Seven Sins System Chapter 434. Gone
Azrael's PoV
"El, my necklace is gone."
Those words made me stop in my tracks and turn to face Puriel, who was not far behind me.
Panic was etched on her face, and her hands were frantically groping her neck and clothes.
Her eyes were wide with fear, darting around the ground as if hoping the necklace had simply fallen somewhere nearby.
For a moment, I couldn't move. Seeing her like this, so distraught, pulled at something deep within me. I could see her pale face, her lips slightly parted in a silent gasp of horror. Her fingers trembled.
"Puriel," I said, my voice low and urgent.
I took a step towards her, but she seemed not to hear me. She was lost in her own panic and despair.
The necklace wasn't just any piece of jewelry. It was the very same necklace I had given her five hundred years ago when we were just children in the mortal realm.
I approached her in a hurry. I knew the necklace was far more valuable than any ice cream could ever be.
As I reached her, my eyes scanned the ground, turning left and right, trying to spot the familiar glint of the necklace.
"Do you know where you dropped it?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.
"If I knew, I wouldn't be this panicked," she replied, her voice trembling with obvious fear. Her eyes were wide, almost frantic, as they darted around the ground.
I glanced around, thinking back to where we had been playing.
"Maybe when we played over there," I suggested, pointing toward the playground where we had spent most of our time.
Puriel's eyes followed my finger, and she nodded quickly.
"I'll check the swings, you check somewhere else," she said.
I nodded.
We ran back to the playground.
We searched everywhere. The grass, the bushes, even the hard-packed dirt paths.
We returned to the tree we had climbed earlier, scrutinizing every branch, every nook where the necklace might have caught. But the swings, with their sand-covered ground, seemed the most likely place. Jewelry could easily get lost in the soft sand, hidden from sight.
We combed through the sand meticulously.
Time seemed to stretch.
Puriel was on her knees, her hands picking at the sand.
Half an hour passed, and we still hadn't found it. I could see the frustration building in her eyes, the way her movements grew more frantic.
Her hands sifted through the sand over and over, almost mechanically, but there was no sign of the necklace. She looked so much like a child at that moment, lost and heartbroken.
"Let's forget it," I said finally, my voice heavy with resignation.
I tried to sound reassuring, even though I knew how much the necklace meant to her.
"The necklace is hundreds of years old, and I only made it from materials I found in the mortal realm. It's porous and damaged. It's just a trinket."
But she didn't seem to hear me. She didn't stop looking, her eyes still scanning the ground, her hands still sifting through the sand.
Her silence was more eloquent than any words could have been. She was determined to find it, no matter how long it took.
I watched her. I hated seeing her like this, so vulnerable and sad. I wanted to do something, anything. But I knew that finding the necklace was the only thing that would make her feel better.
I huffed and snatched her hand, halting her frantic movements. She stopped, but she didn't look at me. Her eyes were still scanning the ground, as if she could make the necklace appear by sheer force of determination.
"Let's go," I said firmly, trying to pull her attention away from the search.
"If you want to leave, just leave. I'll look for it a bit longer. Katrina is just looking for you, right?" she replied, still not meeting my eyes.
Her voice was steady, but there was a stubborn edge to it. She was determined to stay, to keep looking.
I didn't reply immediately. I could feel the frustration building within me.
I understood the sentimental value of the necklace, but it was just an old trinket. It wasn't even made of any precious material, and it held more bad memories than good. And here I was, the creator of that necklace, standing right in front of her.
Why did she have to insist on looking for something that represented a painful past?
"Puriel," I said, trying to keep my voice calm and rational, "the children's morning classes are almost over. The kids will arrive at this playground with their parents soon. It's going to get crowded. You can't use your portal skill and return to the academy without drawing attention."
She still didn't look at me, her eyes fixed on the ground. I could see the frustration etched on her face, her fingers twitching as if they wanted to continue the search.
"They'll probably take you to the police station and think you're a lost child," I reminded her once again, hoping that logic would reach her. "Do you really want to be stuck here, trying to explain to a bunch of mortals why a child is searching so desperately for an old necklace?"
But she didn't answer me immediately. Her silence stretched on, and for a moment, I thought she would continue searching.
Then, finally, she whispered, "It's fine. I will find a way to explain myself."
A long huff escaped my mouth.
"No kidding…" I said tiredly. "Here I am trying to make you happy, but it ended like this."
I couldn't hide the frustration in my voice. I had planned this day to give her joy and create a few more memories before we parted ways, but it had taken such a sour turn. It wasn't my fault, but it was undeniably annoying.
Puriel remained silent, her shoulders slumped in defeat. I could see the internal struggle in her eyes.
My heart ached, but my patience was wearing thin. I just wanted to fix this, to make it better, but it seemed that nothing was going right.
"Okay, let's go back now," she said suddenly, standing up and brushing the sand from her clothes.
