'll do my best," Cyborg promised.

"Understood, Batman," Nightwing added. "I'll coordinate surveillance. If we spot an opening, Beast Boy can infiltrate discreetly—his morphing abilities make him perfect for this mission."

"No unnecessary risks," Batman said firmly, his gaze fixed on Nightwing.

Nightwing's expression turned solemn. "You taught me better than that, Batman. I know not to underestimate Luthor."

Batman gave a simple nod. A tense silence filled the room, highlighting the slight unspoken friction between mentor and former protégé.

Superman cleared his throat, breaking the tension. "Keep me informed." He turned to Supergirl and gestured toward the projected image of Brainiac Queen. "Tell me about your encounter with this Brainiac. What's your assessment of it?"

"I wish I could say it was easy, but it wasn't," Supergirl said gravely. "Even though I overpowered it, this Brainiac adapted rapidly. Despite my enhanced abilities, training, and this suit, one careless moment almost proved fatal. If my suit hadn't protected me, I could have ended up like him." She gestured to the hologram of Superboy. "Like your counterpart's son from that other universe."

Superman's expression darkened as he studied the projections, particularly of Jon Kent under Brainiac Queen's control. After a moment, he turned to Kara and said, "I understand. This means our universe's Brainiac poses a significant threat." He faced Cyborg and continued, "I'll send you all the data from the Fortress about our Brainiac. Everyone on the team needs to be prepared—our version could prove even more dangerous."

"I'll add it to the League database right away," Cyborg confirmed.

Superman acknowledged with a nod and addressed the League. "There's one final matter we need to discuss," he said, his gaze fixed on Batman. "Amanda Waller. What we've witnessed in that other universe—we can't allow her to amass that kind of power here."

"Agreed," Batman said gravely. "I've warned her before. Next time, at the first sign of trouble, we move as one."

"Count me in," Black Canary said, her voice cold.

Thud

A loud thud echoed as Aquaman struck his trident against the floor. "While eliminating her now would be simpler, it would only validate the public's fears about us. But when she crosses the line - and she will - I stand with you all."

The other League members voiced their agreement, a unified front against a common threat.

"One more matter to consider," Martian Manhunter gestured toward the holographic image of heroes gathered on Themyscira. "Perhaps this glimpse of our future should guide our present actions," he observed. "If this many heroes are destined to rise, we should begin preparing the League for expansion. Our charter may need revision to accommodate a new generation."

"We should consider expanding carefully," Batman cautioned. "More members means more coordination needed, more potential security risks."

"But also more coverage," Superman countered. "With our numbers down after losing our Green Lanterns and with threats emerging across our universe and potentially multiple universes now, we need the manpower."

"I agree with both points," Wonder Woman said. "Perhaps we should establish a tiered system - full members, probationary members, and associates. That way we can gradually integrate new heroes while maintaining our standards."

"And mentorship programs," Black Canary added. "Many of these future heroes will be young, inexperienced. They'll need guidance."

"The Titans program has proven successful in that regard," Nightwing offered. "We could use it as a model."

"Then let's form a committee to draft expansion protocols," Superman suggested. "Batman, Wonder Woman, Black Canary - would you three take the lead on this?"

While Black Canary nodded in agreement, Batman and Diana exchanged glances before falling silent.

Diana spoke first, her voice carrying both resolve and regret. "I must decline. There are responsibilities I need to attend to, and for the foreseeable future, I'll be taking a more passive role in the League. I'll still deploy when needed." She turned to face the screen showing Wonder Girl, her expression softening. "But I would like to recommend Wonder Girl. Sister, you've proven yourself and grown during my absences. I trust you'll excel in this role. Will you accept?"

Wonder Girl straightened, her posture reflecting the weight of the responsibility being offered. "I accept, sister. You have my word - I won't disappoint you."

Diana's face lit up with a proud smile as she settled back in her chair. Before the moment could linger, Batman cleared his throat.

