The streets of I-Island were in chaos by the time the night reached its peak. People carried stolen goods in their arms, their expressions a mixture of anger, desperation, and grim satisfaction.
To some, it felt like justice had been served. To others, it was a hollow attempt to fill the void left by the atrocities they had endured.
At the center of the island, where the bloody monument stood, David Shield remained tied to the post. His once-proud frame was weak and battered, his head hanging low.
Stones and debris surrounded him, remnants of the crowd's earlier fury. The air was heavy with tension and despair.
---
Melissa stood silently, looking out at the devastation from the edge of the scene. Her heart ached as she took in the shattered windows, overturned vehicles, and the distant cries of people.
She saw her father's figure slumped in the distance, but she couldn't bring herself to approach him. The betrayal was too fresh, too overwhelming.
A gentle hand on her shoulder startled her, and she turned to see Izuku. His expression was soft, yet firm, making sure he didn't make things hard for her. "Come with me," he said quietly.
"There's something you need to see. After seeing that if you still hate me, then no problem, I'll never show you my face anymore." to which Melissa simply nodded not knowing what to say.
Without another word, he urged her to get up. Melissa followed, her mind racing with questions she couldn't voice. He held Melissa in princess carry as he said, "Hold tight," which she followed as he immediately teleported her to the hospital in Hiroshima.
---
When they arrived in Hiroshima, Melissa wasn't prepared for what she saw. The hospital was enormous, yet it seemed too small for the number of people crammed inside.
The hospital hall was filled with the low hum of activity. Doctors moved quickly between patients, nurses adjusted IV drips, and the soft murmur of conversations filled the air.
The sounds of sobbing, frantic voices, and hurried footsteps filled the air.
Melissa's breath caught as she stepped through the main entrance. Rows upon rows of beds stretched as far as she could see. Injured men, women, and children were everywhere. Doctors and nurses moved quickly, trying to attend to everyone.
Her eyes widened at the sight of a small child clutching a bandaged arm, his face streaked with tears. He sat next to an older woman—his grandmother, perhaps—who was crying silently while stroking his hair. Across from them, a young girl was hugging her father tightly, both of them crying tears of relief.
Melissa turned to Izuku, her voice barely above a whisper. "This… this is what you meant, isn't it?"
Izuku nodded. "These are the people who were hurt because of what your father and his associates did. They were taken from their homes, experimented on, and left to die.
Some of them lost everything—family, friends, their futures. This…" He gestured around them. "…this is why I had to do what I did."
Melissa's legs felt weak, and she stumbled slightly. She caught herself against the wall, her eyes darting from one broken figure to another.
A mother held her injured baby tightly, whispering words of comfort, trying to get her baby to sleep. An older man, missing a leg, sat quietly while a nurse adjusted his IV drip.
Children with hollow, broken expressions stared blankly ahead, their innocence stolen by horrors they should never have faced.
Izuku led Melissa to a quieter corner, where two children sat on a hospital bed, their small frames looking out of place in such a grim environment.
"That's Tatsuya," Izuku said softly, gesturing to the boy.
Melissa looked at him closely. Tatsuya was only eight years old, his face pale but his eyes filled with cautious hope. He glanced up as Izuku approached, managing a small smile.
"Tatsuya, this is Melissa. She's here to help too," Izuku introduced gently.
Tatsuya nodded shyly. "Hello," he said in a quiet voice.
Melissa knelt down, her heart aching at how small and fragile he seemed. "Hi, Tatsuya," she said, her voice soft. "It's nice to meet you."
Izuku's expression grew somber as he gestured to the girl sitting beside Tatsuya. "And this is Nezumi," he said.
Nezumi was even smaller than Tatsuya, her large eyes scanning Melissa curiously. She clutched a stuffed animal tightly, as if it was her only lifeline.
"She's his sister," Izuku explained. "She's just nine years old. She's the only person Tatsuya has in his life. They're orphans. All they have is each other."
Melissa felt her chest tighten as she looked at the siblings. The way Tatsuya protectively held Nezumi's hand spoke volumes about their bond.
Izuku's voice grew heavier, filled with emotion. "When we found Tatsuya in Kyoto, he was searching for Nezumi. She'd been taken to one of the labs. If we hadn't saved her…" He paused, his fists clenching slightly.
"If she had died, what was I supposed to tell him? With what face could I have looked at an eight-year-old boy and told him I couldn't save his sister? That I let the only person he had left die?"
