CHAPTER START---

---Earthland, the year X769, October...

In this vast world of unimaginable wonders, there are only four major continents.

Each conveniently placed as if they were cardinal points, hosting all manner of monsters and magic.

But only one held a boy with this unique magic.

Ishgar, the western continent, divided into 17 nations, most of which were larger than Fiore, a small nation toward the east, resting on the ocean as part of a peninsula.

While all but three nations were geographically larger than Fiore, none could match its might in Magic, and by extension its abundance of Magic powered technology.

Earning the jealous glares from other nations, Fiore was currently in the midst of weeding outs its rotten apples from the Magic community.

Law after law were being reconsidered and changed, lives altered with the stroke of a pen, and small Guild Wars happening all over the nation.

But that was of no concern to the 8-year-old boy sitting in bed. In the heart of a small village hidden at the back of the Phoenix Mountains.

The blanket was draped over him, keeping the winter chill away, but more importantly, keeping what he was doing hidden.

Resting in his lap was a book of basic magic techniques. Simple and harmless, learning how to breathe properly, how to focus and sense the magic energy within you, how to read runes and what certain words mean in magic.

All things he's read before, but still continued to read and practice.

As he turns the page, he notices something in this book that the others didn't have, a simple mental exercise to help a wizard feel the surrounding magic easier.

He slouches over slightly, and squints as he increases the magic power he was using for his light source.

He held what could only be described as a small, slowly spinning galaxy in his left hand. A black void dotted with hundreds of twinkling stars.

A sight of power beyond measure... If it was real.

But this was simply a Soul Projection, an outward display of a person's inward soul.

A technique that hardly anyone uses, for most people don't need it.

It's simply redundant, as all it does is display your core magic- the magic you naturally awaken-.

If you were a fire wizard, your Soul Projection would be a flame. If you were a lightning wizard, it would be sparks.

But in his case, showing someone this was much simpler than explaining exactly what his magic is or does.

Because frankly, he's had it for 5 years and still isn't sure of what it does.

Seeing a diagram in the book, he closes his hand, crushing the image of the galaxy before opening his hand, and a small glowing ball of golden light is there instead.

The most basic application of Light Magic, and a much better light source when you need to notice minor details.

One subset of Magic that comes with his own unique Magic, so learning as if he were a Light Magic user was simply a good idea.

It certainly didn't hurt that he was born to a novice Light Magic user.

"So I put my hands together like that," his voice was barely a whisper as he runs his slightly pale hand across the page, examining the diagrams.

"Ok, I think I can do this. Just focus on my Magic Container, and breath deeply."

He takes a deep breath and sits up properly. The ball of light floats in front of him as he puts his hands together, as if he were praying.

The thick book also begins floating the tilts itself for him to see the diagram and double check his posture.

Another aspect of his magic, Gravity.

Nowhere near as common as Light Magic. Rare enough that finding some books about it wasn't impossible for his parents. They just had to be birthday gifts.

His magic, Cosmic, as named by the intense feeling in his soul when it was first awakened, is entirely unique.

Light and Gravity have been mastered by mages before him, and he's sure some mages had them both together.

But the additional properties of his magic are entirely unique, along with the supposed side effect of giving him vast depths of Magic Energy for his age.

A necessity for his magic, as according to his parents, most magic doesn't take anywhere near as much energy as his.

"Now I count backward and breathe..." he says while closing his eyes, keeping the book and Light Sphere floating under the blanket with him.

He counts down from ten, and by the time he gets to 1, he can feel the magic energy flowing out of his internal magic container and through his body.

He knew it wasn't literal, because magic wasn't stored in any specific body part.

But you'd be amazed at how much visualizing helps with learning, like now.

Imagining it flowing from his heart, up to his shoulder, down to his arms and into his hands.

As it reaches his palms, which were clasped together, he could feel a tingling sensation as magic jumps from one hand to the other.

Exiting his body, connecting to the other hand, then entering his body once more.

His eyes shoot open and he separates his hands. He grabs the book out of the air and begins reading it again.

"I must have done something wrong. It was supposed to go to my palms, then turn around. How did I even suck it back into my hands... Weird."

He drops the book for it to float once more, then resumes his training.

He repeats the process once more, and the same phenomenon occurs.

'This is so freaky, I couldn't absorb dad's magic, but I can do this with my own, so weird. Mmm, but it feels all tingly...' he thinks.

Minutes passed before he realized what was happening, and half his magical energy had been depleted.

A small wave of mental exhaustion snaps him out of his trance and he struggles to focus his vision.

"Why am I getting tired if it's my magic?" he thinks about it for a second and focuses on his magical energy. "Oh, the magic I absorbed didn't go into my container. That's so stupid. Doesn't it know it's supposed to go there?"

He tries it one more time, just to see if he can make it go back into his container.

That way, he can effectively create a loop using his own magic.

Magic capacity is like a muscle. The more magic you use, the more your container grows over time, so he'd effectively find a way to infinitely trigger this natural growth.

If his magic worked like that.

Sadly, it never would.

But the 8-year-old had no way of knowing that, so he threw himself at the task, as he always does with interesting magic.

After another minute of practice, however, the door to this small room swings open, and before he can react, the blanket is snatched off his head.

The sight of his cluttered room, packed full of book with a few toys in the corner. And what were clearly some rocks of various sizes used to practice his magic was now on display.

Above him stood his dad, a tall and lanky man with pale skin and black hair, staring down at him with an annoyed expression.

The moonlight was dim, but the Light Sphere in the man's grasp was identical to the boys, and together they lit up the room.

The boy looks up with wide eyes as he tries to come up with an excuse.

"I was asleep before you walked in. You woke me up when the door opened," he lied, terribly.

His dad just takes a deep breath and looks at the book still floating before the boy, then at the boy.

Then narrows his eyes.

"Sorry?" the boy asks.

"Oberon, it's midnight. Go to bed," the man says in a tired voice as he grabs the book.

"But I—"

"Bed. Now." The man says as he turns around and leaves the room, closing the door behind him.

Oberon sighs, and now in the open instead of under his blanket, he was fully revealed.

Wearing a set of pajamas in white and green, he collapses onto his bed in a huff.

Thin, somewhat frail limbs, and pale skin befitting the snowcapped mountains village he lives in.

His face was still boyish, with dark eyebrows and dark grey eyes.

But his hair, it was mesmerizing.

Short, spiky hair, black, like a cosmic void.

And scattered about, there were singular strands of white peeking through the void, like stars in the night sky.

His parents would always joke that he fell from the heavens and brought a piece of them with him, and after his rise to the summit of this world, no one would say they were wrong...