"I too must decline," he stated matter-of-factly. "Like Wonder Woman, Cheetah and I have pressing matters that require our attention, and as such, we too will take a step back for a while." He turned to Cyborg, his expression unchanging. "I recommend Cyborg for this position." Beside him, Cheetah nodded in silent agreement.

The room fell into a heavy silence. While most were visibly surprised by both Wonder Woman and Batman stepping back, only Nightwing showed a subtle change in expression as he remained silent.

Superman leaned forward, his face showing both respect for their decision and natural concern.

"I trust your judgment," Superman said carefully, "and I know you can handle whatever challenges you're facing. But I have to ask - do either of you need the League's assistance?"

Diana smiled warmly and replied. "Thank you, Superman. I'll reach out if needed, but for now, no."

"No need," Batman on the other hand replied curtly. Beside him, Cheetah subtly pinched his arm under the table before addressing the group herself.

"What my partner means is," Cheetah added with a diplomatic smile, "we appreciate the offer, but don't foresee needing League intervention. Of course, we'll keep you informed if that changes."

Superman nodded, his expression reflecting his trust in his allies. "Then let's develop our strategy. We'll need to coordinate with local authorities to dismantle these criminal networks effectively."

Over the next hour, the heroes developed their strategic outline for the global response. They established clear roles, Aquaman, Cyborg, and Superman would oversee the island facility, supported by Teen Titans Starfire and Blue Beetle. Martian Manhunter would coordinate from the Hall of Justice with Batgirl's assistance. Field operations would be led by Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Flash, each commanding teams of Teen Titans. After securing UN permissions, these teams would investigate and strategically neutralize remaining criminal networks.

As the meeting concluded, the heroes dispersed to their respective locations. Batman and Cheetah flew to Gotham in the Batwing, while Rachel created portals to transport Batgirl to Jump City and herself with Diana to Azarath.

Azarath

Upon Diana and Rachel's return to their universe, Mother Empress detected their terminals reintegrating, confirming their safe arrival. During their absence, roughly three days had passed in Azarath. Hours after Diana and Rachel's departure from Azarath for their mission, Orach had concluded his discussions with Adirosas and Aurelia, who then ascended to the higher realms to report on his status and life in this lower realm.

Later, for the rest of his time in Azarath, Orach spent meditating and silently cultivating. It was while meditating beneath the heart tree that Orach received Mother Empress's notification of the group's return.

Opening his eyes, Orach rose from his meditation and stepped through a spatial ripple into his newly constructed laboratory. As he took his seat, Mother Empress manifested, her ethereal form connecting with the lab's systems.

"The missions were successful," she began, displaying streams of downloaded data from Diana and Rachel's terminals. "However..." She paused, projecting an image that made Orach's mouth twitch—Rachel's 'Dark Sun' spell raging uncontrollably while recordings played of Diana and Cheetah's conversation before Diana contained the spell.

"Rachel... why?" Orach slumped into his chair, running a hand through his hair. After a moment, he straightened. "Mother Empress, pull up your research on dating - I'll need options for coaxing Diana later. And restrict Rachel's access to the magic section of the archives until her grounding is over." Despite his words, a proud smile crept onto his face as he rewatched the replay of Rachel's spell. "That's my girl. Already mastering higher realm spells."

"Young Master, she has indeed made remarkable progress," Mother Empress agreed, though her tone grew concerned. "However, Diana raises valid points. While the princess grows stronger, perhaps this pace is too rushed. A period of restriction might help her develop better control."

"Agreed," Orach nodded, turning his attention to other matters in the data. His eyes narrowed as something caught his attention. "Mother Empress, you retrieved their entire database?"

"Yes, Young Master. I downloaded all critical information from the Justice League and Batman's systems. However..." Mother Empress's voice grew grave as she displayed new information, "I found disturbing records of events they call 'CRISIS' - catastrophic incidents that repeatedly reshaped this lower realm."