Melissa felt tears sting her eyes as she looked at Nezumi. Izuku's words echoed in her mind, the weight of his choices and actions hitting her like a tidal wave.
Tatsuya's voice broke the silence. "Thank you," he said, looking up at Izuku with genuine gratitude. "Thank you for saving Nezumi."
Nezumi nodded, her small voice barely audible. "Thank you… for saving my brother… and me."
Izuku knelt down, placing a reassuring hand on both of their shoulders. "You don't have to thank me. I just did what needed to be done. You both deserve to live, to have a chance at happiness."
Melissa watched as Tatsuya clung to his sister, his small hand brushing away her tears.
Tears began streaming down Melissa's face. "I didn't… I didn't know. I didn't see any of this on the island. I…" Her voice cracked as she clutched her chest. "I should have noticed. I should have done something. How could I not have known this was happening?"
Izuku placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, his tone gentle but firm. "Melissa, no one's blaming you. Your father went to great lengths to hide what he was doing.
If we hadn't received the SOS from I-Island, we would've been running in circles, searching everywhere for them. Even after reaching I-Island, we didn't know where the facility was located."
He paused, his voice softening as he looked into her eyes. "I won't lie—I used you. I played with your emotions, even had sex with you to get you to my side. But, it is because of you and your help that we found Nezumi and the other victims before it was too late."
Izuku's expression grew serious, his words deliberate. "Tatsuya and Nezumi got reunited because of you. Now that you know the truth, and the reason behind my actions you have a choice.
You can either make a difference, show everyone that even though you share the same blood as your father, your values are different. You are nothing like him. Or…" He hesitated for a moment before continuing. "…you can stay quiet, go back to your normal life, and act like a betrayed kid.
No one will harm you if you choose that, in fact people will even show sympathy towards you. But the Melissa I had those happy moments with, the Melissa I got intimate with would definitely choose the first option, now the choice is yours."
She looked up at him, her eyes filled with anger, sadness, and guilt. "You are right," she whispered. "If I had seen this firsthand, I would have done the same thing you did. These people… they didn't deserve this." Her fists clenched tightly at her sides. "But he… my father… He did this. He ruined their lives."
Her voice rose, trembling with emotion. "How could he? How could he do this to innocent people? To children?!"
She broke down, unable to hold back her sobs. Izuku caught her as she sank to the floor, crying into her hands.
"I hate him," she choked out between sobs. "I hate what he's done. I hate that he betrayed me, betrayed everyone. How could he do this to all these people? How could he do this to me?"
Izuku knelt beside her, his expression calm but sympathetic. "Melissa, it's okay to feel this way. You're allowed to be angry, to grieve. But don't let it consume you. Use that anger to make things better.
These people need hope. You can be that hope. And I'll be by your side, supporting you, having your back, and protecting you."
Melissa sniffled, her voice shaky as she looked at him. "Will you really be there for me? Will you truly have my back? You… you don't hate me for what my father did?"
Izuku shook his head firmly, his gaze steady. "Melissa, I could never hate you. Everything that happened between us that night was real.
"It's true I acted faster than I might have otherwise because of the situation, but everything else—everything I felt—was real. If it didn't mean anything, I wouldn't be here now, helping you understand how serious your dad's actions were, or even apologizing for using you and playing with your emotions.
You're a good person, Melissa—a perfect combination of beauty and brains, with your heart in the right place. The world needs more people like you. And I'll always be here for you."
Tears welled in her eyes again, but this time they weren't just from sadness. Melissa nodded slowly, his words giving her a sense of relief and comfort.
She wiped her tears, her hands trembling, and looked around the hospital again, seeing the pain and suffering that her father's actions had caused. For the first time, she truly understood the weight of what Izuku had been trying to tell her.
"I'll do whatever it takes to help them," she said quietly, her voice steady despite the tears still falling. "I don't want anyone else to feel like this. I won't let his legacy be pain and destruction."
Izuku gave her a small, reassuring smile. "You're stronger than you think, Melissa. And you're not alone in this. We'll fix this—together."
Melissa nodded, determination slowly replacing her despair. As she stood up, she glanced around the hospital once more, her heart heavy but resolute.
She couldn't change the past, but she could fight for a better future. For the victims. For herself. And for all the people who still believed in kindness and justice.
