The monotonous and hollow sound traveled along the floor, and the dimly lit carriage was filled with an almost suffocating stench, but no one protested or cursed, only the sound of struggling breaths.
Such a scene in modern civilized society would be considered inconceivable. Even if one couldn't match the high-quality service of the Empire's railway, basic space and riding conditions should be assured. Even the worst in the Duchy's standing-room-only trains shouldn't reach the point where lives are constantly at risk, and even though equally stench-ridden and overcrowded, there would certainly be curses and protests, even physical conflicts.
An atmosphere where even crying and breathing are extremely suppressed is impossible on a normal train.
This freight train, of course, is not a normal train.