"According to these records," she continued, "an entity known as the Anti-Monitor from the antimatter realm attempted to destroy all positive matter universes. The Monitor, its counterpart, gathered heroes from across universes to combat this threat."

"The casualties?" Orach asked, though the answer was already clear in the data stream.

"Significant losses, including that universe's Flash and Supergirl. The aftermath merged all positive matter universes into one, though later Crisis events restored the multiverse." She paused, bringing up additional files. "There's more - references to other celestial beings, particularly one entity that should interest you: the 'Great Darkness.'"

Orach massaged his temples, leaning back in his chair. "This is... absurd. How did this universe's creator god allow such chaos? And this 'Great Darkness'—it sounds like nothing more than a chaotic space beast with a link to the primordial law of darkness. Those creatures usually just want to be left alone and sleep in peace. Why would any creator god establish a lower realm in such a location?" He stood abruptly. "I really need to get my hands on that stone—"

"Book, Young Master," Mother Empress corrected gently.

"...Right. I need a break before this drives me to rampage."

As he stepped out of the dimming lab, he sensed Diana and Rachel's arrival through a spatial ripple in the living room. Without hesitation, he transported himself to them, gathering both into a tight embrace.

"Orach, we're back-" Diana's words were cut short by his sudden hug.

Diana and Rachel exchanged worried glances before Rachel looked up. "Dad, is everything okay? Are you still tired?"

"Nothing's wrong, princess," Orach smiled, patting her head. "Having you both in my arms means everything is perfect. I'm fully recovered - just let your dad be selfish for a moment."

Diana started to speak but paused, closing her eyes to sense their soul corridor connection. She felt his usual tranquility, but there was an undercurrent of irritation. Deciding to postpone her lecture about Rachel's spell access, she simply returned the hug after exchanging a knowing look with their daughter.

Later, after telling them about Adirosas and Aurelia's ascension to report to the other young heavenly emperors, they explored the estate together. Eventually, Diana did give Orach an earful about Rachel's dangerous spell, making both father and daughter hang their heads.

After apologizing, Orach turned to Rachel with a stern expression. "Rachel, this isn't how a princess should conduct herself. You know better. You should have simply knocked that boy unconscious and let his friends handle him. Why attempt such dangerous spells without consulting me? I granted you archive access because I trusted your judgment, but unleashing such power in the lower realm—especially before mastering your Ki after your breakthrough?" He sighed. "Your mother is right—I've spoiled you. You're grounded for the next Earth month, with restricted archive access. Do you accept?"

As he spoke aloud, he also communicated mentally through his soul shard in Rachel, "I'm so proud of you, little one. Your skill in keeping that boy airborne while testing moves on him was brilliant. Mother Empress showed me the logs — you gave that boy a good beating. Haha, it was fun to watch. You handled the situation well. And mastering a higher realm spell on your own? Impressive! But next time, please consult with me first. While spells like 'Dark Sun' show your potential, there are far more dangerous ones in the archives. So, I'll adjust your access — you can browse spell summaries, but come to me for permission to study them fully, and you'll test them inside the training chamber first. Your mother is right about the risks. I'll always support your growth, but we must be careful with dangerous spells moving forward. Remember little one, cultivation is a journey, not a sprint."

Rachel kept her head down, but her eyes widened at the mental message. Understanding her father's clever communication, she responded both ways, "I'm sorry, Dad. I accept my punishment—it's only fair. I was careless." Mentally, she added: 'Thanks, Dad. This mental link is cool, if a bit weird. About what happened, I understand. I know I made a mistake—I got too excited—but I promise to ask permission before learning more advanced spells and practice them first in the ship's training chamber as you suggested. You have my word: I'll be more careful.'

Orach nodded. "Good. Now go reflect in your room. Later we'll plan our vacation - we'll go incognito and enjoy ourselves like any other human family." Mentally, he added, 'I'm proud of you, my little princess. Now go.'

Rachel nodded and hurried upstairs, trying to hide her smile.

