The flesh of the mutant had become soft like wax. So Bushwick's punch didn't smash the head open. Instead, his hand got stuck in the mutant's head while the heat of the fire within the mutant struck him face first.
His position wasn't favorable at all. Even though the mutant itself was useless and was only slamming him with its hands, he was in danger of losing his life because of the heat of the fire.
Bushwick's clothes caught fire and began to burn. Even his skin began to sizzle and smoke because of the heat.
