Chapter 71 - 55: A Hideout Within the Hideout

Third Person POV

"Find them! Fucking find them and bring them back! Alive!"

Malum paces through his office, his head beginning to hurt. The boy had shifted. The wolfsbane in his system was too low. He had timed things incorrectly and for that, Malum was furious. Now his only connection to the originals, to the Lycans, was gone. Off in the woods somewhere.

They couldn't have gone far. The girl is injured. His experiments would find them.

When night falls, they are still not found. Malum destroys several items in a training area he had designated for his experiments. Experiments flinch as they watch chairs and targets shatter to pieces.

Malum had the body of the traitor burned, tempted to kick it until it unlikely sprang back to life just so he could beat the life out of it again. One of his high ranking experiments, Karlin, returned the first night. His irritation matched Malum's. Karlin supposedly never trusted Ian and was happy to execute the task of getting rid of the traitor, though he admitted to wishing it didn't come at the cost of the loss of the boy. Karlin was one of the conscious experiments who was promised power through a series of actions undertaken as a whole. Commit to the experiment, get the boy with the Lycan relation, find the Lycans, go through the experiment again. The Lycan blood would bring him greatness, he was promised. And ever since he was a young boy, all he wanted was greatness.

After a discussion with Malum, Karlin was sent back out to attempt to find the escapees.

His head was spinning when news came the second day of no findings. A large group of wolves was heading in their direction. A third of Malum's experiments were still spread across the country or out on alternative assignment. Another third were in search of the missing two. That left only Malum and a third of his less skilled experiments in the caves. They would have to take shelter. This further irritated him.

Of course Malum has a hideout within the hideout. Exactly such a possible instance was predicted before the chess pieces even began to fall. Malum sent out the four nearest experiments to spread the word. Retreat to the inner tunnels. These were behind hidden doors in the darkest of corridors. Meant to look like dead ends or at the end of particularly dark but otherwise filled halls. The doors were made of stone and slid heavily into place. Malum hushed the experiments as they arrived, telling them not to make a peep as they came. He kept an eye out for one particular person.

When he spotted Christopher, he was tempted to throw him to the oncoming wolves. Surely, the wolves would be from the pack he had Christopher retrieved from. Malum should have known it would only be a matter of time until the girl's mate found them. It was too bad for them that the girl had escaped only the day before.

The wolves don't find the entrance until nightfall. Malum stares at a set of three screens he has set up in this area of the cave. Getting the trail cameras to set up initially was difficult enough, he never thought he would use it this many years later. The cameras are old and the quality shows. A particular few are covered in what he's sure are spider and not cobwebs. Through all these faults, he watches as the wolves inspect the house that serves as an entrance to the tunnels. There's not too many of the cameras but he's still able to watch as the wolves venture into the kitchen and cautiously through the cabinet that led to the caves. For a while, he sees nothing but them going through the cabinet. There's no cameras on the opposite side of the entrance.

His foot starts tapping as he waits. There's a scuffling behind him. He turns to see Christopher being grabbed by two different experiments and being forced towards him.

"Let go of me!" Christopher protests, ripping his shoulders violently in either direction. His attempt fails but comes to a halt as Malum places a hand on his chest, bringing his finger to his own lips and turning back towards the cameras.

"Your pack is here," Malum calmly informs him.

"What?" Christopher stops his struggle and stares at the cameras as the wolves begin to split up and explore the caves Malum had built so many years ago. Christopher whispers, not so much to himself, "But that was so quick."

Malums eyes narrow, his shoulders tensing. In a second, he's out of his chair he was planted at. His hand lunges for Christopher's neck. "What did you do," he hisses.

Christopher pulls at the hand obstructing his air way. Malum doesn't budge. Malum squeezes tighter and tighter as Christopher's vision begins to blur at the edges. The experiments merely watch their bosses wrath being taken out on someone who wasn't them. Christopher's arms fall to his sides as his eyes flutter closed. 'Not so tough, this one,' thought Malum. "Someone put him somewhere," he instructs, in a low voice. He's quick to go back to the cameras.

He watches as the largest wolf, the alpha, and one other go towards the cell block and a larger group towards his lab. Another group splits off towards the interrogation room. He's glad to see the dark corridor that leads down to his office is seemingly not noticed. He keeps glancing back to that one as the alpha and the other wolf take their time in the cell block. There's no camera inside the cell block nor any of the other rooms. No mics to hear any chatter. In that moment, he regrets that. He wants to know what they're saying, what they're doing. Once they vacate the area, that would be one of his first orders of business.

Eventually, the wolves all leave. Malum, still anxious about a potential attack, has the experiments and an unconscious Christopher wait out the night in the hideout. When he decides enough time has passed, he first sends out two experiments to double check the entrance and the caves themself. At the all clear, his first order is to have Christopher locked away in the cellars. He would deal with him later. His second action is to check the lab. To no surprise, he finds the lab practically destroyed. All his bottles of wolfsbane shattered, his vials of different bloods and venoms were found and emptied in the sink, his microscopes bent and twisted. What isn't destroyed, Malum destroys himself in a moment of anger. When he is calmed, he regrets this action. More to replace but that would come soon enough.

He retreats to his office, pulling out his map that included the land of the Paramount Pack. A four day journey by foot. He would want to wait until all his experiments returned to base. He continuously tracked his finger on the best trail between the caves in the mountain and the large pack. Soon. He refused to mark this as a failure.