Orach watched her go with a fond expression, only to freeze when a slender hand grabbed his ear. "Huh?"

"Orach, dear," Diana's smile made him wince - it wasn't a pleasant one.

"Yes, love?" he attempted innocence.

"Do you think I'm blind to the expressions of the two people I love most? Even with her head down, I know when my daughter is holding back laughter. Were you two having a secret mental conversation during that scolding?" said Diana with a stern expression.

'Father was right... women are scary,' Orach thought as he endured an hour of Diana's lecture, trying to coax his fiancée while Rachel happily researched vacation destinations upstairs.

Gotham

The Batwing glided silently through Gotham's night sky, approaching Wayne Manor. As it passed through the concealed waterfall entrance to the Batcave, automated systems smoothly guided the aircraft to its landing platform. Batman and Cheetah emerged from the cockpit to find Alfred waiting with a silver tray bearing tea and freshly baked biscuits in his hands.

"Welcome home, Master Bruce, Mistress Barbara," Alfred greeted them with a slight bow. "Might I interest either of you in some refreshments?"

"Not now, Alfred," Bruce replied, heading straight for the main computer. Taking his seat, his fingers flew across the keyboard as he initiated a search algorithm for Talia al Ghul.

Barbara on the other hand accepted a cup with a warm smile. "Thank you, Alfred. These look wonderful."

Alfred acknowledged her with a gentle smile and respectful nod, but his keen eyes didn't miss Bruce's intense focus on the screen. Observing the multiple search queries and their target, his expression hardened. "Master Bruce, if I may—why is locating Miss al Ghul your primary concern after returning from an alternate universe?"

Bruce's hands stilled over the keyboard. He exchanged a meaningful look with Barbara, remembering their conversation during the flight home.

Earlier in the Batwing...

The Batwing cruised through the late evening sky, an uncomfortable silence hanging between its two occupants for fifteen long minutes. Finally, Barbara gathered her courage and broke the tension. "Bruce, we need to discuss this."

"What's there to discuss?" Bruce's voice was measured, controlled.

"Don't deflect," Cheetah said firmly. "I'm speaking as Barbara now, and I need my Bruce, not the Batman."

Bruce engaged the autopilot and leaned back in his seat. "I am speaking as your Bruce," he said softly. "We need to find her, but let's not assume our universe will mirror what we saw there. Even if she is pregnant, it would still be in the early stages — it's only been a few months since that night."

"And if she is?" Barbara's voice dropped to barely above a whisper, her eyes lowered. "If that child is born... what then?"

Bruce drew a deep breath, his next words making her heart stop, "I love you, Barbara Minerva."

Her head snapped up, eyes wide with disbelief. "Bruce... you..."

"I love you," he repeated, while she covered her mouth, tears glistening in her eyes. "Don't make me say it again - you know I'm not good at this. Whatever happens with the child, our relationship will only grow and evolve, unless you choose otherwise."

"Never!" Barbara growled, punctuating her declaration with a kick to his seat.

"Easy there," Bruce warned, half-serious. "This isn't exactly a spacious cabin."

"You're impossible," Barbara grumbled. "Way to ruin the moment."

Bruce's expression softened. "If that child is born and that's a big if, I won't let them be raised by the League of Shadows. We both know what that path leads to. I am sure you felt it on that boy. Instead..." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "We could raise them together, as a family. I know it's asking a lot, and this isn't how you probably imagined things, but I can't picture anyone else by my side. Will you allow me this selfishness?"

Barbara's arms wrapped around him from behind, her claws carefully retracted as she embraced him. "You really are selfish, you know that?"

"I know," Bruce acknowledged, gently taking her hand.

"And I love you for it," Barbara whispered. "You wonderful, impossible man. I was so terrified you'd leave me to give that child a 'proper' family with her. But you've made me so happy. Even when you struggle to express it, I feel your love in everything you do. I never needed to hear the words—just being by your side was all I ever wanted. But hearing you say them now, Bruce... you've made me truly happy."

