"For a while," Kaiden answers. "He needed something from me and I needed him too."
"How'd it go?"
Kaiden is taken aback by the question. He doesn't expect a stranger to ask, but staring at Adam's clear eyes, he figures out that it's out of curiosity and nothing else. For a moment, he feels the urge to lie—to say it's fine, like how he always says to Lucy and his auntie. Words like 'I'm fine' and 'everything's okay' rolls so easily off his tongue that sometimes, /sometimes/ it feels like the truth. Instead, he looks at his belly without answering. He doesn't think it's big, not this far along, but the bump is obvious against his small frame, especially when he's sitting down. Nobody can deny his state when they look at him like this.
