~Jason's Pov~
The door shuts behind her with a soft thud.
She doesn't say anything.
Neither do I.
I start the car and pull out of the university lot like we're not leaving a storm behind us, like we're not carrying secrets in the backseat.
I glance sideways.
She's just sitting there, quiet, thoughtful. Her hands rest in her lap. She looks out the window, her lashes low, the light catching on her skin like it's trying to protect her.
She's calm. But I know her mind isn't.
I know she has questions.About why I showed up like that. Why did I drag her off campus like we were running from something?
Hell, we were.
And I'm the reason she keeps getting caught in crossfire, she doesn't even know exists.
Her phone rings, breaking the silence.
She looks down. "It's Jennifer," she murmurs and picks up.
I don't eavesdrop on purpose, but her voice is gentle, tired.
"Hey, Jen… yeah, I'm okay. I'm sorry; I had to change plans last minute. Something came up with Jason."