"I'm sorry for worrying you," Bruce said, squeezing her hand.

"Listen well, you fool," Barbara's voice was fierce with emotion. "Be more selfish. I'm yours, completely. And I'm not some weak woman, not anymore—so don't you dare shut me out or underestimate me."

"Never again," Bruce promised.

"That child will be mine," Barbara declared fiercely. "I'll love them with all my heart. I'll be the mother they deserve—spoiling them while you'll be the bad cop, handling discipline. I'll be both their mother and best friend. When they will think of 'mom,' my face will be the only one that matters to them."

"I know you will," Bruce smiled. "Thank you, Barb."

"And Bruce? When the child asks about their birth mother—and they will—we tell them the truth. We document everything from now on. I want clear proof to show them exactly who and what she was, so her shadow can never threaten our family."

"I understand, but Barb - no killing. Not even her. We can't stoop to their level. But you're right about documenting everything. We do this together, properly."

"Fine," Barbara conceded with a growl. "I'll try. But if she or her people threaten you, all bets are off."

"That's all I ask," Bruce replied softly. Barbara released him and settled back, a contented smile playing across her face as she gazed at the now night sky, already planning to share the news with her best friend Diana.

"Bruce?" she called, still watching the stars.

"Yes?"

"We should tell Alfred everything. He's family - he deserves to know."

"Agreed," Bruce nodded.

"One more thing," Barbara added, her tone turning playful.

"What is it?"

"We really need a new Batwing design. Something with more room... and rotating seats. For strategic purposes, of course. Just imagine - you, me, and the open sky..."

Bruce's eye twitched slightly. 'Does she think designing an aircraft of this caliber is simple?' he thought, but couldn't help smiling as he replied, "I'll see what I can do."

With that the Batwing's silhouette drew near to Gotham, the city lights visible to the two as they made their final approach.

Back in the present at the Batcave, Bruce met Alfred's questioning gaze. "Alfred. We need to tell you something."

"Do go on, sir," Alfred said with a grave expression. "I'm most eager to hear this."

Bruce looked at the man who had been a father figure to him since childhood. Standing from the computer, he brought over a nearby chair and said, "Please sit, Alfred."

Alfred's eyes narrowed slightly as he took the offered chair. Years of service had taught him to read Bruce's subtle cues. "Very well, sir."

Bruce returned to his chair, and Barbara perched on the right armrest, crossing her legs. Taking Bruce's hand, they shared a meaningful glance before they turned to face Alfred together.

Carefully, they recounted their experience in the alternate universe, the glimpse of a possible future, and their concerns about Talia. Alfred listened intently, his expression remaining neutral until they finished.

"I see," Alfred finally spoke, setting back in his chair. "And you've made your decision about how to proceed should your suspicions prove correct?"

"We have," Bruce confirmed, glancing at Barbara. "If there is a child, we'll raise them together, here at the manor."

Alfred's eyes softened as he looked between them. "Then might I suggest preparing the east wing nursery? It hasn't been used since your own childhood, Master Bruce, but with some renovation, it would be perfect."

Barbara's eyes widened in surprise. "You're taking this remarkably well, Alfred."

"My dear," Alfred smiled warmly, "I've watched Master Bruce grow from a grieving boy into the man he is today. Nothing would make me happier than to see this family grow, especially with someone as remarkable as yourself by his side."

Bruce cleared his throat, clearly moved but attempting to maintain composure. "First, we need to locate Talia. We can't assume anything until—"

"The nursery will be ready regardless," Alfred interrupted firmly. "Even if this child isn't born in this reality, you two will have children of your own someday. Now then, shall we discuss color schemes for the renovation?"

Barbara laughed softly, leaning against Bruce. "I think that's Alfred's way of telling us to stay positive, love."

