There was a wonderfully ironic coincidence here—the fact that just a year ago, the Inferior, before encountering Russell, was the one who never thought at all, the "brainless" one; while Strangulation was still in the Painful Furnace, constantly accumulating pain and anger... He was the one who was "unhappy."
Now, however, their roles had completely reversed: Strangulation's temper had improved, his leadership had strengthened, but his intelligence had declined; the Inferior had lost his ability to ridicule, which had almost the entire Happiness Island despising him, as well as his freezing, foul face and temper, yet he had gained a brain he never used before.
When they traveled together now, the one making plans was the Inferior—he never used to make decisions when he was in the Execution Department.
