Catherine Ford was just about to say "don't get too close to me" when Grace Clarke's voice suddenly sounded from behind, startling her into a shiver, and she growled low, "Benjamin Jones, stay put!"
But after she finished shouting, the head on her shoulder grew even heavier. Hurrying to support it, her touch came across a patch of clamminess where the man's hand was. Looking over curiously, she realized that Benjamin Jones had his eyes closed and his face was a terribly pale white. Shocked, she no longer cared about Grace Clarke and urgently asked, "What's wrong with you? Benjamin Jones, what's wrong?"
"Pain."
With his eyes closed, Benjamin Jones strained to utter just that one word. Catherine heard it and felt a tug on her heart, "Where does it hurt? Hang in there; we're going to the hospital right now."