"Indeed, Mistress Barbara," Alfred nodded approvingly. "Though I must insist we avoid any bat-themed decor. I don't fancy being startled by a toddler declaring 'I am Batman' at three in the morning."

Bruce's lips twitched at this, while Barbara laughed heartily, both imagining a tiny caped crusader—their own "Batbaby"—terrorizing the halls of Wayne Manor.

"Very well," Bruce cleared his throat. "I've initiated search parameters for Talia's last known locations and recent League activity. We should have results soon."

"If I may suggest, Master Bruce," Alfred said gently, "allow me to monitor the search while you both rest. You've had quite an extraordinary journey."

"He's right," Barbara agreed. "We both need proper sleep—actual rest, not one of your usual power naps between patrols."

Bruce opened his mouth to protest but found himself facing twin stern looks from both Alfred and Barbara. His shoulders dropped slightly in resignation. "Two hours. Wake me if anything significant appears."

"Four hours," Barbara countered firmly. "The world won't end if Batman gets adequate rest for once."

"Master Bruce," Alfred added with a knowing smile, "challenging both Mistress Barbara and myself would be... unwise."

Bruce glanced between them and sighed. "I see I'm outnumbered. Four hours then. But Alfred..."

"You have my word," Alfred assured him. "I'll be thorough and alert you immediately if anything crucial surfaces."

Barbara stood, gently tugging Bruce's arm. "Come on, stubborn man. Time for bed."

A slight smile played at Bruce's lips as he looked between them. "When did you two become such a formidable team?"

"The moment we both committed to keeping you alive and well," Barbara replied with a warm smirk. "Now up you go. Doctor's orders."

"You're not that kind of doctor," Bruce countered, though he was already rising.

"I'm your partner," she responded softly, her eyes meeting his. "That makes your wellbeing my priority. Now go. I'll join you shortly."

As Bruce headed upstairs, Barbara took his place at the computer, her fingers dancing across the keyboard with practiced ease adding a few more parameters to the queries. Alfred remained beside her, watching her work with quiet approval.

"I must say, Mistress Barbara," Alfred spoke softly, "it warms my heart to see Master Bruce finally accepting care from others."

Barbara smiled, eyes still on the screen. "He's growing, Alfred. Since Orach's gift, I've seen real change in him."

"Indeed," Alfred agreed thoughtfully. "Though I believe you underestimate your own influence. You've brought light to both this house and his life."

"Thank you, Alfred," Barbara said warmly. "That means a lot coming from you. I've set up automated alerts for any activity matching our parameters. You should get some rest too."

"Thank you, Miss." Alfred nodded, but then hesitated. "If I may, Miss Barbara... might I ask you something rather personal?"

Barbara turned to face him fully. "Of course, Alfred. You're family."

"Have you considered," he asked carefully, "whether your future children might inherit your Cheetah traits?"

Barbara's eyes widened as the full implications hit her. Her transformation wasn't a curse anymore—it was fundamentally part of who she was. "Oh my god," she whispered. "I... I never thought about that. I need to talk to Diana—and Orach—right away."

She stood quickly, already pulling out her phone. "I'm sorry, Alfred, I need to make an urgent call."

As Barbara hurried to the elevator, Alfred watched her go with a thoughtful expression. "Hmm... seems that particular consideration hadn't crossed her mind." He picked up a biscuit from the nearby tray, contemplating. "Well, whatever the future holds, those children will be extraordinary—and thoroughly loved."

And so the night at Wayne Manor continued: Alfred vigilantly monitoring the search, Barbara seeking clarity from Diana and Orach, and Bruce—for once—getting some much-needed rest.

The Following Day-Sunday

This morning at Wayne Tech, Orach had called his team for individual progress reviews. After meeting with his team members and providing guidance to his team, he scheduled a meeting with Bruce and Lucius in the afternoon. To his surprise, both executives arrived looking unusually relieved to be at work.

Raising an eyebrow, Orach asked, "You both seem rather eager to be here on a weekend. Why is that?"

