The crunched paper was in her pocket like a heavy weight. There must have been a mistake. Right?
She jumped into the next cab that stood in front of the bank. ''To General Hospital, please. Fast if it's possible.''
The cab driver just nodded and he started driving like crazy trough side streets making her flabbergasted. She didn't know that her face lost color and her expression was anxious. How should she know that cab driver lost a few months ago someone dear and just remembered how anxious he was as well. If she goes to the hospital she probably is checking on someone. This child. He felt sorry for her.
Mikey just thought he was in a hurry to finish his job and get more costumers. The two people thought opposites so they accepted the situation.
Not long after the taxi stopped in front of the main gate and she just passed one of the bills sh grabbed from her chest pouch. She rushed inside while he just put the bill inside his pocket, not even looking at it. Even if she gave him the one-dollar bill, he would have probably just let it go.
She strode back into hospital and all the doctors and nurses went silent after seeing her back. One of the nurses rushed back as she saw her pale face. ''Honey, did something happened?''
''Sorry, I need to see old lady, I mean miss Olis. Is she still in her room? It is important.'' She was about to walk away when the nurse stopped her.
Mikey could see that something happened and her heart became faster. ''What, did something happened to her?''
The nurse pulled her slowly to the seats and make her sit down while the other one brought a glass of water. ''You do know miss Olis had a problem with health?''
Mikey knew she had some kind of problems with her heart, but what it was, she was not sure because no one wanted to tell her.
''She had problems with a heart for many years. She had two times heart transplants and many post procedures since then. But her immune system was fighting the new hearts and no matter what we tried it didn't work. Actually, it was a matter of time when she would die. We didn't expect that she would go back to her room and die. Everyone thought she fell asleep but when the nurse came to check on her, she was long dead and beyond saving. Sorry, honey.'' The nurse could see her completely shaken.
''Didn't she had family or anyone? What about her funeral?'' Mikey was shaken to the core.
''She already prepared everything. As soon we noticed the lawyer he came, picked her up and send her to cremate her. Her last wish is for her ashes to be sprinkled over the mountains behind us. She always wanted to go and camp there but never could.'' The nurse patted Mikeys shaking back and sighed. ''She was happy when you left. She told us that in the future you will be happy and safe.''
Is that the reason for that money? What else. ''Can I have a number of her lawyers? nee to talk to him.''
Nurse nodded. ''Sure. I will call him right away and you can ask him. Come.''
After waiting for a few moments the nurse could her older voice. ''Is this mister Hartmann? I am Amy Lion, the nurse in General Hospital. Miss Mikey Shiri is asking for miss Olis's matter. Can you talk to her?''
''Yes, of course, I had to talk to her anyway.'' Lawyer Hartmann sighed.
''Hello, mister Hartmann, could you tell me what is going on... with everything.'' She made a small pause to make him understand what she is talking about.
''My office is not far away from there. Across the street and on the right side of the Juan Pharmacy. You will see my name on the door.'' His voice sounded tired and heavy.
''I understand. I will be right there.'' Mikey stopped talking and hugged the nurse. ''Thank you so much, all of you. In name of miss Olis as well.''
''She was a good person. You be good and stay safe and healthy. Understood?'' Nurse Lion was worried about this young woman.
''Don't worry. I will be fine. I need to rush. I actually should have started to work in the orphanage but something happened there. But by the chance, I got a job at the tv station. Its work so I have to prepare for it. I need to say my last goodbye to miss Olis and need to rush. Sorry if I can't stay longer.'' Mikey felt under time pressure as she saw on a big wall lock almost noon.
She will need to sleep as well. But before that she needs stuff. Many things.
She rushed out again and crossed the street. The Juan Pharmacy was huge, so finding his office was easy o find. As she entered the secretary just smiled at her. ''You must be Mikey Shiri. You can go in. He is waiting for you.''
The first thing Mikey saw was a big office overfilled with tables filled with all kinds of files. In mid of mess stood a middle-aged man with spectacles. He smiled at her and pointed at chai in front of his table. ''Miss Shiri, please sit down.''
Mikey felt suddenly nervous. He seemed kind but why does she feel like he is having trouble talking to her.
He could see her nervousness and smile. ''I am going to a new office in two days. So here is a mess. I hope you do not mind.''
She shook her head with a big smile. ''Not at all, congratulations, mister Hoffmann.''
''Thank you. Let's cut the case. I have a case in ten minutes so I will explain it to you in short words. Did you get the money?'' He knew that she should have but he wanted to make it certain.
''Yes. What is this about?'' She felt hat something was not right.
''There are many complicated laws in our country. She chose to sell all she oned and just send you the money, then to make you go through all the inheritance process. We already paid taxes so do not worry about that. There is something she asked me to give you. She said only you can read it.'' He passed her envelope and smiled. ''I have done all I could in her name. I will finish the case and then rush to the helicopter. I want to spread her ashes over the mountain.''
Mikey jumped looking at him eagerly. ''Can't I come with you?''
He chuckled and shook his head. ''She knew you would be like this so her choice was not to let you do it. Do not worry, I knew her for years and I will take care of her ashes carefully. Ok?''
Mikey just nodded and as he stood up and shook her hand, she turned and left.
The envelope felt warm just like her heart. She just walked slowly and in passing passed the sports store. She remembered. She needs to buy gear. Now she can afford the most expensive one.
