The formation hadn't locked yet. Half the frontline still scrambling for positions. Mages off-balance, archers not even fully reloaded. And the hounds? They didn't wait.
They poured in like a hungry wave of snapping jaws and flame-licked bones, their howls a chorus of fury. The sound clawed down their spines. Not just loud—but wrong, layered, like several voices shrieking through static and hate.
The first hound lunged before anyone could even blink.
Its claws scraped across a tank's chestplate, sparks flying. Another leapt into the air, teeth clamping down on a mage's shoulder. Screams. Chaos. A rogue tried to backflip away only to get tackled mid-air by a flaming beast with six legs and a molten tongue.
"SHIELDS—GET THE SHIELDS UP!" someone bellowed.
"BARRIER!" Alex's voice cracked, panicked, but clear.
He jammed his staff into the cursed ground, eyes glowing.