Lucius and Bruce exchanged knowing looks before Lucius spoke first. "Dealing with my son's current phase is... challenging. The office is peaceful in comparison."

Bruce added with a slight grimace, "And thanks to your fiancée putting ideas in Barbara's head, she and Diana have spent hours planning a group vacation on some private island after your family expedition. I needed an escape before getting pulled into that discussion."

After a night of searching yielded no leads on Talia and the League of Shadows, both Bruce and Barbara acknowledged their target's exceptional skill at evading detection and that this search would take time. Rather than dwelling on the temporary setback, Barbara saw an opportunity to address another pressing matter. During her conversation with Diana the previous night about an unrelated topic, she learned of Diana and Orach's upcoming vacation plans, including time reserved on a private island. This reminded Barbara of their own vacation plans that had been put on hold when Orach's departure to Oa had created a surge in criminal activity requiring Batman's presence in Gotham. Seeing the perfect timing — before their search for Talia intensified — Barbara presented Bruce with an argument for taking their much-needed break, in ways... he couldn't refuse.

Shaking his head at their responses, Orach moved forward with the meeting's purpose. He instructed Mother Empress to project the schematics for the satellite station he had designed. "Have you had time to review these and decide how you want to proceed with this project?"

Bruce's expression turned thoughtful while Lucius frowned slightly. "The concept is solid," Lucius began, "but funding a secret space station for the Justice League through Wayne Tech requires careful financial maneuvering to maintain legality and discretion."

"I understand but," Orach then had Mother Empress display images from the alternate universe, the plans for the Justice League headquarters from that universe's Batman and their hero roster. While Bruce was familiar with the multiverse situation and understood what he was being shown, Lucius wasn't and was wide eyed at the images beings projected.

"What... what exactly am I looking at?" Lucius asked.

Bruce sighed and explained their recent journey across the multiverse while Lucius listened, his eyes widening with each revelation.

Seeing how that universe's Justice League had also recognized the need for a orbital facility, and understanding the likelihood of their own hero community expanding similarly, Lucius nodded decisively. "This needs to be prioritized."

"Wayne Tech won't bear the full cost," Orach assured them. He explained his plan to utilize funds from accounts he had Mother Empress establish using assets from both Lex Luthor (or "Naked Luthor," as he liked to call him) and Veronica Cale - both of whom had caused significant trouble for the League and Wonder Woman specifically.

The mention of Cale reminded Bruce of an incident during Orach's banishment in the Void Realm. Barbara and Diana had confronted Veronica Cale, whose security team proved no match for Barbara despite their numbers. When Ares arrived to defend Cale as promised, Barbara - still new to her powers - had insisted on testing herself against the god of war. Though she fought bravely, Ares's experience proved overwhelming until Diana stepped in to decisively defeat him.

Despite her injuries and justified anger over her lost expedition team, Barbara had shown remarkable restraint upon reaching Cale. Seeing a photo of Veronica's daughter on the desk, Barbara delivered a single punch to Cale's stomach, then spoke firmly: "This ends here. You deserve worse, but you have a daughter who needs you. What happened to my team was wrong, but so was what happened to your daughter. Let this hatred die today. Never cross our paths again, Veronica. Choose to do better."

With Diana's proud support, Barbara had left Cale's office and returned to heal at Diana's home before heading back to Gotham.

Though Barbara had initially kept the incident from him, Bruce had actually followed them that night, watching from the shadows. Only Diana had sensed his presence but chose not to reveal it to Barbara. Days later, Barbara confessed everything to him unprompted, explaining she didn't want secrets between them. To Bruce, this incident proved not only Barbara's growing powers but also her honesty and capacity for mercy—qualities that made her even more special to him and showed he could truly trust her.

Bruce recalling the history between Barbara and Veronica Cale, had no objections to using these funds, though Lucius's expression revealed his unease about the ethical implications.

Orach directed Mother Empress to transfer the funds into Wayne Tech's R&D division. Over the next hour, he worked with Bruce and Lucius to map out the project milestones. When they finished, Orach bid them farewell and stepped through a portal to Azarath.

Bruce however, decided to go to his office, settling in to catch up on work, he was in no hurry to go back home. Before he could even begin reviewing files, a familiar presence filled the room as Zatanna materialized before his desk.

"Hello Bruce, how are you doing?" she greeted softly.

"How can I help you, Zatanna?" Bruce asked without looking up from his computer screen.

"Still giving me the cold shoulder?" Zatanna sighed, crossing her arms. "Look, I know our absence during Darkseid's attack disappointed the League, but there's something urgent you need to know."

The gravity in her tone made Bruce pause his work. He finally looked up at her. "Please, sit."

Once seated, Zatanna began explaining, "Constantine and I were following your suggestion about forming the League's magical division. While vetting potential recruits, we were attacked around the same time as Darkseid's forces descended. Someone—or something—managed to breach the House of Mysteries' wards, which should have been impossible. They not only damaged the house but also—" She hesitated. "They accessed our secure area and stole several dangerous magical artifacts. Both John and I were severely injured trying to stop them. This is why we couldn't participate in the defense against the invasion or inform you sooner."

Bruce's expression darkened. "The stone Orach warned us about—was it taken?"

"Yes," Zatanna confirmed quietly. "That's why I came directly to you."

Bruce leaned back, staring at the ceiling. "It's like the universe is playing some cosmic joke on us."

"Bruce..." Zatanna's voice carried a hint of guilt.

"How's Constantine doing?"

"Recovering, but the attack left him badly wounded."

"Any leads on our mystery thief?"

"Only that they wielded demonic magic."

"Not much, but it's a start," Bruce said, already reaching for his computer. "I'll brief the League immediately."

"Shouldn't we involve that girl Raven as well?" Zatanna suggested thoughtfully. "Her experience with demonic magic could prove valuable."

"No," Bruce replied firmly. "Not at this stage."

Zatanna raised an eye brow. "May I ask why not?"

Bruce's expression grew more serious. "Two reasons. First, she's unavailable for the next two weeks. More importantly..." He leaned forward slightly. "The moment we involve Raven, we involve her father. Orach specifically entrusted that stone to Constantine's care, and he trusted my judgment in that decision. How do you think he'll react when he learns we lost it to a thief?"

Zatanna visibly paled, remembering Orach's display of power during the Thanagarian invasion. She nodded quickly. "Point taken."

"I'll brief J'onn and have the League coordinate with you and Constantine on the search," Bruce said, already typing on his computer. "Tell Constantine we need any leads he can provide as soon as possible."

"Understood," Zatanna replied, standing up. "I'll head back and see what else we can uncover about our mysterious thief. And Bruce..." she paused at the door, "I'm sorry we let you down on this."

Bruce looked up from his screen. "You haven't. Not yet. But we need to find that stone before someone puts it to use."

With a warm smile and a whispered incantation, Zatanna vanished from the office. Bruce rose from his desk and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows of his corner office, gazing out at the Gotham skyline stretching before him.

"What's really brewing out there?" he murmured, his reflection faint against the afternoon light. Recent events weighed heavily on his mind—Darkseid's invasion, the arrival of more impossibly powerful beings from higher realms, his enemies uniting to form an anti-Justice League and establishing a hidden base on an uncharted island, the reality of multiversal travel, and now this demonic presence stealing mystical artifacts. Bruce hated not having all the pieces to the puzzle.

Moving to a discrete cabinet, he retrieved a crystal decanter and poured himself a measure of aged scotch. Standing before the panoramic view of his city, he allowed himself a moment of vulnerability.

"Perhaps Barbara has the right idea after all," he said softly, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "A vacation... just might be what I need." Below him, Gotham continued its daily rhythm, blissfully unaware of the storms gathering on the horizon—both here and beyond their realm.
